The best thing about running at this time of the year at Mission is if the weather holds out the air is incredible here. On a good day you can see upwards of 800ft BELOW sea level. Huge horsepower to be made.

Drake would love to see you make the haul up here. Awesome track, one of the best around. Plus there is always that good Canadian beer we have up here too........:Cheer:

Thanks Malcolm, are you coming to Bremerton on the 24th of April? I seriously thinking of bringing White Out up to that event if I can get the bugs worked out in time. For the Dyno Day we expect a pretty big turn out and it is a first come first served for the dyno with a limit of 60 vehicles. BE HERE EARLY.... Sign up You will sign up right here at BD for the Dyno Day. The NHRDA will be on site here on Saturday selling memberships if you wish to race on the Sunday.

Racing action starts again fairly early racers gates are at 7am. You will need to get there early to sign up and put your truck through a tech inspection. Then racing usually starts at about 9am.

You can get the track information at Mission Raceway (http://www.missionraceway.com)

Yes it is a Mustang . Lately we have been doing pretty well with strapping them down. The wheels were knurled last year so we have had 1000hp a couple of times now. But being a mustang there is always the chance that we cant get a real solid hook on it. We could have a pallet of converter covers to put in the back to help as it has a fair amount of weight there. If it is dry out we should be able to get it to hook. Wet, well.......... So make sure you do your sunshine dance on Friday night.:cheer:

Thanks Ken. We are still deciding what we are going to do but I agree with you the record should be in the 9's.
Only time will tell what we are running. :evil

Redneck6.0L
04-21-2010, 11:47 PM
the record can never be held in the 9's cause NHRA rules state that you need a fuel cell, batteries relocated at 9.99999, so if they diqualify guys for running under 11.5 for no roll bar, you'll be disqauilied if you run in the 9's in superstreet.

if you want to run nines let your nuts drop and go play in superstreet. any truck that is goin to run nines isn't a daily driver that can tow, kevins truck doesn't even have a bed in it, i thought superstreet was for daily driver trucks wanting to push the limits, a stripped truck with no interior should be moved into a class of what it is, a race truck

morkable
04-22-2010, 12:32 AM
I agree to a point shaun.. problem is,, at least my problem is, I cant afford to keep up with the big guys... sure,, for a little extra my truck could run easily 9's but,,, I cant afford to keep fixing it.. at least in superstreet I can dial it back, run some mid to high 10's and being light it shouldnt break things,, making it an affordable sport.. for me. I spent every penny I had this winter and about 15 grand of the banks money on my truck,, I cant keep up at that rate..

I guess my point is that I want to run, make laps and have fun,, and I dont think or feel that I can do that in pro street..

Michael

Nope, fuel cells and relocated batteries are not required for 9.99 or quicker, as far as I can tell. My low-9 second gasser has been running a stock Vega fuel tank (narrowed slightly and aftermarket sump added) for years. Here are the sections on Fuel Tanks:
FUEL SYSTEM
All fuel-tank filler necks located inside trunk must have filler neck
vented to outside of body. Vented caps prohibited. All batteries, fuel
lines, fuel pumps, or filler necks located inside trunk require
complete bulkhead of at least .024-inch steel or .032-inch aluminum
to isolate driver compartment from trunk. Fuel lines must be located
outside driver compartment. Fuel tanks must be within confines of
the body. See General Regulations 1:5.

1:5 FUEL SYSTEMS
Location: All fuel tanks, lines, pumps, valves, etc. must be outside
of the driver’s compartment and within the confines of the frame
and/or steel body. Cool cans, fuel-distribution blocks, etc. must be
located at least 6 inches forward of the flywheel/bellhousing area on
rear-wheel-drive (RWD) vehicles, and on opposite side of
flywheel/housing area on front-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicles. Fuel
pressure gauge isolators, with steel braided line, may be mounted
on firewall.

