Cummins 12 valve into 706 IH

We just found out that one of our 706's that had a 310 German diesel in it had a ring go bad in one of the cylinders and the cost to fix it is around $7500. looked into getting a 358 German diesel but the motors we found were also $7500. My question is has anyone swapped a Cummins into an IH close to this model? I have heard of a guy in PA that makes the hardware for the swap. This option seems reasonable due to us having two extra Cummins 12 valve motors in the garage. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Leamans in PA is the guy I know of who makes the adapters, not cheap though. I wanted to swap a 4bt into a 450 I have, but the cost of the needed adapters was more than I would have into the engine and tractor.

Heres the link to his site:

Another option that would be cheaper would be to swap a 400 series engine in it. (DT414, 436, 466, etc.) That can be done using all IH parts, and parts for those engines are easier to find and cheaper than the german diesels

Depending on availability in your area the 361, 407, and 429 IH engines will bolt in as well.

I know there's a couple places makin the adapters for the B and C series cummins though. I'll try and do a little diggin for ya.

I would agree with the idea of using a 400 series engine due to cost and the availability of parts besides the proven track record of any of them. We had a 1066 swallow a valve and put a 466 in it and besides the higher hp, fuel consumption actually dropped because the thing wasn't even laboring. If you didn't want anything that big, you could go with the 360 which is just as reliable and available (truck versions more than the ag versions). Just my .02 good luck with it

We have a 766 that had a N/A 360 that seized up and we put a turboed 360 from a bus. That would probably easier because they're cheaper than a 12 valve and you can still make decent power with them. Also that block was meant to go in those old IH's so you can get a rear engine housing easily and still use the same Trans and motor mounts. I'm not sure how different a 706 is from a 766 but a dt360 should be something to look into. Also you can find them with inline Bosch pumps, ours is an A pump slightly smaller than a P pump

The 706 is a little different than the 766. You would need the ag front and rear cover from any 400 series tractor to bolt the engine in (the covers work for both the 400 and 300 series). The front cover mounting tabs will need to be ground down to fit in the 706 frame rails and you will only be able to use one of the bolt holes (1066 or such frame rails would work without any modifications but then you would have to deal with the front end and sheet metal). As far as the clutch goes it will be different also, and I believe that there is a setup using a 966 hydro flywheel to make it work but dont hold me to that.

We put a CR 5.9 cummins in a 706. Think he still has the adaptor if you're interested...

Send me a pm and I can get you his contact info if you have any questions.

Heres video of it from the last pull it made last year.

A friend of mine worked for a guy that put a 12v in his 806. He did it 2yrs ago, seems to still be pretty happy with it.

Theres an 806 that pulls around here with a 12v in it. He's way under cubed for the competition he runs against though. I don't think he can get light enough for the 360ci class we have.

I have a 656 utility that we installed a cummins in. Everything works great. I like the cummins engine if you already have one, but you will spend a decent amount on the swap still.
