Wanted to do something new and challenging. Picked up this 72' 6030 back in august not running. First course of action was get it running of course.

Got it backed into shed and started investigating. I found the #1 cylinder had a busted liner, #6 ate something, and there was about an inch of rust scale. As luck would have it I found a 619 for sale for a decent price. And that was something I wanted to do in the future anyways.

Then I got joking with some buddies one night about how we put compounds on pickups all the time and no one has done compounds yet on a field tractor.

So I started thinking on it and decided I would give it a try. Went with a s464/83 .90 t6 and a s475/96 1.32 t6. Had the pump rebuilt and upgraded to 12mm plungers, new cam, adjustable fuel screw. Had local clutch shop make me a custom clutch, using heavy duty hubs and new plates running 9 buttons. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/401040813d1958063545a05fff869da2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/8fb131b7d097a620d34be4fb622b292c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/3adf5657b3d0bcb5610e51b562cf9312.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/f25dfe24ca0e4ea35c2c7d63dbcbe7a9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/264a001cda54ba9a944e081a14f054ad.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/2d1acce21979374532eb02383db39739.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/cd057aca27b90013aad2f28034072665.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/77552b549053dd05d70a60318d9b3253.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/0b31068a1aabf8866a516cd5de860553.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/08e19f969014b65448cc35892467d843.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/e808cde083ec1065cf7483a1c0d22a10.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/d22b55a0ce3890d25ff45586f4e60a74.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/bea5fd97cb2a215931ee3b13ae417792.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/797780599f3c0588bca7fa9467f2919b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/33f981195f6136ad6658327209fa0fd8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/78378aa97d04fff58cdb4be3d71c9107.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/046ffc92fc84732b66f83182fe13a826.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/78eb5359927133a5a7e7958d8a397329.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/cfe268ef35f97574e424a4a116c9e378.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/42a68d0d07c3e324046a693284587326.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/5ab98d32c1112bfd1f54e13c5308a05b.jpg

Goal is 250-300 field hp wot and 1000* egt
Then crank screw for the track and 5-600hp? Are you meaning nobody has added compounds specifically to their older field tractor? 'Cause Deere's tractors have had compounds for several years already....

Looking good so far!

Thank you for sharing. Looking very nice.

I have an '06 CX160 Case Excavator. The litte 4BT is underpowered for the Hydraulic pumps so I'd like to safely add 50 or so HP without melting it down in a high production situation. I could then maybe tweak the pump output just a bit to make this thing run almost as good as a Deere.

'C' - Can't
'A' - Afford
'S' - Something
'E' - Else

That's what I meant yes and Thanks! Been a long project and spring is sneaking around the corner and I have a lot of heavy tillage that needs done as soon as this thing is done!

Very cool project. I have always wanted to do this on an older JD tractor.

Why did you choose a 6030? Also, what kind of transmission is in that tractor?
No intercooler I imagine.

Because I've always wanted a big block and 6030's are just cool old school, 8 speed syncro, and yes it is intercooled.

Thinking this will be best place to put the gauge pod.

JDPlowboy
02-06-2017, 08:23 AM
Pyrometer, dual boost gauge one for low pressure turbo and one for MAP, exhaust backpressure and a vac gauge will be monitoring the Intake. Which at the moment I'm currently trying to figure out. Will need to have a big air cleaner for field work. And making it look good will either kill or make this project. So far I'm considering a big cleaner like off a w900.

Red Sleeper
02-06-2017, 08:34 AM
What about two separate intakes? One with a cleaner setup, and then just your conventional open element filter for pulling?

I'm imagining a "Y" split intake with a valve or gate to switch between the two. Similar to the new active air intakes on the Ram trucks.

I'm assuming you will run the gauge connections under the fender.....are you going to put sheet metal over the lines? I'd have them ripped off in a day. LOL

JDPlowboy
02-06-2017, 08:38 AM
Plan right now is to just remove air cleaner and run open Intake when at the track. I'm just waiting to put head and turbos back on the tractor then sit the hood on and see how much room I have to work with. I'm afraid I'm going to have to cut a hole in the side of the hood instead of being able to come out and under it like I want. This hood was original with no dents and I had it all painted already :-/. Looking at buying a 7520 hood and patching the 2 air cleaner and Intake holes I won't be using then just putting a 5" hole in the side to go straight into turbo then mounting air cleaner like this guy did https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170206/48e0df16802eb7bd70c98dd01f63d397.jpg

Ya going to mount a junction box of sorts under neath and Deere ran fender lights thru the fender brackets, I believe there is enough room still. Yes mud will be taken into consideration lol

I will be interested to see how this turns out. A local farmer around me had a 6030 in the day that had a 619 and was wicked up. I believe they had a lot of drivetrain problems, but I can't remember specifically.

This is a badass build though! Takes a lot of space to get al that chit under the hood.
I would just like to update the chargers on some of ours, let alone twins haha

I worked on a large farm and they had a 6030, hardly ever used it, kept it as a back up for the 4955's. They would triple it up and go if needed.

