Catalytic convertor case material

What is the case made of on a catalytic convertor on a gasser, specifically a 2012 Subaru? Stainless perhaps?

Wondering if I can weld this back up. I don't want to replace this entire header crossover cat combo.

You can see how little of the case is holding this together.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...024008f423.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4228a29491.jpg

I’d assume it’s stainless.

I would too. But before I go buy some SS TIG rod, I would like to know for sure.

Even if it's not stainless, welding it with a 308L should work.

I've done a lot with catalysts professionally. I could all but guarantee it is a 300 series stainless. From an OEM side, we typically use 309L for the filler rod.

If it has a stainless substrate, then the mantle is definitely stainless.
If it has a ceramic substrate, then the mantle is extremely likely to be stainless.

How many miles on it? Cat’s are typically 8 years 80,000 miles covered under warranty....

SHughes 03-20-2018 07:45 PM

130,000 plus miles.

It aint purdy but it should hold...no parts stores had the gaskets. Supposed to get here tomorrow.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...66704ed141.jpg
