i thought it would be cool to see what kind of tractors everyone has and what you think is the greatest tractor of all time. i have a 1979 4240 with 11000hrs on it. it had the original seat in it up to 10000, and the best part is that it has never been apart or the enegine worked on. its used every year to work wheat ground along side our front wheel assist, and dig and thrash peanuts. in my oppion its the most efficinte tractor built.

That's a negative on the M&W's. They're custom setup's from the maestro, I believe 4430 manifold with 4630 charger on the 69(it's also a console/PS) and I'm not sure about the second but probably very similar.

Buck, I'm a little upset that you didn't mention the Moline, I am family and when you got me it came with. There's a couple 3020's runnin around too..

'68 4020 Row Crop Standard with 720 loader. It needs a little love. I want to move the 3pt over to the console like the late models and do a few other mods but for the most part it does everything I need it to. It pulls a MX-10 mower real nice. I also want to find the metal roof that mounts to the ROPS and a set of fender support blocks for less than an arm and a leg. And after last nights fight with the lights, I'm looking at a few new wires in the near future.

We had a 4455 4wd duals tractor in the shop back in January for some kinda of pre-breakage maintance. The owner wanted to put a bottom end in it before it went out on him in the field somewhere. Tractor had 11,989 hrs on it. One owner never had anything but regular maintance done to it. Took off #2 and 3 main caps and had antifreeze in them. Tractor was used for everything. Heavy tillage, turning, planting and probly some stuff it wasn't suppose to be used for. LOL But then on the other hand I sold a 4520 a couple of months ago that I had to rebuild the motor in at 6,736hrs on it. Well thats what was on the tach anyways I have no idea if that was correct or not.

66 IH 706d.....pump work and bigger injectors :rockwoot: Its all factory otherwise, in mint condition too. It's the best tractor on our ranch, better than the 01 5205 4x4 w/loader. drags a disc or pulls a 12ft brush hog.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r279/973604x4/sum081021.jpg

01 JD 5205 4x4 w/ 521 loader. always having problems. fuel lines grow holes once a month it seems, hydraulics always freezing up, etc, etc. notice the diesel puddle in the picture LOL

63 JD 2010. Don't remember the hours, but its been abused since day 1. always been on the same family farm. We've always had over heating problems.....JD claims it was typical of the 2010 and thats why they were discontinued after 2 years. (correct me if I was told wrong) Grandpa wanted to get rid of it a few years ago, but I said no....its a restore job just waiting for me. I'll get to it someday :hehe:

I ditched the cab and about 95% done with the restoration. the tractor got put on the back burnner for about 5 yr and not one single drop of oil on the floor. Kind of a rare tractor. JD made them from 69.5-71.5 till they got the 30 series up and running.

Grew up as a kid on a 4020 and still love that tractor but not N/A, that thing needed a turbo/intercooler. Traded it for a new Ford 7700 in 80' that was a work horse of a tractor for a 4 cylinder turbo and burn very little fuel but needed an intercooler also.

Why is it the 40/50 series JD's always pulled less and burned so much more fuel than any other, I could throw some rocks about this subject but some are listed in this thread.

My grandfather, father, uncle, and I farm about 2000 acres of corn, wheat, and soybeans outside of Wilmington, OH, too. It's an all green farm.
John Deere 8430 rowcrop, MFWD, StarFire RTK autosteer
John Deere 7930 rowcrop, MFWD, Starfire RTK autosteer
John Deere 6430 Premium, MFWD, loader
John Deere 1790 CCS, 24row planter

John Deere 9870 combine, autosteer system, 30 foot flex head, 8 row Geringoff corn head (Lost 5 bearings in machine and ventilated block in 12 separator hours, Deere buyback)
Caterpillar 590R Combine, 35 foot flex head, 12 row Geringoff chopping head
Several John Deere tillage tools
John Deere 4720 sprayer that gets leased to local co-op in return for free spraying, and chemicals at cost.
Unverferth double rolling basket
2 Kinze Commander 1000 bushel grain cart
John Deere 332 Skid steer, cab, heat, A/C, CAT CONTROLS!!. Not really sure why we have this, pretty much just a tax write off.
I'm sure I am forgetting things, but this is the main ground force. Dad and I do just about all of the field work. Grandfather and uncle take care of maintenance, and we all do the record keeping, etc.
There's also a shop with all the toys to work on stuff, living area, office, etc.
Any questions, fire away...
Everything is paid for, equipment, ground, buildings, everything. Sometimes, you just get lucky and have the market on your side. We have acumulated the above over about 3 years. Lots of fun when you've got nice, new toys.

I would have to say that 4320's were the best tractor Deere made... But I wouldn't quite call them "un-complicated". You have to split them or use special stands to do just about anything on them. Trust me, I keep the bills paid with 4020's (My dad and I own an Ag repair shop)

Though I will admit that those early Deere power shifts are pretty stout. Tricky to get together right, but stout. We've got a customer that got tired of his 404 and dropped a 5.9 out of a 93 dodge into his 4020 PS :evil

I wish I could get my hands on that tractor. but it's my uncle's and he's fine with how much power it has.:(

Even if you did get a hold of it, I would be carefull as to how much you add to it... The engines don't take to bolt ons (turbo's and the like) very well without some internal modifications. Unless you don't plan on taking them too far. Better off finding a 4320 :Cheer:

DO u have overhaeating problems with ur 4850? when i work mine it will get hot.

How clean is the radiator? Use a garden hose and spray backwards through it and give your cooling system a good flush (use an acidic flushing solvent and follow the directions). If that doesn't help then you may have a leaking HG... I've seen broken head bolts on 466 Deere's more than once as well (would cause a leaky HG).

I'm not tryin to be a smart@$$ but have you cleaned the radiator and oil cooler out? You wouldn't believe the amount of tractors come into the shop when I worked at deere that had not been cleaned out.

Did you forget a 0 or does your 7800 really only have 260hrs on it?

It really has 260hrs on it. Dad bought it brand new an used it for one season. The following year he replaced it with a 8870 an used it for everything. Ever since then its sat in the corner of the shop with a hood blanket on it. Twice a year we pull it out an take it down the road an back an change all the fluids in it. JD salesman came by last year an said its the lowest hour 7800 in the country an overseas.

4020 hands down best all around tractor of time. Wouldn't trade my jd4440 for anything either. think the old school jd 4000 would be a neat tractor to have sittin around too. $.02