Tanks: When permitted by class regulations, fuel tanks located
outside body and/or frame must be enclosed in a steel tube frame
constructed of minimum 1 1/4-inch O.D. x .058 chromoly or .118
mild steel tubing. All fuel tanks must be isolated from the driver’s
compartment by a firewall, completely sealed to prevent any fuel
from entering the driver’s compartment. All fuel tanks must have a
pressure cap and be vented outside of body. A positive-locking
screw-on fuel tank cap is mandatory on all open-bodied cars.
Insulated fuel tanks prohibited. When used, fuel cells must have a
metal box protecting the part of the fuel cell that is outside of body
lines or trunk floor, excluding hose connection area in rear. Nonmetallic
fuel cells or tanks must be grounded to frame.

Here are the relevant battery rules:

BATTERIES
Batteries must be securely mounted, may not be located in driver
compartment. See General Regulations 8:1.

MASTER CUTOFF
Mandatory on any car with a battery running 9.99 (*6.39) or quicker,
any car exceeding 135 mph, or on any car where the battery is
relocated into the trunk area. See General Regulations 8:4.

8:1 BATTERIES
All batteries must be securely mounted; must be of sufficient
capacity to start vehicle at any time. Batteries may not be relocated
into the driver or passenger compartments. Rear firewall of .024-

You rule book must be very outdated Shawn cause my 2009 and 2010 rule book state the same things that Micheal posted. You want me to put a hitch in the orange truck I will, you want me to drive it to the track, I will. MY TRUCK IS STREET LEGAL, its passed safety inspection after the mods were done and it has full registration and insurance, that pretty much means a street vehicle. I have a couple of friends that run drag cars that run in the 9's and they still drive it on the street.

No problem, I just wanted to clarify. It's amazing how many track tech officials will claim stuff that's not in the rulebook as well.

Have you found the source of the low oil pressure issue from Texas?

Getting closer to this event! I'm trying to decide which (if any) mods to do to my truck before the event. I have a new billet torque converter ready to go in, and an intercooler as well, but all my "spare" time is being spent on my gasser race car trying to get it back together.

Any "show specials" at BD? I was thinking of buying something BD for my truck just to be eligible for contingencies! If I pick the right part, I can use it on rental trucks too ;)

Also National Record Holder in Pro Street , Malcom Cross will be trying to breaks his record of 150mph and the World Famous Dirty Max will shooting to hit the 8's

If any of you are going to attend the Friday night streel legal races just so you know there is a ZERO tolerance policy on alchohol. If you are caught drinking you will be asked to leave. If you are camping and not racing that is different, but if you are participating just be aware. And they do patrol the grounds looking for you.

I think you have to be racing to camp at the track, but not 100% sure on that one. They do prep the track on the Friday night. The only concern is temperature. If it isnt very warm the track usually gets pretty slippery by about 8pm. We run low 9s and this time of year we only run until about 8. It is the first real big race weekend of the year so they will definately be on the track prep.

What kind of car are you running low 9's in? Has traction been pretty decent there until it gets too cold? What hours do they run on Friday?

I'm hoping my Vega will dip into the 8's finally with the new (but still mild) combination. With last year's combo it ran mid-5.90's in 1/8 mile, and it hooked well at most tracks.

I am the crew chief on the quickest aircooled vw in Canada. It is a full chassis car that runs 9.30s at 150mph. It is a 2275cc turbo vw motor. Pretty cool setup. Track is usually very good for hook especially when you have some fast cars in the run order. This weekend will have the west coast doorslammer assoc there so it will be very sticky. Once the track temps get into the mid 50s then it gets slippery. You can still hook, but no sense risking putting it into the wall.

I dont know how many are or were considering going to TS for their race, but if you have seen the pictures of the racetrack you might want to consider heading this way. The track there is currently under about 4 feet of water so the drag race at TS has been called off. I know the amount of work they have put into this event and it is truely dissapointing to see things out of their hands take it away, but thats racing....

