Looking for cooling system information.
I'm helping a buddy of mine design a cooling system for a common rail swap and it's been a nightmare finding diesel specific information. We have about 22"w x 30"t and 8" thick without tanks and it's going to be built for towing, 450-500hp and nv5600. Does anybody have any idea how much surface area it'll need to not be a problem? Any other ideas would be great, thanks.

I'd find the volume of the stock setup and come close to matching it.
If he's deleted and a manual, then he won't have the egr cooler, or the trans heat exchanger that account for a lot of heat to the system. Also, I'm assuming if he's towing ~20k and going through mountains, he's got a charger setup to keep him cool, and not a drag racing setup. And there's some efficiency to be had by using an all aluminum radiator like a Griffin or Mishimoto (I personally am really impressed with Mishimoto. Quality and warranty). Oh, and surface area is more important that thickness, but it's a small factor compared to overall volume. |
Turbos will be be a 351 over a 475/96 and its getting a colt big stick so air shouldn't be an issue. It'll still have the stock fan on it too so we should get plenty of air flow over the fins. I'm probably just being paranoid, I spent too many years fighting with cooling issues in my toys so I over think it to death now.

What is this going in? It makes me think 1930's or 40's

I mean, forget about cooling. If you're towing with that, you better start worrying about a semi style air chair to sit on and some noise canceling headphones! ;-)

Sweet ride! At that point you put the biggest radiator that fits, with really good ducting. Put louvers on the hood, don't run hood sides if required. Might look into water injection, some believe it will pull heat out of the (hard to tell on my system)

Yeah, it might get a water air intercooler too, we're figuring the cooler the incoming air is the easier it'll be to deal with it. It's on a stock 05 chassis so it shouldn't ride too bad, it's getting a ton of dynamat too.

On a side note, has anybody tried controlling electric fans using the stock electric fan clutch wiring?

So nah?

Nope. I don't think anyone has researched the fan speed sensor end of it.

Hmm. I'll have to look at the file in hp tuners, I know there's fan speed settings and ect settings, maybe I can zero the speed table and operate it off the ect table.

That's the page in hp, looks like I could monkey with the rpm sets until it comes on based on ect only. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk |
