View Full Version : Transfer case difference

I installed a 271 Ford case on my 02, and I cannot see a feasible way to connect the front driveshaft, as the location of the front output of the transfer case is low and causes the front driveshaft to contact the transmission crossmember.

I am wondering if location of the 6 transfer case to transmission mounting holes is the same. Is the front case half of the 271 Dodge different than the 271 Ford?

I wonder if the transfer cases are clocked a little different. I know the 47re clocks the transfer case a little different than on the 5600. At least I know it did on mine.

That is what I am wondering. I also had no issue with frame clearance that I have heard about in other swaps. I will post some pictures later.

Im pretty sure the ford case does clock a bit different. The one on my ford barely clears with the 5600

I'm not going to shim it 1-1.5".

Might have to look into something like this^ I've considered going this route myself.

Ever get this figured out man? If you're making a bigger 1410 front driveshaft you can put an end yoke on the t-case and use the slip part of the driveshaft at the transfer case and you should have enough room!

Also very interested in this... Any pics?

could also just fabricate a new square tube crossmember

I thought about that, but I am concerned with the length of the splines that would be in contact...not a heck of a lot.

Unfortunately that is not an option. I will upload pics here soon which will shed some light on it - basically the driveshaft will sit on the crossmember.

Working on it.

That's the new plan.

General shot from back. Please ignore the filthy AD.

Shot of the frame clearance. Looks to be lower than the Dodge cases.

Hard to see from this picture, but the driveshaft will contact the curved part of the crossmember. Tape measure is stretched across the bottom of the frame.

The way Dodge should have done it:

I tried to get my local driveshaft shop to do that. They didn't want to. Oh well.

And yeah that TC is clocked WAAAAAY lower. This is what it looked like in my 02 with the 5600

I guess manuals are a harder on clearance. Isn't modifying things so fun? :hehe: What size rear driveshaft?

I've had that driveshaft to 95 MPH without issue. The guy I used didn't have a problem with it...just took me a really long time to get it.

Thanks for the photo for reference.

I think its 4" tube...had to go to 1480s because I couldn't find the 1410 yoke for the rear of the transfer case.

Its all water under the bridge I guess...I really hate the design of that trans crossmember anyhow.

Same as mine in my 99 with my 4500. Looks to me that the op has a ford tc. maybe thats why its clocked different.

I bought my 271 from Transfer Case Express to replace the 241DLD. They built it with a Ford fixed flange for the rear driveshaft. When I installed the 271, the case was close the the left frame, where the frame has a piece cut out. I cut another 1" of the frame out and cleared fine. They used a Dodge core when building mine, which makes me think the cases are clocked different between the Ford and Dodge.

Feel like making one for me while your at it? I would like to take the shims out from under mine but I'm too lazy to make my own. :hehe:

Have you though about trying to find a Dodge front Case Half? I cracked the case on mine and bought both halves for $300. Then you would have the advantage of the TC being tucked up into the frame more . You might run into some slight clearance issues with the frame and body but nothing a couple minutes with a grinder or big hammer couldn't fix. My 5600 and 271 didn't have any clearance problems with the cross member. It was close but it wasn't interfering. Might be worth a shot.