Well I have a tentative run order from the track director at Mission. They are going to start at 9am with Junior Dragsters, Sport Compact, Hot Rod, Sportsman, Pro, Super Pro, Motorcycles, Super Combo, then NHRDA (US) This should put us on the track for our first pass at about 10.20am. The more trucks we have here the more passes you will get to make.

You are going to get two qualifying passes and at least one elimination round pass. Being that it is a busy race day if you have not ever been down the drag strip make sure to ask someone what to expect. The crew at the NHRDA trailer or myself will be able to help you with what to expect. Please also note that all NHRA rules are applicable. So the faster your truck is make sure that you meet all the rules needed to run your truck or you will be turned away.

Still under the knife Shawn, its getting yet another tranny pull and pump redo, still something wrong with the damn TC solenoid in the tranny pump causing the TC to lock at idle, can't build boost with a **** that way. Also putting on a larger exhaust housing on the small turbo to help with the drive pressure, as well as putting in some smaller injectors, the 130 overs that are in there are too big and I can't clean up the smoke. Can't bring myself to sqeeze it, although I gave it some serious thought. Hope to have it in Sacramento next weekend.

I got the wise idea last night to try to reseal my passenger side intake plenum before leaving, how long can that take? ;) A few stuck bolts later it is mostly back together (waiting for the sealant to cure). I think I'll stick around here (maximizing cure time), head over to PIR for tonight's test & tune, then leave really early morning for the event. Flex plate was ok, it was the adaptor plate. For whatever reason the adaptor plate that was on it was 5/8 inch thicker where the starter mounted. So neither the 5.9 or the 6.7 starter would work. So I took the adaptor plate off of the old engine and got the boys to put it on for me.

On another note, we actually did get the truck to run today,, just not very well... I think that the crank sensor was toast. I went and bought another one, going to put it on tomorrow morning. Hope to have it running and over to bd by 8 30 am

I'm sitting in a Les Schwab in the South Seattle area with 2 damn "mystery flats". I always bleed my tires down at the races then air them back up before driving home. At Bremerton 2 weeks ago I did the usual, but both outside rear tires lost almost all pressure in the 3 hour drive home. I thought maybe the valve cores were bad, but they weren't leaking. I aired them up, and both tires held all their pressure for the past 2 weeks (but I didn't drive it much in that time). I drove it 15 miles to the track last night, and both tires had lost all their pressure in that short drive. Aired them up again, and they held pressure fine all night, checked just before I left this morning (and hit the valve stems with soapy water after checking pressure just to make sure they didn't start leaking right then). Started driving North, and at the first spot I stopped (3 hrs into the trip) one outside tire was completely flat, while the other one hadn't lost a bit. Aired up the flat one, and could not hear any leaks. Drove 5 miles to a Les Schwab, and that one is almost flat again! Looks like I'll be getting to BD about the time things wrap up.

Michael,
Do you think you might have a cracked rim? Nathan Black had rim issues a couple years ago.
Jim

Jim,
I hadn't thought about the rims, I remember Nathan's problem now that you mention it. However, I don't think it is the issue since both rims have held pressure despite hauling the camper.

Remaining info to my story - after waiting 2.5 hours in Les Schwab (which I understand can happen on a busy Saturday), the guy tells me that the tire has become delaminated inside - the "liner" has become detached, and they will not even put it back on a rim for me due to liability. He gives me a quote for all 6 new tires (for a paltry quote of $1379.41). I tell him to just put the spare on and I'll be on my way. He has trouble with the plastic hex on the retainer which holds the spare to the bracket (its metal threads are somewhat rusted to the bracket threads), so his manager comes out and mangles the thing with vice grips, but eventually gets it off. If I wanted it destroyed I could have taken a torch to it, but I didn't say anything. Have you ever heard of PB Blaster?

