Some of the details are- '96 Cummins 12 valve, Dana 80 from '97 ram 3500, Nv4500 5-spd, Ford Dana 60 converted to factory style dual wheel, '96 241DHD transfer case. I am about ready to set the engine, after rebuilding it. That is about it for now, hopefully I can get more pictures as I make progress.-Nicholas

I made it a little further on the F350. I installed the engine a couple weekends ago, and bolted up the new south bend clutch and transmission tonight. Got a few more pics, ignore the nasty looking thermostat housing and valve covers, they were just put on so I could set the motor. -Nicholas

Ok, you all probably saw the other thread I had about the crummy motor mounts I bought from FC, and clearance problems i had with them. So here is my solution. I made custom mounts for the frame of the truck to accept a stock style motor mount from a '94-97 12v on the drivers side, and a stock style '98.5 to '02 24v passenger side mount on the passenger side. It gives me plenty of clearance around the oil pan, and about 3/4" between the valve cover and firewall. Now I can finally start moving along on the rest of the installation:rockwoot:._Nicholas

just wondering--why are you mounting your big turbo so far forward?

NCOVEY
09-24-2008, 09:22 PM
I haven't done too much as of lately, I haven't been feeling too well. My asthma has been kicking my butt, and now the Dr. thinks I may have an infection in the muscle around my lungs.

I have the hot pipe made for the compounds, and my wastegate actuator showed up yesterday. Now I just have to fab a mount for it, and I should be able to permanently mount the turbos, and hook up the oil lines.

The main reason I am mounting the primary so far forward, is space. When I made my engine mounts, I made the engine set as low and far back as I could in the bay. By doing this I can't fit the 5" exhaust between the bell housing and the frame. By mounting it farther forward, I don't have to mess with the heater box, and I can run the 5" pipe a little easier. I will get some pictures when I make a little more progress, and I will try to take some pictures to help me explain a little better. -Nicholas

absolutley awesome work! you're going the same way im going with the twins, (And i plan on using the International exhaust minifold as well)but your ahead of me. only mine will probably be a little more away from the engine due to the GM alternator being in the way. One question, did you try to mount your hx35 on your manifold yet since you flipped your exhaust manifold? unless you have a 45* adapter the turbo housing will interfer with the injection lines.. please explain what you did or gonna do, in order to give you the proper clearance from the injectors,lines,etc.. I ask this due to having worked with a twin setup with the international manifold.

The HX35 will set backwards, so that the exhaust side will face forward, feeding the S400.

Hey guys, I have been feeling alot better, so I was able to get some more done. I finished the wastegate, merge collector/ hot pipe, and installed the secondary. I also finished the downpipe, and wrapped it, and had the oil feed lines made and installed them. The new DDP 4's and 3K gov spings were installed, and now I am working on the oil return tubes, and trying to figure out the wiring. I have also started mocking up the cold pipe. You can't see it, but I also stripped the front loom apart and relocated the starter relay and wiring over to the drivers side.

VERY nice work sir! love to see that 12'er coming along.

just curious, with all that work why did you choose to go with a 3kGSK over a 4? i have been reading the 4gsk fuels harder down low which would be beneficial for your twins.

also, are those just polished stock valve covers? if so how did you go about it?

-Marcus

NCOVEY
10-09-2008, 05:36 PM
Thanks, guys. I used the 3k for now, simply because they were laying here. I took them out of my '96 Dodge to put in the 4k's. I will see how it does, and replace them later if it doesn't do what I want them to.
The valve covers are the stock ones. I just used 80 grit down to something like 800 grit on a hand held orbital sander, then used the buffing wheel to cut the rest and buffed them out with some rouge. I need to work on them some more, but I figure I will worry about that when I detail out the engine compartment after I get it on the road. I will have to remove them anyways to do my re-torques and lash adjustments. -Nicholas

Thanks, Adam. The cold pipe is going to look a little odd, I just hope with all of these tubes and heat shields on and around the engine, no one mistakes it for a 6.4 powerstroke. The real estate under the hood is starting to get a little cramped.

Ok guys, I have a small report. The 2 new boost gauges, and pyro showed up. Painted the pillar pod, modified the sway bar links in the rear, installed the a/c lines coming off the condenser. Final installed the intercooler, header panel, and headlights. Fitted the filler panel between the grill and bumper. Fitted the bumper, and marked where the new support will go between the stands for the shackle reverse kit. Tig welded and painted the pass. side intercooler pipe. Wired up the neutral safety switch and back up light switch(Auto to Manual conversion), routed and loomed all the loose wires. Test fitted the air filter and intake tube, and installed one rear shock.

Not quite yet. I got all the gauges hooked up, and drivers side I/C pipe made and installed. Cleaned up and loomed the wiring under the hood, and got it running and moving under its own power. Installed the new longer shocks, and flipped the left rear shock mount around to match up with the Ford mounting point. I had to tear the drivers side of the engine back down to replace the side cover gasket. The gasket was brand new, but it looked like it dry rotted, and was leaking like a sieve. Got it fixed, installed the bed(doesn't match, I'll paint it later), and started mocking up the exhaust. I am still waiting on a tailpipe to finish the exhaust mounting. Still have to get some decent tires on it, and install the drop pitman arm for the reverse shackle kit. It is getting closer though. I am getting very antsy to get it on the road!

