How to adjust bands in 48RE?

Can someone tell me how to adjust the bands in my 48RE?

Thanks, Bodie

On the driver's side of the tranny, just above the fluid outlet to cooler line, is the adjuster for the 2nd gear band. Loosen the 3/4" locknut, tighten the 5/16" adjuster nut till it's good and snug, then loosen it 1.75 to 2 turns and retighten the 3/4" lock nut.

To adjust the low/reverse band, you need to remove the transmission pan. Typically, this band doesn't need adjustment. If reverse isn't engaging correctly, or if the truck acts weird when the gear selector is in L position, it might need adjustment.

Is there a tq spec for it?

crackerman 11-18-2011 10:14 AM

"good n snug"

zstroken 11-18-2011 10:15 AM

Actually on the 48RE isn't it a torx instead of the hex on the front band? The torque spec is 72 in lbs.

Cool, thanks guys!

My good and snug usually breaks chit. Lol

impmouse 11-18-2011 11:12 AM

#40 torx

Red Sleeper 11-18-2011 11:39 AM

You won't break those.. Don't get too comfortable under there, you'll be done before you realize.

I'm also going to try the tractor hyd fluid... See how it goes.

Admittedly, I've never been under a 48re transmission. I adjusted the 2nd gear band on my Junker Drag Truck (47rh) last night, that's why I knew the nut sizes off-hand.

Got it done, it sure does run a lot better. Finally fixed my shuttle shift issue.

torqueman 11-19-2011 08:17 AM

What do u mean shuttle shift? Mine seems to hunt for gears on light throttle I wander if adjusting would help mine too.

SPEEDSHIFT 11-19-2011 03:21 PM

Yes, it's goes back and forth between 1-2.

wwm 11-19-2011 10:27 PM

hey bodie how does that tractor hyd fluid work out.

i am having a differnt issue i have have the 1-2-1-2 but then replaced the pressure solenoid, and that fixed it but now about 35-40k i have a problem where the truck does want to shift into either 2 from 1 or 3 from 2. and sometime while in a roll it will just slip and not want to engage? all the other gears work just fine. any body know what i should do?

Adjust the front band and do a fluid/filter change.

tryblue 11-20-2011 03:28 PM

kickdown or throttle pressure is important also

wwm 11-20-2011 09:46 PM

Wow I did the band adjustment and what I difference I have no slipping but on occasion have the 1-2-1-2. So I will change the fluid and filter this week and maybe go with a bw pressure seloniod . After hearing some people doing the bw pressure thing it something doesn't want to shift right, should I do it or not.

What's the kickdown thing?

Glad the band adjustment helped. Since you're going to be in there to replace the solenoid, it'd be a good idea to replace the pressure sensor at the same time.

I have a 05 mine seems confused at low rpms and speeds shifting between 1 and 2 sometimes. Will adjusting the bands help this ?
