4020 mods?

are there any mods or ways to get performance out of a '64 or '65 JD 4020? Like putting a large turbo on? fuel pump tuning?

or is by doing that something you have to design and custom make?

We have one with a dealer-installed M&W turbo kit and the pump was built by a local fella. All that was done when the tractor was new though, I doubt you could even buy the kit anymore. It's pretty hot for a tractor that still works every day, teh 4020 luvs teh boost!!!!1111

Check ebay for the turbo kit. They are on there more than you would think. They usually go for over $1K though. It really wouldn't be that hard to build a kit especially if you could just get the manifold from the M&W kit.

Conversely, if you can find a 4320 manifold and turbo, that should bolt right up :)

Wouldn't a manifold and turbo from a 7700 combine work also?

Keep us posted! I have a '68 model 4020. A turbo would be great to have on it while puttin' around the yard with my mower!

No 100% sure on the pump...........but on most JD's on the back end of the injection pump theres a small square cover at the bottom. You can clip off the safety/taper wires and get access to the full load fuel screw (or whatever it's called). Every 1/4 clockwise turn is 25hp @ full throttle.

ndurbin - That will work for inline pumps, but 4020s run a rotary pump that is a little bit of a different animal.

As indicated before a manifold from a 4320 will work (also same as 30 series manifolds too). In past experience, the combine manifolds put the turbo in a different location that what tractors have, so not sure if that will work or not. The thing you have to watch on the early models, which the 65-66 are considered is the location of the valves for the hydraulics, basically are the levers beside the seat or do you reach for them on the dash. If only a single SCV (only 1 lever on dash), the manifold will fit fine, if a dual scv (2 levers on dash) it is gonna be tight, if it will fit at all. M&W manifold is the easiest choice in that case. If levers are beside the seat, then is a cake walk. Last manifod we bought of that type was in the $200 range.

Once you get your manifold ironed out, (espically if you can use a Deere one) you can play with turbos from a 30 series to 50 series tractors, all have the same exhaust housing mounting pattern. Our 67 runs an M&W kit with about 15K hours on it now. Our 69 runs a 4430 manifold and a 4630 turbo. Intake pipe is not hard at all.

I might be able to scratch up and M&W manifold if you have interest.

Ah ok.............wasn't sure what pump they had.

got a 4320, but wont be able to steal the manifold.

Where is the M&W available at? I checked Ebay, had no luck.

4320 is the same as a 4020 just has a turbo.

We've got a 68 or 69 with a Turbo on it and we've got a 66 with out one and there is a big difference. It's the M&W kit. My Grandpa had it put on when he bought it. It's got 8400 +- hours on it too. Runs good. i don't know where to get one but you might look in some Farm magazines, Farmworld might have something in the classifieds. I'm using the Turboed 4020 on my Sweetcorn picker and it works pretty good. I also use it for my Sweetcorn planter, JD 7000 6-30" with a unverferth Harrow on the front. Put the planter down and the Harrow down all the way and it makes it talk in 5th!

Our turboed 4020

Heres a pic of our 4020 with the M&W kit on it.

Our neighbor has a 4020 with a turbo.he said he took the exhaust and intake manifold off of a 4430 which he said bolted right up because both engines are 404's
