One piece drive shaft ???

What are you guys opinions on doing a one piece rear shaft? It would be on an 03 4-door long bed. Its lifted 6 inches and i'm having problems with eating carrier bearings.

I know axle wrap is contributing to the problem, but have been told by a few people a one piece rear would be the way to go? What do you guys think? Its my DD truck. Would be used to haul my pulling truck and play on the streets.

Also what are your opinions on ladder/traction bars for the 3rd gens? What sets are best to stop axle wrap? And are there any good sets that aren't $900 ?? All the ones I seem to find are $8-900. Just seems a little expensive to me?

12vriviera 09-14-2010 08:51 PM

did the lift include a shim to drop carrier bearing down some?
that would be one heck of a long single piece drive shaft!

Dodgentwo 09-14-2010 08:52 PM

Yea it has some shims on it. It was lifted when I got it.

12vriviera 09-14-2010 08:57 PM

have you had the shaft you have balanced? it seems that a properly built 2 piece would suit you better... just my $.02
maybe supershafts will kick in or pm him....

Dodgentwo 09-14-2010 08:58 PM

He is the one who said a 1pc

12vriviera 09-14-2010 09:00 PM

well then.. when are you ordering it?

I only have a 3" Carli lift but my megacab one-piece driveshaft has been holding up great. If you can weld or know someone that can weld, take a look at the DIY traction bar kit from Wide Open Performance. I don't have the link right now but it's on their website. If I ever get a new truck, traction bars will be one of the first mods I do to it.

if you destroyed your new bearings that quick, you have a angle issue. Did you install more shims when you installed the new bearings ? Like I said, if you're lifted 6", you need at least 3"s of drop on the bearing.... maybe even 4". I've seen a few happy with a one piece but, none race or pull. Those who have all went back to a 2 piece.

My truck is lifted 6" on 37" and since doing what I showed you in the other thread, I've not had a problem. IMO, you're going to have issues with a one piece and 6" of lift.

Doghouse Diesel Performance

But, talk with Rich at Dog House, because you may need a spacer for your lifted truck, not certain

"For manual transmissions, this will only fit trucks with the G56 transmission. Trucks with the NV5600 have reported that the drive shaft is approx 2" too long and bottoms out on the slip yoke."

"For 2003 - 2004 trucks, you MUST insure that you have the HO motor and 11.5" rear axle. These drive shafts WILL NOT work with the SO motor and the 10.5" rear end"

1-Piece Aluminum Drive Shaft for 03 - 09 Cummins

With my 4.5" lift, there was plenty of room in the splines/slip yoke

I ordered mine about 4:00 PM last Tuesday and it was at my house at 12:30 PM last Friday......this thing is oh so beautiful!

Install took less than one hour.....

I removed the four bolts securing the shaft at the axle end and placed a jack stand under the stock shaft

I then removed the two bolt for the carrier bearing and placed the shaft on another jackstand

I then slide the front of the shaft out of the tcase and used a hard rubber mallet to smack the flange, at the axle end (rusted)

I then removed the four bolts for the carrier bearing mounting bracket and slid the new shaft in place

I cannot believe how frigin heavy the stock shaft is, compared to the Mopar aluminum shaft

With my small lift, there were not any issues with the front stub shaft and the splines

Enjoy the pics:

The trucks accelerates very smooth, day and night difference

I looked at the rubber support on the carrier bearing and it looked good installed on the truck. However, once it was remove, it was completely rotted away, and was shot

That won't work with the NV5600? Do you know if they make one that will?

D45 09-15-2010 09:47 AM

Call Rich at Dog House Diesel and ask......not sure

badbowtie 09-15-2010 01:45 PM

Mopaqr does not make one that will work with the NV5600. I used ADM the company that started with the DMax shafts. They offer a u break it they will replace it warranty. I however do agree with triton with 6" lift you will be at extreme angles with just 2 ujoints. I would go with the upgraded spicer bearing and bracket that he runs if I had that much lift.

I work the yoke splines are the same along with the u-joint, just take it to a driveline shop and get it shortened, should be 50-100 bucks.

I'm thinking of going this route (just to get rid of all the extra schit that can break).

Can anyone confirm (or deny) that they correct p/n for a 3500 QC is 52123220AA

??

P.J 10-12-2010 08:24 PM

Okay, lets try this again...

52123162AA

Is THAT the correct number for an 06 3500 QC LB w/ the G56?

I am really wanting a one piece for my NV5600.. My local dodge dealer says this is the fix for my vibration issue. ( I assume they haven't really looked into it, since I can't seem to find any DS that will fit the NV5600 that is one piece)... Has anyone located a 1 piece DS that will work with the NV5600 in a QC LB 4x4?

I've read on other forrums you have to have the one for the G56 shortened a few inches to make it work on an NV5600 truck. Driveline shop might charge you 100$ or so to do it. I replaced mine with a 1 Piece ds and love it! All take off shudder and strange vibrations are gone. Good lucking

poriggity 10-24-2010 03:02 PM

That's what I am gathering too.. Does anyone know how much the DS has to be shortened by? Another question I have, is why is my local dealer telling me that the fix for my vibration is a one piece ds, that is going to cost me $1100 installed... yet no one makes a one piece shaft for my truck. HMMM... Really makes me want to find another dealer.

I get all my driveshafts done at Carolina Driveline. They do awesome work! Heck, he even came out and repaired a u-joint that I obliterated on the trail on a weekend lol

Carolina Driveline: Driveshafts Speed Balanced Steel and Aluminum

He has built the shafts that were in my toyota crawler, XJ crawler, my 74 CJ5 as well as the above shaft in my 2003 2500.

homewrecker 10-27-2010 11:28 AM

Dodge does make the one piece shafts to fit the nv5600's in cc longbeds. My friend ordered one and installed it last year. No cutting or mods were required. If I recall he got it from the Dodge dealer in Bremerton, Wa that has the online store.
