View Full Version : Steel roofing for walls?
Anyone using corrugated metal/steel roofing sheets for wall sheathing inside their garage/shop area?
I have paper faced insulation between studs and hate drywall

I like white tin on the inside. Makes it brighter or at least seem brighter.

I know I few guys that have it on the inside. Either the price was cheaper than other materials or they do a lot of grinding or metal work and better with all the sparks.

It's the best way to finish a shop IMHO, never need to worry about mold or stains. A good pressure washer makes white steel look like new again.

This is the best photo of the inside of the shop I have, but it's all white steel on the side walls and celing.

I know a few people as well that have done the inside on white tin. Looks good when done right.

Our shop has white tin that was done many years ago and still looks decent, definitely makes it brighter . On the ceiling it has reflective insulation panels. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/20/y6yvute2.jpg

We have 15k square foot of buildings done with white steel interior, and my 2 car garage at home is done the same way. Nothing else even compares in my opinion.
Don't let anyone talk you into the perforated white steel that helps deaden sound, it's a bear to clean and gets dirty easy.

We have white in our shop. Hang the sheets with the ridges vertical. That way there isn't a ledge for dirt to sit on... $.02
Any issues or insulation related problems with air sealing with these ridges on these panels?
Just use self tapping sheet metal screws?

Most people use the classic rib style you posted. Surely you have a building supplies place close to you. Are you in northern Indiana? Ramco in Rochester has some decent prices. That is who built my shop.

I am in NW IN
I have Lowes, Home Depot, and Menards that I plan on checking out this weekend

I don't know how big your shop is, but keep in mind that all metal interior can cause noise echo. I have 16 ft sidewalls in my 60x75 ft shop. I went up 8 ft with 3/4" tongue and groove OSB. I have not finished the top half off yet, but going to use some perforated rib steel. The perforations will let some of the noise go thru the wall, rather than bounce off, causing the echo. Just my 2 cents.

Found a cheap retailer about 15 miles away for steel roofing sheets
$1.88 a linear foot

Ask them about liner panel. It does not have as much corrosion resistance as the exterior grade, and is cheaper.

1.88 is a smoking deal.
Thanks....I'm pretty pumped also
Local business with great price
Are you guys putting anything behind the corrugated metal panels......if not, just was wondering how much the 29 gauge metal will flex after being secured to 16" on center studs

I did my garage, it is 16" studs. It's okay but it's not as nice as putting nailers up and putting the steel on them.
The walls are almost all cleared off and nail free
One more small section of shelving left

Are you going to add any insulation?
Yes......paper faced R13
I figure 22-23 rolls at $9.19 a roll (32')

I would run nailers horizontally on that to screw the tin to. You shouldn't have a problem with air leaks with the over lap. Make sure to get your first sheet perfectly plumb it dictates the rest of them. Also remember to put your overlaps facing away from the way you usually look at the wall....make sense?
Nailers.....aka furring strips?

Ya 1x3's
I installed kraft paper faced R13 rolls..........about 23 rolls (32' each) did the job along with a few hundred staples
I needed 16 panels, which are 39" wide which I overlapped one rib for a tigh no seam look
I bought 10' long sheets and had the metal shop cut them to 102" (the height of the walls) so there were not any horizontal seams
I kept the 18" drop sections for another project
The self taping corrugated sheet metal screws went in great, no predrilling needed
I did not need and furring strips, with 16" OC studs, the 24gauge metal panels are more than strong enough, no flexing
The shop is MUCH more bright now just with finishing the walls off
This wall is about 45 feet long
