8.3l CAPS Pump

I'm looking at a school bus with an 8.3 that has the CAPS pump. Will the pump from a tractor (I think) run it on the bus?

PES6P

If not what would be the best solution to make it trouble free and what cost would it be. (approximately)

An 8.3 ? Must be a hell of a school bus. I've seen a few videos on putting a P7100 in place of the CAPS pump. I believe there was a thread on that here years back. Maybe someone can dig that one up for you.

What's wrong with the CAPS pump? Until something happens to it, I'd run it. They aren't nearly as bad as everyone says as long as you don't let Cummins overcharge you to work on it.

I found a thread or two but the guy that seemed to know what was needed was talking about tractors so I'm not sure its applicable.

Also, it was rather vague as they started talking details in e-mail or on the phone.

It's not a bad fuel system. Filtration is the key to longevity.

That was probably me...

We've figured out how to work on them without letting Cummins just replace the pump for $5800 plus labor.

Now, is it cheap when something goes wrong, not exactly, but you'll spend way more trying to make a P-pump fit than you'll spend to keep it running, IMHO.

I service probably 200 of them in Combines...only difference between them and a truck engine is the ECM.

I even have a Steinbauer chip for a QSC/ISC that I stole if you're looking for more power. Might have a 340hp ECM running around here too.

Man, that would be awesome.

Here's my situation, I found this school bus at a good price, has the 8.3 and Alison md3060, and suppose to be rust free, 190K on the odo. (no hours available)

I would have to fly out west and drive it home, 2000 miles :aiwebs_029:

I will have a day to drive it around before I pay for it and leave to come home. I plan on:

frequent checks of the oil
smelling for fuel in the oil
monitoring the coolant temps
close eye on the trans fluid and temp (I'll take my infrared thermometer)
how the trans shifts
vibrations and or noises
keep checking the hubs for heat
the diff for heat
brake air pressure
power steering fluid
pre and post drive inspections for leaks
oil and filter change
air and fuel filter changes prior to leaving for home.

What else?

I'd say that's a pretty good list.

That is also a hell of a drivetrain for a school bus.

Which would be better, 8.3 with md3060 and CAPS or 8.3l mechanical with mt643?

Can the MT643 be swapped to md3060 with a stand alone controller?

Signature600 06-28-2018 11:09 AM

I have an MD3060 laying here off an 8.3L CAPS engine...no wiring, but the controller is there.

Personally, I would say the CAPS engine with the newer OD transmission, and deal with any potential CAPS problems if they happen. You'll like the newer transmission a lot better, IMHO.

Must of been a school bus for giant children. LOL
I'd like to see picture of the bus. I've never seen one with the 8.3.

No doubt.

headache

Man I've been researching so much I have a headache.

I guessed I'm being a bit paranoid about the CAPS. There's just so many horror stories!

wah wahh I want everything... lol.

I know the p7100 is as bullet proof as the 8.3, I plan on driving this thing all over the country, probably even up to Alaska. I'm just wanting good power and stone cold reliability. Don't wanna be stranded in the middle of nowhere as an old man.

Just leave it yellow and put some mannequins in the seats...everyone will stop to help.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the CAPS that much
