My truck hates me.

My truck has a pretty notable miss all the way through the rpms. It starts hard and has pretty good white smoke. I keep thinking it’s timing but here’s the list of mods
99 dodge 3500
Stage 4 Farrel 215
Weston 6x13 vco
Fass 150
Colt stg 4 cam
078 lines 120 cross overs
Eat soot timing gear.
63 sxe over s475

I originally bought truck with a cracked block. I replaced with a 55 new rings bearings and had the block checked. The injectors pop off were out of wack and had Weston freshen them up at that time it had a 7x11

Truck ran decent but I always thought it had a miss at low rpm at hazed pretty good. Also hard starting. Well it seemed to get worse last fall. At this time I’ve drove it about 6k miles. So I checked the timing which is keyed right on 20. I went through cracking lines loose and I found #1 to be the problem. Switched it to #3 and it seemed to follow it. So I sent the injectors back to Weston to have him check them everything seemed fine. Well I found my secondary housing cracked so I decided to upgrade to a 6x13 and a 63sxe.

The original conversion was done at 130k by a good friend.
At 141k I bought it with a cracked 53
It’s currently at 149k with 100 miles on the injectors.

I’ve went over valve lash and timing 3 times. Everything seems good. I bumped the timing to 24 with no real difference. Shutdown key is in and working probably. I’ve tightened the ofv up from 40 psi idling all the way to 55 psi.

The truck has heavy white smoke and an almost pop out the exhaust if you hold the brake and spool it. Definitely miss and shake all the way through the rpms. Also it gets hot quick 900 cruising and get into it makes 80 psi and pegs the 1600 with hardly any black smoke till the upper end.

Really seems like timing to but I’d think if I was close it wouldn’t be terrible like this. Just really seems like fuel but from internal pump work I think I’ve covered everything pretty well. Thanks for any input

Truck running cracking number 5 and the truck does not change tune. Pulled and inspected the DV. Nothing notable or obvious on that either.

Scribe that barrel for reference and turn it to add some fuel, if it doesn't change, turn it back.

Number 5 compared to number 1 only thing I’ve found

95cummins5.9 03-21-2018 07:55 PM

Little shorter ?

TheSilverBullet 03-21-2018 08:00 PM

Springs are the same just the end piece is scared up on #5 compared to the others I’ve pulled

What does it do if you free rev it to like 3500 rpm in neutral?

YOUNG GUNS15 03-22-2018 08:58 AM

Did you flip the spring and seat in the Dv holder just to show us or did you pull it from the pump that way? If it came out that way Flip the spring and seat.

Also put a known good set of DV’s in your pump, I had a Dv crack once. It was not visible to the naked eye, but under pressure inside the pump the crack would open up slightly and cause a miss.

Check washer/gasket under delivery valve

He said no compression on that hole last night about 10 o'clock via text. Dude has some crap luck.

TheSilverBullet 03-22-2018 07:12 PM

Yup I got no compression on 5. Hoping it’s just a gasket but might have washed the cylinder. This trucks forever home is bay 3 in the shop lol. Going to bore scope it tonight and see how the cylinder is and hopefully have the head off this weekend and go from there.

Seems to have some minor cracking in the head

Ouch. That same thing cause a really freaking annoying tick tick tick tick on my 12v.

TheSilverBullet 04-15-2018 09:38 AM

It honestly didn’t have any noticeable top end noise. Hell it didn’t run too bad either for only using 5 lol. Luckily good friend of mine had an 0ring and ported head laying around. Headed to machine shop this week and hopefully get this truck all figured out!

That dv stop and shims go on the top side of the dv spring, not the bottom. Running it like that is going to cause excess dv wear.

Don't follow this advice unless you want to send the pump back to be recalibrated.

I flipped it around for the picture they were in correctly. I did move the barrel but it is marked and turned back to the mark. You want me to send it back in?

If you want it even you'll have to. You can't mark the barrel precisely enough to get it back within spec.

Rotten luck for sure.
