This proceedure MUST BE DONE WITH THE ENGINE OFF ! ! Do not attempt to do this job with the engine running.

Remove the inlet plastic elbow tube off the intake side of turbo assembly.

Look inside the inlet opening, you will see a round ring the is being retained by a large snap ring.

Remove the snap ring with pick or small screwdriver, use care when prying this snap ring out, try not to score or scratch up the inlet casing. Remove silencer ring.

Now take the time to check the 'play' of the shaft inside the turbo, I would advise this be done if the truck is either used or you are looking at a truck for purchase. Make sure the impellar is not touching the inside of the case.

If it is touching the case, then the shafts bearing is worn, and its time to either have the turbo reconditioned or replaced.

Removing the silencer ring allows a better intake flow into the turbo. And it also allows for a slightly responsive spool up. Tests have proven that this mod gives about 7-10 hp over keeping the ring in there.

And the real benifit is you will be able to hear your turbo sing!:woohoo:

Question on this. Does the )^ Cummins have this and is this a mod can do with a otherwise stock motor or should it be done with a air intake system?

Yes, this is a Cummins trick. I had mine in the glovebox the day after I bought my truck. You can do it to a bone stock truck. It just makes more turbo noise

Not sure if the turbos on them have one or not.

I don't think so but it only takes a second to pop the tube off and look.

does this work on the 6.7?

No it does not. I mean.... You can take the ring out of the 6.7 inlet, but it's different. It has a few of roll pins that hold it on. The easiest way to remove it is to remove the compressor housing from the charger and drill the pins out on a work bench.

I have heard about this about a hundred times and almost every person on the cummins forum with a 2nd gen has done this but it does not improve HP AT ALL but it sure does make your turbo sing

we've done it on all 4 of our trucks and theres no hp gain on it, from i can tell at least. but it will make your turbo louder

I tried a pick and also a small screwdriver...not to mention the split in the ring is at the top of the turbo inlet....any other tools that might ease this process?

It may be tricky at first but once you start pulling the ring out of the groove and you use your wedge to work the rest of the ring out.

Looked at it as if there was a groove that the ring sits into.....not so much....comes right out of there

Didn't really make much difference in sound to me...stock paper filter probably isn't helping either

use snap ring pliers. will decrease the chance of damaging it.

My snap ring didn't have any holes in it to allow me to use snap ring pliers. I'm not sure how all of them are, since I have only done my own, but on mine the small screw drive trick worked great.
