turbo choice? 05 common rail, 03/04 pistons, ddp 30% overs. 6spd,

Wrapping up my nee build on the truck and need help:
05 common rail 5.9
Mahle .020" over 03/04 style Pistons
Balanced bottom end
Head studs
Stock cam/springs
DDP injectors with 30% over nozzles
BD 2nd gen manifold
Stock cp3 (looking to leave it that way)
BD lift pump/dual filter setup
Nv5600 with valair dual disc organic clutch.
4.10 gears
Calibrated Addiction (Kentucky) tuning it
I do tow with the truck regular, but usually nothing over 10-12k (GCVWR of roughly 18-20k) most times it's a race car on an open trailer (5-5500lbs)
Looking for a box turbo, no gate, let fuel dictate the boost (all of it) I get recommendations of everything from s362 to s464. And everything from a 65mm turbine exducer to 83mm.
Guys Care to give me some guidance? I understand it's not going to spool as early as stock, but really don't want something ive gotta keep up over 2k to get any wind from.

Thanks in advance.

177283 63/68/.88 t4 will spool well but not have a huge top end
177284 66/74/.91 t4 will spool slower but have much more top end.

a 66 will surge on a quick throttle lift more than most people like. these are my 2 recommendations for a cheap box turbo that might tow once in awhile. obviously the 63 will tow better and the 66 will make more HP. both need a t4 manifold or an adapter.

I would stick with something closer to stock if you are towing. Stay below the 73 wheel in the s300 frame. s400 will be too laggy.

Sounds like the 63/68/.88 is what I'll go with. Manifold is t4 so thankfully no adapter gonna be needed.

I'm not sure what "top end power" is considered with a setup like this, but if it'll pull clean to the stock governor, I'd be happy.

a gated housing typically comes in 12 or 14cm or .7 and .8 AR. a .88 is tight to not have a gate. you could run into some drive pressure issues if you flog on the truck much.

Mightywhitey03 08-17-2018 08:25 AM

Are there .91 housings for the 68mm wheel?

turbo2387 08-17-2018 09:09 AM

not in a box turbo. and im not sure otherwise

Yes there are .91 housings available for the 68mm wheel. I prefer the .83 though.

I’m with Mr. Taylor. .88 T-4 is open scroll and spoolup will suck. It’d be worse than a .91 twin scroll. I run the twin scroll .83 on virtually all the S300’s I install. Granted, they all go on 6.0 Powerstroke’s, but they turn more rpm than a Cummins a lot of the time and I’ve not seen issues with drive pressure getting to the high side until we get into the 3,600+ rpm range on a setup that is 550-600hp.

Ok so just to clarify, a 63/68/.83 (twin scroll) would be fine for what I intend on doing?

I think it would be a good choice. I personally would spend a little more to have the SX-E S363/68 with the .83 T-4 on it. You’ll have to have some machine work do on the exhaust downpipe flange and compressor cover outlet, and I’m sure Mr Taylor or Infinite Performance could hook you up. We’re lucky in that regard on a 6.0. Stock downpipe and intercooler pipe hook up with no modifications needed.:D

Why not go with a s300gx ?
57(or 58 billet)65/14 ?
Not real spendy, and would spool nicely on your setup with some towing.

Pardon my ignorance, as I'm really not sure what the difference is on the sx-e line.
I'm a machinist by trade so modifying anything wouldn't be an issue. Just not really sure what needs done

The 62/68 fmw works really nice for what you are describing, if it was me I would be looking at a twin scroll turbine housing if you are set on t4. With good tuning a .91 will spool pretty good and you have a little extra fuel to help it out.

I have a 63/68/83 on my 12v ,wanted a turbo that is responsive and can still tow with .

I helped a friend put a 63/68/.88 on his 12v a long time ago, and it was way too laggy for a 63mm. The 36x15.5 tires didnt help, but it was enough to convince me to never have a .88 open housing on a truck again.

I swapped the 88 open for a divided .83 on mine .

Any thought to selling 2nd gen manifold, getting a 3rd gen one and trying a modified he351 such as 63.5/67 Taterbuilt, fleece cheetah, or something equivilant. If you wanna stay 2nd gen t-4 I say sxe362/68

Really hate to sell off a manifold I just recieved last Thursday lol. Fan boi in me wanted the 2nd gen manifold to help with the sound some. I know... Ridiculous reason for spending money.
62/68/.83 divided?
