Just picked up a 1960 JD 4010
 

Picked up a 1960 JD 4010 today. My dad sold this tractor about 10 years ago to a local farmer that I've been working with for about 11 years. Long story short I got the tractor back today as my own. It has been sitting for about 2 years in the back of the shop. Got her out today, loaded up with the backhoe, and hauled home. Also a good load to test my Fummins.

I plan to take the tractor to a few local farmstock pulls and use it around the house some.

The main question I have is: The tractor is still 24 volt system and it is not charging. Is it worth it to spend the money and convert it to a 12 volt system, or fix the 24 volt system and use it?

My grandpa had a 5010. Wide front axle. It was a real smooth riding tractor.

I'd fix the 24V system. Its a lot of work to convert them to 12V.

I'm not familiar with teh 24V systems...are they on a generator or can they be converted to an alternator?

Convert it to 12 volt. 24 volt systems are a pain. Take forever to charge the batteries back up during use.

It's a generator system. I thinks its popular to convert the whole system to 12 volts.

I'm looking into it but probably will just go ahead and do it.

Yip. Get rid of the generator. That would suck. :D

This. The Gen setup sucks bad. I swapped my 4020 to a 12v system and never looked back.

Wow you don't see the narrow fronts in the large series very often. Dad picked up a 4230 a few years ago that was a narrow front. He actually bought a wide front for the 4230, and put the heavier roll-a-matic front end on his 3020D narrow.

The narrow fronts definitely aren't as common in the 30 series compared to the 10 and 20 series, but they're out there. The 4010 I have doesn't have the roll-a-matic front end. It just has a solid front end. Was this a factory option? Could you order it this way? Or is it aftermarket?

Dad has the 68 3020D and it had a roll-a-matic front end from the factory as far as I know.

Yes the roll-a-matic came from the factory and I was wondering if all the narrow fronts got this or if it was an option to not get it?

Sorry misunderstood. They were optional as I remember seeing something in the manual describing all three.

Anybody have a recommendation on where to buy 12 volt kit? I've found one online for $510. It includes starter, Alternator, battery cables to make batteries work as 12 volt, adapter to put Alternator in generator bracket, and a voltmeter.

Good price? Anything else I should look for in a kit?

I would keep with the 24v system personally. Yes it does take some time to get right but I feel that once it is right, it will never let you down. We have a 3010 deere that was converted to a 24v system before we purchased it. It caught fire 4 summers ago after the solenoid stuck and over loaded the wires melting them down...........that will teach you everything about the 24v system. Now my only problem is that my younger brother boiled one of the batteries adn it won't start if it is colder than 50 degrees

Got it all wired up except for the lights. I did the 12v conversion and it is working great! The conversion was very straightforward. Cleaned it up and replaced the missing sheet metal, I will get some pictures up soon. She did pretty well in her first pull last weekend! Also I checked on the serial number and it is in fact a 1962 model.

Reopening

It's obviously been awhile since I have updated this thread, but a lot has happened in the past year and four months.

Just a little refresher....
This was my dads tractor until he sold it about ten years ago. I got it back from the local farmer he sold it to. It had been sitting unused it the back of his shop for about two years. I got it home cleaned it up a bit, replaced the missing sheet metal and converted it to a 12 volt system.

That brings us to this spring/summer. I decided that the old 13.6 tires were just too little so I picked up some 18.4 x 38 tires and used rims. Got those installed and the injection pump went out. I replaced the pump and got it running right again. I had some trouble with getting the new pump to run correctly, come to find out the return line was plugged from the seals in the old pump coming apart.

Then I decided to propose to my gf (now my wife) while driving this tractor back in the fields on a picnic. She now calls it the wedding tractor. We both wanted a hayride between our wedding and reception. There was no other tractor in her mind that could fulfill that duty but this 4010. I asked my dad to be the driver and he said he would as long as I made the tractor look good once again. So we got to work.

My dad, a buddy, and I tore the tractor down, cleaned, sanded, prepped, and painted it in time for the wedding. During the tear down I decided to replace the cracked oil pan that had started leaking much worse in the past 6 months. I got the decals put on a week and a half before the wedding.

Nice job! That's gonna be something to pass on to your kids for sure! Makes me want to finish the 4020 in my profile picture. It hasn't has sheet metal since we rebuilt the engine back in 09 haha its all been sitting primed in the garage for years. I've always loved the look of the narrow fronts. I'll have to get a 4020 one someday after seeing this all shined up. Congrats on the marriage!

That looks good! We farm with a 3010 nf. I want a 4010/4020 just like that for the extra power.
