Hello,

I'm in the process of building my truck this year into a street/strip truck. Running 580cc 12mm pump, with 5x22 dual feeds with pintle cut, s465 .9 ar, over a 80/127mm compressor, 4.4" turbine wheel air research charger, I am wondering how much I would loose by running without an intercooler. At this point I have to many other expenses to buy an aftermarket cooler, so I would be stuck with the stock cooler. Would I be better to just non intercool it and run 4" ppe across into the intake, or am I still better off intercooling with the stocker? Thanks.

Willy, I am not running a IC either. My theory is that at a certain point they are just added weight. On the street I think it would help, but after a certain speed I dont think that there is a huge difference. I will be able to let you know come may.

if you are not running water/meth or nitrous you will be loosing a rediculous amount of power.

intake temps will be 5-600+ deg at 80psi of boost

By the looks of his fueling and air, his egts shouldnt be too bad,, might want to squirt a little N2O in there though, especially to help them light a little

im not talking about egts, im talking iats. pump 600* air into the motor vs 100* you are taking a serious kick in the nuts.

Yeah I hear ya, and on the street that will be a problem, but imo if you are in the 10's or faster the IC is just mostly added weight... but I dont have hard data on that yet, will come may

I've been wondering the same thing, what about a smaller air/water IC?

at 40 psi out of an hx40 the difference between intercooled and not was 451/975 vs 388/793

I think to answer your question adequately, you need to know what your intake manifold temp is at WOT. If your chargers are set up exceptionally well then you may be OK to skip an IC. You might also find that you are running a lot of hot air and need to tweak, and/or add an IC to make up for inefficiencies that can't be dealt with in other ways.

A basic water/meth system may help quite a bit, and might prove to be cheaper and better than a high-end IC. They show up in classifieds pretty regularly at reasonable prices.

Ok thanks guys, I did forget to add that I may be getting a NX nitrous kit if the seller gets back with me, two solenoids one for spool and one large zex solenoid big enough for a 300hp shot, but I won't run that large.

I guess, paritally a something I need to ask to is where would the stock intercooler become a flow restriction to the point of being better off running direct piping? Am I there with the air I am going to have available or not? thanks.

anybody have any other thoughts?

IMO if you're going to street the truck, keep the cooler. I would rather have some restriction in the system than feeding the engine 400+ degree IAT's. A cooler denser charge is more of a benefit than the weight savings and hotter temps without the cooler.
How much weight is saved by ditching it and going with a pipe straight across? I bet you wouldn't lose enough to offset the loss in power. Just my $.02

You can get your intake temps down with nitrous, but you'll need to use a lot of it. Nitrous makes power, which makes heat, so it will keep your egts up until you go pretty lean.

just keep the cooler
