Towing compounds on a near stock 95

4 Attachment(s)
So recently i decided to build a small set of compounds that might work with a near stock truck. With little to no supporting mods. I wanted them to be a direct fit. Test subject is a very well used 95 with 257,000 on the clock. Had to do a ton of work to it to get it safely back on the road. Rebuilt the tranny. Billet single disc and some misc basic performance stuff.

Injection pump is a 160
Stock fuel system with fuel heater delete
2095 rack plug
.024 delivery valves
Stock fuel plate
3k govoner springs
Stock injectors

Turbos are
Early first gen H1c
52/60/18cm non gated
Over a
66/74/.91 non gates s300

These package extremely well. The goal with non gated was to make this kit for dummies to tune. Fuel plate only. I admit if you over fuel this be prepared for some heller boost. Initial tests with a 100 plate pegged a 60psi gauge. Was most likely in the 70+ range. The truck when purchased would make 32psi on the stock hx35. No tune change netted lotso boost and the stock fuel plate had to go in.

Stock Fuel plate in the full forward position gets one 58psi
At both pressure ratios being perfect. 2.22 @18psi on each turbo

Plate middle is 42psi
Plate full back is 28psi

As you can see with just one adjustment you can tune the hell out of this thing.
The truck pulls very strong. Plan on pulling the green truck to thunder in muncie next weekend and running both on the dyno.

what kind of drive pressure?

turbo2387 06-12-2017 07:35 AM

No clue yet. However because i plan on running this asatowing kit and notinrace truck mode it wont be much.

turbo2387 06-17-2017 09:37 PM

Stingy dyno on stock injectors and fuel plate gave out 317hp and 720tq. Numbersare probably a touch higher in real life but regardless the spread is very nice. Pulled a 20ft trailer and another 95 to the event. 1100* max on the egts. Quite the daily set up.

I love small turbos! They come in quick from what I could tell I loved my 369 came in early, with out touching afc live or any fuel tuning it stays cooler than my single but Smokey ( haven't tuned the low end fuel)

turbo2387 06-18-2017 08:24 PM

Its a blast to drive and tows very well. Its all whistle when you hit the go pedal.

blackcloudCTD95 06-18-2017 08:35 PM

Mines insane, boost monster I'm going to break something in the trans lol mine whistles real good

blackcloudCTD95 06-19-2017 09:55 PM

How does it do towing

turbo2387 06-20-2017 05:19 AM

At about 18k
Egts range from 900-1100
Cruising boost is about 10
Happy speed is about 62 with 3.54 gears
You can tell your towing but its so much better thab stock or a small single

Thanks for posting this up. I need to do something like this on my 1st gen. It gets warm when towing 10 round bales.

What/who's hot pipe? Did you add the spacer just to help with the bend radius on the cold pipe?

turbo2387 06-20-2017 10:07 AM

used a hot pipe that was designed for a twin turbo BB gas setup. 2.5 to 3 v-band adapter and 2 inch t4 adapter. all for clearance issues. its tight but fits very well. the LP charge pipe looks hideous as my cutting method was crude and I was out of time. buy a $20 180* bend and cut and weld it at 8 3/4 total width.

s366 cost $650
non intercooled H1C cost about 300 after rebuild
pipes clamps and ect cost about 350
I owned a down pipe I modified
machine work for the s366 exhaust flange $50
total $$$ was approximately $1400

this thing will make stupid boost. a wastegate on the secondary would allow one to make gobs more power however fitment was my concern with this. using an hx35 would have resulted in a much more intricate and imo ugly interstage charge pipe. I chose the early h1c with the 18cm housing and hose style outlet vrs the IC h1c with the 22cm and more common clamp on flange. not only because of fitment but for compressor size. I wanted a decent gab in compressors. this thing spools so fast I would have NO concern using the 22cm housing. it might allow for a bit more hp. On a first get you could much easier do a manifold swap and make the compounds look like I had them on the stand. once I started installing them on a second gen it was clear that the secondary in the stock location would be much easier to place the primary away from the AC and get a down pipe on it. about 7 inches needs to be cut from an aftermarket down pipe to fit perfectly.

On a first gen you could set it up to look like this pretty easy. Which is quite pleasing to the eyes.

Here's how we did a set on a 1st gen...S300G over an S478 (billet 6 blade wheel, 83mm turbine in a 1.10 T6 housing)...spools STUPID fast for the amount of air it moves.

1st gens are EASY to package twins into...

Hey Chris, where are they seeing 10psi and 20psi of boost at? I thought those marine air/water intercoolers were a lot taller than that! If I would've known they sat so low, I might have gone that route. Injector lines are a pain in the butt though. :/

Are you a vendor?

turbo2387 06-20-2017 12:10 PM

nope. just a guy that occasionally gets bored and builds stuff.

That came off an RT145 AGCO tractor, sits in very low to the top of the engine...it's probably more restriction than help at those boost levels that truck sees.

I really can't tell you much about the boost numbers, as the truck didn't have a tach you could see easily. It would easily stage 18psi to launch with a stock TC and transmission (truck is very light)...even if we opened the wastegate and hung it wide open it would spool hard about 70' out. I think that truck has 6x.016's and the pump maxed out and would puff a small puff of smoke at launch and was clean the rest of the pass.

I'm not sure how I would ever find another charger like that...Chris@Engineered Diesel built it for my tow truck years ago, and it got used for this project. It sounds MEAN when it comes on boost with that 6 blade wheel.

Great pictures and info. My 12v is an innercooled engine so the exhaust housing is 22cm. I need to find a primary to couple with this stock turbo. Only thing I have on hand is a GT4294 that was damn near free.
You are running stock injectors? Purposely for drivability?

Chris, that's a healthy setup. I feel like a VE pump would need some working over to move enough fuel for that setup. Maybe I'm wrong?

turbo2387 06-21-2017 08:04 AM

running stock injectors for 2 reasons.
1- these are very small compounds. you can easily over fuel them
2- I wanted to do testing on something extremely close to stock to show the difference a proper set of turbos can gain you.

this runs a box stock s366/74/.91 only machine work is to the outlet of the turbine
these turbos weren't put together to make a billion hp. they were for loads of TQ at a reasonable price.

Yes, it could use more fuel and a locking converter. I think the converter alone would put the little truck down in the 11's....but the owner hasn't had any time to get it out for about 5 years.
