I can search for these ( Google) and I am not sure if the 20 buck packages are worth it. Rare uses, but want it to function. Any ideas?

For very few occasions a cheap one will do as long as its taken care of. Would find a cheaper known brand instead of some china knock off. I believe most of the snapon, mac, and matco are all made by the same company. I'd have to look in the am to see if there is another name on it.

Chines bases work fine, good instruments are necessary though..
Got mine off ebay (base) and indicator at local bolt shop

We bought one from JEG's. Seems to be OK.

The $25 setup I bought at harbor freight works great. The magnet in the base is way stronger than any other cheapy that I have been around, just as strong as the name brands that I have. The dial indicator seems to work pretty good too.
I have an old atlas 6" lathe and needed a cheap dial indicator to put in the drawer by it.
