12 valve guru needed

I need some help. I have a 95 project truck that I am restoring. I rebuilt the engine and it got mahle pistons, Hamilton cam 178/208, head studs, and DAP 5X.011 injectors. The entire block and head were gone through. I had the pump bench checked locally but don't know much about it other than I know it was rebuilt before I got it. I set the timing around 17 degrees. Pump has a new OFV from torkteknology and has around 20 psi at idle.

Truck starts and runs good but has a shake at idle. The shake seems to get worse once the truck is warmed up. I have double checked the valve lash and have also loosened each injector line while running and the engine changes once each of the lines is cracked.

Anyone have any ideas? Do Hamilton 178/208 cams make the idle rough? Can it be something with the pump? New engine has about 30 miles on it.

TIA

If you can post a video it might help. Is it a bad shake like shakes the whole truck?

Is it sucking air anywhere pre lift pump?

I'll try to post a video. What host should I use?

It doesn't necessarily shake the whole truck really bad but the mirrors and gearshift move back and forth quite a bit and you can feel it while sitting in the truck.

What rpm does it idle at? Should be 800rpms or so

jasonc 10-24-2017 05:45 PM

Does it feel like an out of balance shake or vibration? How does it run and drive otherwise? Did you just put a new clutch in also?

It could be I guess. it doesn't have any issues starting after sitting a couple days like its losing prime. I put new rubber fuel lines on the supply and return from pump to disconnects on the frame rail. I got rid of the fuel heater.

Its idling above the 750 rpm tick mark.

You might could describe it like that. Its weird that it gets worse once its warmed up.

Yes it got a new valair HD single disk with new flywheel.

What does it feel like at say 3000rpm going thru the gears?

I haven't had it to 3k yet but it feels good going through the gears up to 2500. In neutral idling you can feel the shake get faster with rpm up until 2000.

Any smoke or anything to go with the shake or just the shake alone?

It's hard to say and about guessing going off a description, but I'd take a look at the clutch and flywheel, and the balancer also. Does it have a nice clean haze free idle after warm?

No smoke. Nice clean idle.

Idk... it’s hard to say without seeing it first hand but I’d be looking into the clutch/flywheel area, or fuel system.
Are you sure a quality shop bench tested the pump and it tested good?

A shop out of ft worth called metro fuel bench checked the pump. They said it was good. They do a lot of pumps and seem to know what they are doing but who knows.

Could the pump cause a condition like this?

BRE 10-24-2017 07:08 PM

Well like I said, it’s hard to say what you have going on with out seeing it but I know when my pimp started to head south (plunger and barrel issues) it gets worse with heat and had a pretty good lope.

I've seen a 215 just need a barrel turned to smooth out a engine. Sent the pump to Seth and that's all he said it needed, long time ago.
Take temp readings on each cylinder.

Personally, I wouldn’t go without balancing the rotating assembly on a full rebuild. I had my crank, flywheel, and connecting rods balanced. Does it continue to shake as the RPMs climb? How old is the balancer?

Yes. As rpm’s climb the shake gets faster up until 2k then you really can’t feel it anymore.

Balancer is most likely the original one. Could it be bad? It looks fine from the outside.

turbo2387 10-25-2017 06:52 AM

it wont be bad enough to make it shake like your stating
