4wd drag race setup

I have a 2000 extended cab short bed truck that I am going to start racing. it is currently leveled but other than that is stock. I am wanting to set it up so that it will launch and run the best possible while still being able to be street driven. I have searched but can't find much info, are there any suspension and chassis gurus on here that can help?

How fast do you want to go? How much money are you willing to spend? How much of the work can you do yourself?

Caltrack bars, good shocks, and a willingness to learn tuning is MUCH more than most will ever invest.

This truck is more than a hobbie. Diesel trucks be it drag racing sled pulling or building a tow pig is my passion. I want to learn everything I can but it seems to be hard to get info from most people. I don't make a ton of money but I am good at saving up for stuff. I have a vp truck but am wanting to push It as far as I can while building a common rail to throw in it. A buddy of mine who is an extremely talented tig welder and I have been looking into building a ladder bar setup for it but again have been running into issues with finding much good info about how to lay everything out so it will work the best it can.

O and I'm wanting to break 11's for now but again see how far I can go without having to do much more engine wise. Truck is around 700 horse as it sits now

Stock suspension 4x4 with slightly aired down stockish all terrain tires will run 11's no problem. If you spend the money and dedicate time to tune the suspension, you might be able to transform your 11.90 @ 115mph truck into an 11.50 @ 115mph truck. Basically, the same HP to the ground will net a better elapsed time with a good hard hooking suspension setup.

Few spend the time working on the suspension because it's easier and sometimes cheaper to add another 100 HP rather than spend hours and hours tuning the suspension and spending the $$$ for suspension upgrades. When you start running in the mid 10's, then you'll have to learn suspension tuning on a 4x4 or you'll end up with tons of broken transmission and drivetrain parts.

I am going to be running 305/45R22 kuhmo ecsta. From everyone I've spoken with they hook the best of all the street tires. And getting the suspension and truck itself dialed in is what I want to do. Getting much more power out of the vp is going to be expensive and I really don't want to keep sinking money into something I plan on ditching. So my plan is to get the truck dialed in perfect so when it gets a new heart it will be ready to go

A big heavy rim is not what I'd suggest using. I like caltracs better than long traction bars. Your setup now should easily run 11s.

Ya I went with the 22 over 20's because I wanted that little extra height that you can get with the 305/45R22 over a 305/50R20. In the next year or so I will be getting a set of slicks but they are all so short and with a vp and 4.10 gears I'm worried about running out of top end

So what are some ways I can help with my suspension. While I'm not against spending money where I need to I'd like to do as much as I can with as little money as possible now while I save up for some of the bigger ticket items

Yeah I was goin go say with 305/50/r20 420s's and 3.54's I'm runnin out of top end around 120ish mph. But also my truck still defuels at 3100-3200 like normal

Remove all but 2 leafs from the rear. Helps a ton IMO

From what I found you want the rear to be level, if not lower then the front to help with weight transfer on the nose heavy trucks.

With full leaf packs in the rear I had a lot of problems spinning. With 2 leafs, and the truck lowered more I had very little issue spinning, even with a setup with more power/torque.

No matter the benefit I will never have a cali lean lol. My truck doesn't pull quite as well after 3200 but it will still rev to 3500

My plan was to pull the overloads and I'd love to take the flat spring off the bottom but that's not possible because it has the hole for the alignment dowel right? Do you have any pics mathews?

Jury is still out on the short bars.

And those are the factory leafs? How much did that lower it? Also up front do I want stiff or soft suspension. For lowering I'm either going to cut a 1/2 a coil out or I'm going to run coils from a 1/2 ton truck

Forget 1500 coils, too soft. I have cut around 1.5 coils out of the front. Rear is 2 leafs and 2" blocks. Not sure how much lower it is now but it sits level.

Are the 2" blocks from a 2wd? And what did you do to take the bottom flat leaf out?

Blocks are just some I had laying around. 2" tall, 3" wide to match the springs. Took the flat spring out and replaced the center bolts with shorter ones.

single leaf with a simple traction bar, coil overs, and nitto 420's. iv only ran the truck down the track 7 times this year but, i cut a 1.58 60ft leaving light.

Hdhorton 10-15-2016 10:12 AM

If you haven't got blocks yet the factory ones from a f250 are 2" and fit perfect, that's what I'm running. With aired down 420's, no overloads, and caltracs I still can't leave on more than 15psi on the track or it'll spin. I'm cuttin around 1.90-1.95 60' times leaving that easy. I'm in need of new shocks though so I think that's a lot of my problem
