Ok, time for the stupid questions.
What is this?

What are these small bolts holding down? (I know the head but why small bolts?)

What is this? Oil pressure relief? It is bolted on the front cover.

Thanks Drew.

Do you have any idea what the things are in the first port? I'm not 100% sure.

Warning Wild Guess Boots on- The first picture, that might be the oil pump? Don't shoot me.

The oil pump is crank driven and inside of the engine cover down at the bottom. It looks like a crank case pressure relieve but it is in the wrong place and that doesn't explain the box looking item it is plugged into. It is just odd. I was originally thinking it was a vacuum pump to help with crank case pressure but there isn't anything driving the box.

The third picture looks to me like an oil pressure relief valves but again, I'm not sure.

What year is it? It may pay to buy a GM Factory Service Manual to help out on the build.

Yeah, we have one coming. I'm just trying to get as much info now that I can. Jim is handling the clean up of everything and sending the parts out. So, it will probably be a month or so before I see the engine again and I don't know if I will remember my questions then.

Thanks for the link. The engine is an 02 or 03. I think 02.

It looks like my 02.

1 The little bolts are just to that edge of the gasket tight I guess. I thought them weird but it works.

2 That is some form of acummulator? It only has one in. Maybe on heavier trucks they mount the air pump there for the brakes and that is the oil return

3 I beleive your correct. That is the releif.

part of the vacuum pump on CA emmissions trucks? Thats wierd; never seen it before...

the small bolts arent really head bolts; they are just to seal (oil) the head better at the top above the lifters...the true head bolts are the big black ones. Dontch'ya love how theres 6 per cylinder vs. 4 per cylinder on a powerstroke? :D

Just kiddin :)

Yeah, but it doesn't help when 3 of the bottom 4 bolts on each side were only hand tight now does it? :hehe:

I will still take my Power Stroke over a Duramax any day. That being said, I know what we are building will have more horsepower than any current Power Stoke  O-well.
