View Full Version : 39 dodge welding rig

After Some seriously bad timing on getting my 39 built I believe It’s finally time to get the ball rolling. Plans have changed pretty drastically since my other build thread. Using a 95 4x4 dodge frame chopped and boxed back half frame for a clean slate. Going with four corner air bags controlled by accuair. Four link setups coming from Darrel Reese (far from stock). Hoping those will be in next week so I can get going on the suspension. Getting my block freshly machined and a stock rebuild. Since I’m making it a work truck I will be stripping the paint fixing it up and going with a gray of some sort. I will be building the welding bed as well. Looking for a Lincoln classic 3D welder to sit on top. Since I’ll have plenty of onboard air I’ll be running to low profile Bostrom leather seats. I’ll try to keep the pictures coming in as much as possible.

Should be pretty cool when done. Just please done do the typical far from stock tire/wheel package I see all the time, looks like total garbage!

I’m going to need more practical wheels than that so no worries there lol
Yeah I really like what dodge did with the design on that grill.
Few more pics of the cab. Hopefully they are the right way this time
Building a new visor for it as well

Gonna try anything for sound deadening?

Jl12valve
01-26-2019, 02:33 PM
Yes, I will be lining the firewall with heat resistant sound deadining mat then putting dynamat(or similar products) throughout the entire cab. The cab has about an inch and a half gap between the outer sheet metal and the head liner and interior liner so I’ll have plenty of room to insulate. The doors will be tricky though.

Got busy on the frame today, knocked off all the useless brackets and ground it smooth. Managed to get the back half tied together and welded to the frame as well. Hopefully picking up my wheels tomorrow and should have a rolling chassis by the end of this weekend. Engine rebuild kit will be in this week which means I’ll finally get my motor back. Looking forward to the bodywork portion of things.

I was nervous when you mentioned finding wheels but the styling of those will look good. Modern without being over-the-top compared to the old truck's lines and such. Based on how the frame was sitting in comparison to the wheel & fender, the truck will actually sit higher than that picture shows? Truck will be 4wd? Dually?

If it is going to have a flat bed/welding bed it has to be DRW in my opinion.

Would like to go dialysis but I’m set on srw. Got the bed for it, it’s an 11’ knapheide box. Gotta barrow it up 16” to make it srw width. Will have pictures of it next to the body tomorrow

I'm pulling for you to change your mind and go with the duallie.......:hehe:

sootie
03-04-2019, 12:52 PM
you might have issues narrowing that box. Reason being, the cabinet depth on the srw bodies are shallower than the drw bodies. If you just take the width difference out of the floor, you may have suspension interference. (probably not an issue for you due to your fab skills and the fact you arent using conventional suspension).

The other thing that might help is when those bodies are made, they "hang" the side packs on the floor sub-assembly and then weld them in place. They arent solid welded iirc and you might be able to split the stitch welds and lift the cabinets off, mod the floor arrangement and hang them back on.

Jl12valve
03-05-2019, 11:20 AM
Lol maybe. Plans tend to change quickly.
Thank you for that info. I will have to notch the bottom corners of the front boxes to clear brackets but not much thankfully

Managed to do a little work to it. Bolted the motor and trans together and stabbed it in to get an idea of where my cab will sit. Turns out I’m going to have to build some motor mounts or flip them around as the engine is to far forward. Need it about 8” back I order to get my cab and fenders in the right locations to line up with the front axle. Also wouldn’t have room for a radiator either. Also I did not leave t on saw horses it is sitting on jack stands now

I think it is badda$$.

I would go dually as I think you are gonna look to wide in the rear, like to much space inside wheel to wheel.

I would also figure out a way to smooth the transition between skinny cab and super fat girl utility bed. Personally I would do stacks big rig style tucked up in the corner against the cab and bed...If that isn't your style you could make a nice filler panel to smooth the transition.

I definitely vote against dropping the utility bed....that is a unique and useful piece to put on a custom build

Just my $.02 as ideas. I think it is an awesome project anyway you go. :Cheer:

Agree with both of these statements.

Personally not a fan of the utility bed; it's too boxy compared the the truck, but if the transition was done right it would look badass.

I think a flatbed that's .U. or .V. shaped or somewhere between with black or patina'd stacks would look killer. JMO

12valve95, I just decided on putting dual 6” aussie stacks. Think it’ll help tie in the bright and shinny wheels having polished stacks on there as well. After looking at my actual service truck (17 Pete 337) I think with the stacks it helps the transition between rounded cab and square bed.

Jl12valve
05-03-2019, 12:51 PM
Also, it’s way to difficult to make this thing an actual service truck here in Cali so I’ve decided on using some of the compartments for things like my air system and a bada$$ sound system. It’ll be a unique play truck for sure

This thing is looking good..nice work! Have you considered building some steps to get into the cab? That would help smooth out the transition between the narrow cab and the utilitie bed. In line with the outside of the front fender. Industrial grating would look good, and let the mud fall through. I love these old body style trucks though, i just can't fit into them. Milled the wheels, wrapped them and slapped them on. One small step at a time

That looks great.
Too many old trucks today made to look like they are in bad condition. Yours has just the right flavor for me.

Yes. It's very well done.

Looks like it's been used and cared for, with an emphasis on used. But not abused or neglected.

Thanks guys! I just recently got it registered and just got the title in the mail. Also i’m pleased to say that it is going to a new home soon and I’ll be able to put some time into my work truck to make some real money. As much as I’ve loved building it I’m tired of sinking countless dollars into it. The work truck will be no slouch though. Will run as a 2nd gen for now but it’s the perfect donor for an old cab when I’m ready! Preferably a 39 dodge again.