Triples have crossed my mind. As luck would have it we've got a set of clamp on 38's. Only thing that would hang me up is we're spread out over several fields and transport would be a pain.

mfsuper90
02-06-2017, 08:31 PM
Dual 20.8x38 is a lot of tire. Triples place a lot of load on the very edge of the axle, a lot of strain if for some reason all the load got put on the outer triple

Very cool. Twins seem like overkill for 250-300 horse though? Theres tractors making 250 with a little 3lm that work everyday. I think you will be surprised at the horsepower you have when you get it back together. With a 12mm pump and those chargers youll be making some good power.

Ya I'm shooting for 6-700hp for track power then pulling fuel out for field work and bring it down to 250-300hp. Thats the plan anyways.

I've been in that boat before, when I made an adapter to put a VE on my perkins it made the stock timing marks out of whack so when I re assembled it wouldn't start.

I took a bolt and put it into a spare injector and found true tdc when I put my cam in. It's amazing how far the marks can be off

Very cool....you're biggest problem will be tying that thing to the ground if you actually want to use 250hp on a 2wd tractor, but I'm sure you already knew that.

Some big rubber would do it, but you'll need more weight on the back then....once you get it nailed down, then come the rear end problems. 6030's are tough, but double factory power in a working application is ROUGH.

Either way, awesome project....I have my own envisioned someday when I find the right donor carcass, but it will be orange....

That's some very good ground speed for the application.

Very cool!

After a full day of running I was headed Back to to the shed and I lost all my hydraulics running down the road in 8th gear wide open.

As I suspected.. after sitting for 20 years the glue separated from the brake linings and when I started using them the linings separated, went metal to metal and plugged hydraulic pickup. What a great birthday present lol so I got to the shed and started in on it and lucky for me everything came apart awesome and had it down to the brakes in 3 hours

Make sure to flush the rear end good. All the ones I've seen do that have moisture in the oil that cause the brake pads to disenagrate.

Dang. Not too bad of a job overall. The screen did its job.

Dad had that happen to his old 4230 when he first bought it years ago. I remember thinking it was a huge job to change brakes on that tractor. Now it's just a Sunday afternoon chore.

Is the dyno today?

JDPlowboy

Made it to the dyno this morning.

The test yielded:

Run 1 stock setting- 266hp
Run 2 1 round in- 307hp
Run 3 3 rounds in- 316hp
Run 4 5 rounds in- 337hp
Run 5 6 rounds in - 320hp

Egt's never broke 1000*'s

Boost was 28psi (20 on main charger 8 on low psi charger

Back pressure was 1:1

Intake vacuum tickled gauge but never came off peg. Very surprised with that since my Intake I made to clear hood looks like it flows about like a brick wall.

Fuel pressure never came off of 40psi

Not even a puff of smoke on any of the runs.

I've got video posted on the 10-20 and 30-70 series John Deere pages on Facebook. Search for Yukon Cornelius.

Super happy with the results!

It never sounded to really load the engine hard he tried telling me that the engine wasn't spinning fast enough at the start of the tests and when it would start to load it would pull down past the end of test mark.

So maybe if I had a better throttle linkage adjustment I could've had a higher number but a guy can make all kinds of excuses lol.

Wasn't a very good weekend. Came to shop Saturday morning and found a pool of fuel under the tractor. Fuel tank sprung a leak. Just filled up the night before too. So I spent the morning draining tank and then repairing the pin hole. Then I finished up my exhaust stack.

Then couple friends stopped by and we were standing by shooting the breeze and all of a sudden the radiator starts pissing on the floor.

This radiator has just gotten a new core 6 months ago. Would've bought new but they aren't even available.

I'm happy it made it through last week while we were planting corn at least.

I love that intake duct. Function over fashion.

Wonder if the radiator would cross with a 50, 55, or 60 series Deere.

lol it was sooo hard not to cut a hole through the hood but it worked out ok. Looks like it flows like a brick wall but with a clean filter on it there is zero vacuum on the Intake so I guess it works good enough!

6030's are odd ducks everything on it is model specific. Makes it tough finding parts.. it could use a little more cooling capacity. I had to turn it down when I was disking in the field, couldn't keep it cool.

Did you change the core when you did the radiator? We usually go to the biggest number and size of tubes we can fit between the tanks when we rebuild one.

Made it thru last fall tillage and the 619 I used was shot, couldn’t keep oil in it from all the blowby. So I did an in frame over the winter. Thought I’d fire ring the sleeves while it was handy, I got a kit from a shop I won’t name they sent instructions on how to machine sleeves, had my machine shop follow their instructions, installed and when i torqued the head down it broke all 6 liners, by that time it was getting time for spring planting and was getting pressed for time, ended up just putting stock sleeves back in without fire rings, just shimmed the liners up to get more squeeze on the stock gasket. Ended up buying an 8400 so this thing just sits in the shed now.

Blew the headgasket at one of the pulls. 70#’s of boost on reliance headgasket didn’t work out.

If the sleeves were reliance i wouldn't necessarily point fingers at the fire ring instructions. Their material is scrap iron, and a low grade of it. I've seen their sleeves break on stone stock configurations with the proper stock head gasket.
