View Full Version : Project X “the beetle” or our 09 Jetta for Pikes Peak

I’ve spent the week, getting a CM cage in Project X “the Beetle “and getting the pair of engines ready for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

I’m confident we will knock a huge amount of time off the record for diesel car, it’s a soft record. Well after talking to Charlie the tuner at Kerma, we are thinking about taking our 2009 Jetta . The car already has a cage, racing interior and proven suspension .Charlie has been doing so great tuning on the new common rail VW . That with the unreal DSG transmission, it’s going to be fun. Well with then entry fee at $2000, why not enter both

I'd personally focus on one car only, but if you have the resources and manpower to support 2 cars such that having 2 there will not effect your chance at success with either, then go for it.

we will be up there a whole week it looks like , so come on by .

we can get 225 + HP on the CR 09 car with just tuning. and around 300 + with Project X .
I got another set of billet pistons for the second short block, and its higher compression.

a pair of turbos????????????? didnt know you were going to run twins? yes , and done right , turbo's should not blow up .

I also have a big single , to try , we getting it all together.

Kerma is now the exclusive distrubitor for Colt's TDI cam, so I'll be running a Colt cam on this go round, I have been talking with Geoff , and I have a few of my own cams , that I will cycle thru the beetle , but this trip is not going to require a lot of power to set the record . The record is extremely soft , so all we have to do is make it up the hill to beat the Jetta of a few years back, and lean on it just a little to take the record that the Red Bull teams did that same year. this is about finishing the race.

The adjustable cam gear is now finished for a TDI , and will be avalable to the public

COMP461

glade to see you still know that , after he gave you a 3 year crash course in how to say the words and phrases and appear to know something about cams .

Well we are putting the engine together, and the newest member of our team, Melissa has been getting her hands dirty, after a long day at Hooters

Hooters always makes me sad.... If you wanna see T&A go to a strip club. If you want crappy food go to Applebees. Combining the two, well, its just sad and unfulfilling in so many ways. The few times I've been to Hooters left my belly and my soul aching.

Also, certainly in TEXAS of all places there are better restaurants to get wings and bbq, right?

Well the roll cage is in it , but in the end , I was not comfortable with the safety aspect , with so little time to get it all together. So I pulled the plug on Pikes Peak Hill Climb this year. So we are going to shoot for next year. We are readying the car for the next events, Hot Rod Drag Week 2010, Bonneville, and the Texas mile.
Here is the roll cage that Charlie finished this morning, He is reassembling the interior.

Hot Rod Drag Week 2010 Registration Link

You've been thinking about it; now sign up. HOT ROD is back in 2010 with the sixth running of the greatest street-car drag race ever: Drag Week(tm), the event that requires competitors to drive 1,000-plus miles in five days while racing at four different dragstrips along the way. The winners are the cars in each class that set the lowest average e.t. over the five races, and the overall quickest car is named HOT ROD's Fastest Street Car in America.

Larry Larson has nabbed that title two years in a row with 7-second average times, and now he's aiming for 6s-though some other guys are gunning for him. Don't let that extreme performance scare you off, though, as Drag Week(tm) has classes for anyone who cares enough to join the family of participants. And as any past competitor knows, family is not too strong a word to describe the bonds that are formed at Drag Week(tm).

The '10 event will take place September 13-18, starting and ending at National Trail Raceway and visiting O'Reilly Raceway Park in Clermont, Indiana (the historic site of the NHRA Nationals); Milan Dragway in Milan, Michigan; and Pittsburgh Raceway Park in New Alexandria, Pennsylvania.

There are few rule changes for 2010. In past years racers were allowed to depart each racetrack anytime they wished; now racers will be required to leave the track in mass at 1 p.m. each day (we've also shortened the track hours a little). This will give further proof that these are real street cars, as it hampers competitors who drive at unrealistically slow speeds on the highway. It also makes for better policing of competitors, ensuring that they are sticking to the required route, and it steps up the fun as more cars will travel in a caravan. Let the sniveling begin!

Also, rental cars are not allowed, . Here are the official rules. We hope you'll join us for Drag Week(tm) VI! It's the most fun you can have on four wheels. Make sure to sign up by September 9.

Yeah!!!

She is cute, no doubt about that but she wants to race and be a part of this team , much like Anna "Crewgirl" , she gets the same chance as everyone else that wants to be involved. She is 100 lbs, and that’s a big plus. A loss of 100 lbs over me.

I have made sure that everyone leaves the girl part of it out, she is just another crew member. She will have to earn her spot on the team just like everyone else has in the past. Just like Anna did many years ago. She has some big shoes to fill if she wants to follow Anna's lead. Anna is absolutely the best crew member I have ever raced with, and a lot of other comp racers will attest to that

The little Beetle is a bear to drive , but she is going to get her chance

This all started at Hooters a month ago. Charlie Stewart, Chris Franks and I were eating; she was not even our waitress. We all had race shirts on. This girl keep coming buy, and asking us about racing.

When we got ready to leave, she come over and almost with a tear in her eye, told us that all she had ever wanted to do what race, or be around racing.
She told us that she hadn’t a father or any brothers,, and just wanted to know why she couldn’t find anyone to let her help. And learn.

Well she was wiping down parts, and helping that night. This is how it works

In racing, and in life, you must give back!!!!!!

I was allowed, and tolerated on my first race team. I made many mistakes, and learned from them. The best possible way to learn to race, sled pull, or anything in life for that matter, is to pay your dues.
Get on a team, shut up, and open your eyes , and ears.

You must be willing to do whatever the team needs, not just the fun jobs, but sometimes the not so fun jobs.

I remember a race many many years ago, I was a new hire on the fire department , and only had one day of vacation saved up, to go to a race.
We popped a motor on the dyno, and the weekend looked like a bust. The only way out was to borrow a motor, problem was it was 900 miles away.

This was on Tuesday night; the first round of competition eliminator qualifying was on Thursday at 3 pm. I used my only day of vacation to drive all day, and night to pick up the little V6 engine, and was not able to go to the entire event. The team set a record in D/EA on the second pass with that engine. We then runner up that event, that event was pivotal in teams future, and mine.

With a large number of people, that always say that they want to be part of a team, there is an enormous amount of work to getting any project to the track. Lots of late night thrashes, and lots of not so fun jobs to do. Over the years most of the people that want to help, don’t usually last long.

One of the most successfully crew members ever on my team has been Anna “crew girl”. Anna understood why we go to the track. It’s not to drink, party, and everything besides race a car.
Melissa has shown the same qualities, she even gets dirty, something that Anna never had a problem with.
I give everyone the same opportunity, including the chance to learn to drive if they stay with it long enough. It’s a long road between helping, and driving, but it has happened
