Brand New Super B Special FAILURE

I purchased a brand new super b special on Friday. The turbo arrived at my house on Monday. After I got home from work I installed the turbo, being very careful of keeping it clean and made sure no debris went into the turbo in any way. I pre-lubed, as stated in the installation instructions, being sure to do as the manual said. For warranty reasons obviously. Once the installation was complete I started and let the truck idle for 1 minute, which is also stated in the instructions. After said amount of time I took the truck on a 15 minute test drive to get everything warm so I could leak check, once again. On the way back from this test drive I heard a squeal, like compressor wheel riding on the housing type of whine. I then pulled the truck into a parking lot and let it cool down. Shut the truck off and heard what I had dreaded to hear, and that was the turbo winding down against the housing. I removed the intake and proceeded to check shaft play. It is off the charts. The turbo is completely trashed and the exhaust housing is heat cracked all the way around. I know for a fact that the turbo was getting oil because I made sure to check that the feed line was in fact, "feeding." I found no leaks and no sign of anything that may have made its way through the compressor wheel.

That being said, I feel like in no way is this my fault. The turbo was getting oil and was not driven hard whatsoever. There is no way that a brand new turbo should just basically grenade the bearing after a 15 minute test drive.

If this does not get resolved I promise to make a call to you guys until I either A: Receive my money back for the turbo or B: Receive a brand new turbo. I am not going to turn a cheek to $1600. I bought this turbo because of how many people were happy with the way the performed and how impressed I was with the performance.

And once again, if this is not resolved in some way, I will never purchase another BD product ever again and I will turn away anyone that feels they want to purchase any of your products. I was very displeased with how I was treated on the phone. The guy acted like I was an idiot and basically told me that I was full of $hit. Anyone who knows anything about anything mechanical knows it is prone to failure at any given time for no apparent reason.

I understand your warranty disclaimer and realize that you are not responsible for such occurrences as oiling issues and or buyer installation failures. That being said, I am not new to installing turbos. I am a current employee at the Cummins Tech Center in Columbus, Indiana and have done my share of installs/diagnostics.

I hope we can resolve this issue in the best way possible. I will be shipping the turbo back to you guys tomorrow (6/19/2013).

Thanks,

Stefan Morgan

I hope this gets resolved. One thing I've never understood is how a turbo can claim an oil supply issue, if you removed a turbo that was working flawlessly.

I'm in it for the read as I'm sure I know the outcome of this regrettably.

I WILL have my money back and or a new charger. This isn't going to just go away, Rick. I can promise you that. You know me well enough, I'm not one to take chit from anyone nor will I take being screwed.

It's a box turbo that I swear bd screws with there has been a few people I talked to that have said the same thing, bloody thing blows up after a very short time and bd has horrible customer service

You called them this morning and what did they tell you? I am sure they will get back to you in the morning.
BD is by far one of the best turbo companies that we deal with and their customer service is always great.

I hope this gets resolved quickly. I've always been very pleased with BD's customer service and products. I've never had a problem getting something warrantied from them. I really hope they'll stand behind their warranty on this.

What did they have to say?

To answer all of your questions, I spoke with the guy from warranty claims this morning and he laughed at me when I told him the turbo was in fact getting oil and that it was an issue in their part. He said that they would not warranty anything that has to do with oiling because there was no proof that the charger was in fact getting oiled and was properly pre-lubed. He told me to ship it back for inspection and they would let me know what they found. That being said, say it was a faulty bearing to begin with, and as soon as it got hot, even with lubrication, it let loose. They would still blame that on me claiming improper installation/break in. Which is completely ridiculous. The damn thing got so hot the exhaust housing is cracked. I'm just completely lost right now and I just want to get this straightened out.