Hey all, got a little bit done, not much to brag about. Got the bed mounted, installed the 5" exhaust, and trying out the sleeper cab to see if I want to paint it and keep it. I am hoping to paint the bed this spring, after a little more cash is saved up, and the salt is off of the road. I also installed the new receiver hitch. I just have to redo the wiring, it is a little dry rotted. I got to drive it a little bit, but ran into a fuel problem. So I tore the whole fuel system apart, only to find out that a mud dobber had decided to take up residence in the fuel pick-up in the tank. Oops. So, I re-assembled the fuel system and changed the fuel filter, but haven't had the chance to drive it again. The dropped pitman arm showed up today, so hopefully I can find some time to get it installed and take it for another spin.

It does pretty good, I haven't had time to any real tuning on it, but you can hear that s400 sing. For some reason my south bend won't hold. I am going to do some more break in miles, over what they recommend, if it doesn't work better I am going to have to give Peter a call. I am still working on the rear suspension. It sagged lower than the front, so I changed out the rear springs and blocks, now it is too tall. So I am shopping for some shorter Super Duty blocks.

I did a little tuning and a little towing, and the egts got a little toasty. So I pulled some fuel from it, and seemed to have a little more power and better temps, so time to hook the trailer again. I also updated the tire and wheel area, by adding the 19.5's. Still a long ways to go, but it is getting there.

Total rebuild, overbored one step over stock, o-rings, studs, DDP4's, 3k gsk, #100 fuel plate, Hx35 over S400, 40MM internal wastegate, 18* timing. I am trying for 450-500 towing.

Very nice truck the 19.5's finished the deal.
Thanks, I had the same wheels in 16", but they looked too small to me. So I upgraded. The tires are actually in line with the price of a good 16" tire.

Ok guys and gals, we're back on track for a moment. i didn't realize how much glare there was until I loaded the pictures, but I reworked the interior. First I gutted everything but the dash.

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee254/c4entllc/DSC02257.jpg
Then I finished Dyna-matting everything. Floor, roof, cab wall, and doors. Then I went over the roof and back cab wall with 1/2" dense foam sheeting.

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee254/c4entllc/DSC02261.jpg

I took the carpet and seats to the carwash, and washed all the grime out of them. I also replaced the rear seat with a 40/20/40 seat to match the front. I also replaced any worn panels to make the look new again.

I recovered the headliner, and added an overhead console while I was there. The console is from an '01 GMC Jimmy. I also installed a factory auto dimming mirror, and replaced the factory slider with flat glass, and installed a factory am/fm/cd with amplifier. I also replaced the crash pad with one that wasn't cracked.

I replaced the sun visors, but have since come across these, so I will be adding them when I get a chance.

It is up and running. I have more to do to it, but it usable. I made the mistake of taking it out of the shop before I finished everything I wanted to on it, so now it doesn't sit still long enough to do anything. It is kind of like trying to remove the bottom from a sand hill. You move a little bit here and there, and more just funnels in on the spot you just cleaned out. :bang

Future plans are a bigger secondary, replace the front fenders, change out the rear axle for one with disc brakes, and I haven't ruled out the possibility of air ride. If I could get rid of my '72 crew cab and parts trucks, it would help speed things up.

I did not use the Dodge axle up front. My truck was a factory 4x4, so it came with the dana 60 already. The only changes I made there, was the reverse shackle kit, and the dually hubs.

I built the headliner up to match the console, and recovered the edges of the console to match materials. They needed recovering anyways.

Thank you, and yes I used the P7100. The flanges can be obtained from any turbo supplier worth their salts.

Stock style, new from Cummins.

Nick
05-18-2010, 06:23 PM
That surprises me, cause I have a brand new stock pump from Cummins on my 1994 12valve. I replaced the pre-filter and the post filter, but my lift pump still seems to have a hard time keeping up. The best I can tell, my p7100 is turned all the way up: I have the plate slid all the way forward and the AFC star wheel turned tight. Do you have any advice?

Check your fuel pressure. Your spring in your overflow valve may be weak.

Nick

I meant to put that on the list of things that I did at the same time as new lift pump and filters, I install a new overflow valve. I might need to drop my tank and verify the pickup is clean.

The only thing I found was a little bit of trash in the fuel pickup's coarse filters. I should just invest in a fuel pressure gauge setup.

When you get a chance, would you mind posting pictures of your oil feed and return lines for both of your turbos?

Nick, I can't get the camera under the turbos to take the pictures of the return lines. They just come out blurry and distorted. What I did was form a line that started from the oil return flange on the S400, bend it to clear everything, and terminate it in the extra bung I welded into the pan. From the hx35, I did the same thing, but terminated it into the factory oil return. For feeds, I had braided steel lines made to go from the oil supply passages on top of the oil cooler, to the supply side of each turbo.

Great looking truck! Thanks for your effort. You gave me most of the information I was looking for though.

I was concerned about the return lines because I didn't figure the factory oil return tube could handle a second source of oil without restricting the flow, so this is why you added the second port.

Thanks! Yes I added the second port for that reason. I too had thought about one port, but the guys on here strongly recommended a second port. The only problem with mine is that I should have added the port closer to where the pan levels off as it goes toward the front of the engine. Where it is now, it is really close to the exhaust downpipe.

Thanks! I made up some base plates that matched the second gen base plates. I then welded them to the doors one spot weld at a time, to keep heat down, and keep as much paint in tact as possible. I then welded a spacer in between the inner and out skins to stiffen up the door. It was kind of an experiment to see how they looked and function. They seem to work great on this truck, and will go back and do some body and paint work at a later date to clean up the installation.

Thanks! There is a support bracket that bolts on underneath that isn't really visible in the pictures. It bolts to the bottom of the S400 mount, and then bolts to the a/c / waterneck combination.

I measured the distance between the rear axle yoke and the carrier bearing, and the carrier bearing to the output of T-Case, then modified the Dodge driveshaft to fit.
