Easier to finish inside and insulate, Cheaper, and I like the looks over the all steel. The roof and sides will be steel.

I never felt the need for a big fancy house. I only eat and sleep in the house. I spend 8-14 hrs a day in my shop. Cant wait for it to be finished though.

Don't think I'm poking fun at ya, my original concept when I was just out of college was a 50' x 200' with a camper parked inside....

I am going to build a shop at some point this year (same as everyone, depends on the money flow)

My question is, what are the pros and cons of doing a pole shed as opposed to the stick built way?

Cheaper, and id have to say faster and stronger but I could be wrong.

I like the prefabbed steel ones myself. Everything comes pre-drilled, all hardware is included, and a set of dwgs. Just start throwing it up. $.02

I like your new wood one too. :D

One thing I can see is definately faster... what about insulation? We get a little cold here in the winter, so insulation is a must.. one thing that I can see that would be a huge advantage for me would be the quickness of getting it up

One downfall to metal is the purchase cost,, and then the pain in the but of insulation, among other things

Cost..true. Insulation....nah, ain't bad. No termites or water damage though. :D

bradley59dzl

I priced spray on insulation, roughly 12k. I'm just going to run 8' wide rolls of insulation with the heavy white backing like they use on the steel buildings. I will be putting steel on the inside walls and ceiling then i will blow in insulation in the ceiling. A steel building this size was double in cost and that is with a 1.12 or 2.12 pitch roof. Also it would screw me up with bay spacing unless I wanted to spend a lot mor money.. I like the looks of the 1' over hangs and I feel it will fit better beings close to my house.

bradley59dzl
10-03-2013, 03:56 PM
New building turn key(concrete, finished interior walls, Lights, electric, heated floor(already have outdoor wood stove for the BTU's), and a/c)without any equipment around 75k. Refinishing old building and lean-to of the back roughly 7,500. That is with me and buddies doing all the work with the exception of a neighbor which I gave him A 2000 Harley Duece to over see and help with this project. He is also going to do the addition and 28x38 garage off the house. So all in all I made out mighty well.

So is this a diesel performance shop or all kinds of cars? Any worries of people around your home all the time?

Do all kinds of work. Actually started out as a part time Off-road Motorsports after my full time job as shop supervisor at trucking company. Got fed up six years ago and quit. Started working on a little bit of everything but now mostly diesel repair and light performance work. As far as people being around all the time, including Sunday, yes! Some people are relentless! For the most part I really enjoy it. If that was what you were asking.

The reason I went this way was because it is attached to my old shop. It is a pole-building and was already on property when I purchased. Starting from scratch I would have done a block foundation for sure.

Would went a little longer and put more space between doors, Lean-to or separate Dyno area, or take out first bay closest to old shop make that for working area and made the rest with door on each side to have two lifts per one bay. Just to name a few, lol. My original plans was 50x100 but I just didn't have room. The left side of garage has a large rapid drop off. Plans were to make it same concrete height as old shop but just wasn't feasible as we already had to put over a foot of fill on that side of shop.

Do it as young as you can so its paid for and you can enjoy it. I am hoping to be done this winter/spring which puts this as a 3yr project but it has been pay as I go. So when its done I can fill it up and not have to worry about paying for it.

I like the radiant floor heating. If i ever get to build a shop that is the only type of heat I will use. Is there a spec on how close or far apart the piping has to be? It looks to me like there is no rhyme or reason to your piping. Not that I am knocking, just curious.

I would just think lay it one direction spaced every 12"-16" like studs would be sufficient? Maybe I'm wrong.

6" of the outside wall then 12" apart after that. Runs of 1/2" pex should not be longer then 300'. That is the reason for the runs the way they are. They make a program to figure out how to run it to have equal amount of feet in each run.

So how do you connect all of those loose ends? Have some sort of distribution header and a return header?

Thank you! Boiler system that will heat the new shop floor, the parts room floor, a hanging Reznor unit in the old shop and baseboard in office and entryway.

Thanks. I think it's bright enough. I was going to go LED but wasn't worth it when figuring price vs electric savings.

You can always replace the bulbs with LED replacements. They are much more cost effective than a led strip light

I've run those exact same numbers. Are those T8 high output or something? Can't remember my own research.

Also, we do a fair amount of painting and fluorescent has always been the light of choice for body shops. I just wonder if LED lights will give you that gleam needed for painting, color sanding, and buffing.

These are actually T5 High output only 5/8" in Dia. I have yet to be in a working shop with full LED's so Im not sure either.

Looks good! I wish I had my steel on my walls and ceiling. Hopefully in the next couple months.

I ended up with similar insulation except mine is 5" foam in 4'x4' sheets and I will not have any other fill.

I am doing all LEDs in mine. We will see how it looks. The nice thing about the LED high bay fixtures is that they are dimmable. I will be able to put plenty of light out there, and dim it down depending on the situation.

Thanks. All takes time. Quality Led pixtures were 3X the price of these T-5's. I can also turn on 2,4, or all 6 bulbs in each fixture.

All kidding aside, it’s a damn nice setup. Very clean and organized.