Then a little while later the manager comes to me and tells me that the spare is too old and cracked to put on, and the only way my truck is leaving their lot is if I buy a new set of tires from them. I tell him I will just put the spare on myself then. He tells me "I'm not going to let you do that, it's a liability issue if I allow you to do that". Now those of you who know me know that I'm a mellow, not-in-your-face sort of person. I did get in his face, and told him that I WAS going to bolt MY spare on MY truck and drive out of his parking lot, and he is welcome to try to stop me. I also reminded him that it IS a dually, and it drove in to his shop with an outside flat. He told me he would let his technician put it back on, but that "this never happened, there will be no reciept and no evidence". So after wasting almost 4 hours at the Les Schwab, I am on my way out with a delaminated tire strapped to my roof, a mangled spare tire holder zip-tied under my truck, and a wheel in my camper. I made a few calls and located a used tire place down the street, and $80 later I had a similar tread tire in good shape mounted to my original alloy wheel. By this point I was going to be hard-pressed to get to BD before the end of the day, so I tossed the tire/wheel into the camper and headed North. Throughout this time I also called the Firestone dealer that I bought the delaminated tire from (which is 26 months and 16000 miles old). I asked the question first what kind of warranty comes on that series of tire (30,000 miles). When I explained the situation, the guy tried to tell me that tire damage is only covered by the road hazard warranty which I declined. Of course there are lots of things that I can do to a tire to cause it to delaminate internally ;) Needless to say, he is getting a visit from me on Monday...

I made it to BD and had a great time chatting with the crowd that was still around. Chad from Alligator put his truck on the dyno, Michelle from Diesel Performance Specialties harrassed me about EV2 gauge wiring (which led to a wiring demonstration in the parking lot), and a bunch of us went out to dinner, where I learned that there is some top secret Duramax project that Shawn is working on, and he will not tell anything about it despite having drank 13 beers.

What's happened in SS??? Ron I'm glad you got that truck workin on the dyno....awesome.

Michael
05-10-2010, 10:43 AM
I know one thing that happened in SS (I think it was the final, but not sure) - Shawn's truck blew up rather spectacularly, including catching on fire on the race track. He had exploded a turbo, and the oil sprayed on the exhaust and caught fire.

In DirtyMax we were fighting two different problems with similar symptoms (fuse blown for the power portion of the auto-shift controller, and a shift fork out of place in the transmission). Either way, we were getting great wheels-up launches but unable to shift past 2nd, maxing out at around 102 mph. Brad came up with a temporary solution, which required me to do the most boring burnout I have ever done (1st gear only, max 2200 RPMs), but we were able to make a final pass of 9.21 @ 141 mph, with a 1.24 60' time despite tripping the 60' clocks with the back tires (it was carrying them well past 100').

If anyone is still interested in the saga of my tire hassles, I think I have finally found the root cause. The valve stems seem to leak through the valve cores when driven over rough roads (of which there are plenty along I-5 in Washington). The real reason I just started experiencing this is because someone stole the valve caps off the truck when I stopped at a store on the way to Bremerton. They were the metal type with a rubber seal, so they would have held air even without a valve core. I didn't think it was possible to lose air through the core that way, but I managed to find two metal caps in my toolbox, and experimented on the way home, trying one outside wheel capped first, then the other one. In each case, the uncapped one lost most of its air as soon as I hit rough roads, while the capped one did not loose a single psi. I drove the last 170 miles (including the roughest road yet) with both of them capped and did not lose any more air. The reason the inside ones did not lose air is because they have 4" extenders on them, so they are effectively capped. I suspect that the supposed delaminated tire is really fine (you can just see a tiny spot where the inner liner is loose). Going to have it remounted today and see if it holds air when I have the stem capped.

Regards,
Michael Pliska

Thanks Rob! That was actually one of my worst RTs but it was the best ET! And the 60' time appears to be tripped by the back tires (we hit 1.151 at Dallas when it didn't carry the wheelstand as far).
