given that you take your extra lobe down that you dont need would a "street cam" be an upgrade for a common rail truck?

no.
the 24 valve is the best core out there because of the wide LSA 107.5 vs the 99 LSA of the 12 valve . The old non IC 12 valve cams had a 108 LSA but are hard to find. The CR has a lot better timming , but the tight 98 LSA makes it a passive EGR cam. The LSA need to be at least 110 to 114 to acheave what a diesel wants .

Greg is it true that the older non IC VE camshafts are weaker than the rest and are prone to breaking behind the cam gear? I've heard that this was the case a few times now.

I was told by a shop with a VERY good rep say that they get the same grind.
