2005 G56 to NV5600 conversion questions

Well the G56 left me Friday night so looks like I'll probably be doing NV5600 conversion, since theres no since putting a G56 back in it and can't afford to put a ZF-6 in it right now. My truck is a late 05 4x4 with manual transfer case.

My questions are:

#1. Since my truck is a late 05 and they put both NV5600 and G56 in them in 05 will the NV5600 be a direct swap other then changing the clutch to work with the NV5600?

#2. If no, what else needs to be changed.

#3. What has to be done to make a Nv5600 from a 2wd truck work with my transfer case?

#4. Anyone else that has done this swap have any helpful hints or warnings?

Thanks guys.

Im not real convinced the nv5600 is a better transmission. A bearing went down on mine at 100k and took 6th gear and reverse with it. To put a nv5600 in your truck i think you would have to buy the plate that bolts between the motor and bellhousing, im thinking the bolt patterns are different between the g56 and nv5600. Is your g56 push button or manual transfer case? You would have to get the nv transfer case and it has a manual shifter. Also your driveshaft lengths are different, and a different shifter pole is used.

Gus,

The trans output shaft would need changed. Transfer case will work with nv4500 and nv5600. With the nv4500 you would most likely need a long drive shaft. I unsure on the 5600 to g56 shaft length. The front shaft might need to be lengthend also.

Are you talking about on a 2wd tranny or on both?

Matt,

I just noticed in your signature it says " 7" STACK" didn't it use to say " 7" STACKS"? did you take one of them off? If so you wanna sell it to me?

Are you the one that made the thread about it? I seen someone made a thread about the swap a while back but it was on a newer truck maybe even a 6.7. I was just hoping it would be easier swap for mine since the 05s came with both trannys.

I know very little about the G56 or NV5600 but the ZF6 is a solid trans. I didn't have any issues with mine other than syncros till about 195K and I sledpull a fair bit and make a living towing 25,000-30,000lbs so it's seen the abuse. I snapped a 6th gear syncro assembly at 195K and rebuilt the whole trans. I'm at 207K now and it's apart again for an input and shift forks. I'm in that 580-625wrhp range.

Yeah I had a ZF-6 in my 03 duramax I had and loved it. Thats what I would like to have in the truck but don't have money to get one and buy the destroked adapter plate.

well I thought i had a thread that had what i did....

I know that i
Fliped and drilled new holes in the crossmember

shorted the rear drive shaft 2"

made the front 2" longer

the clutch is not the same i forget why starter and ring gear spacing....

bellhousing is the same, transfercase is the same,

my transfercase what eletronic and there was nothing to change there the one thing that i had to do was rewire the reverse switch to the old style connector.

Great thank you again. Does the flywheel have to be changed or just the disks to work with the NV5600 input shaft?

Driving it do you like it worse or better then the G56?

Have you considered an Eaton 5 or 6 speed? If you are going to have to buy adapters and clutch and everything, why not go with the heavier tranny and be done with it? I had an Eaton 6 speed in my GMC topkick and loved it. It shifted just like my nv4500. Nice and smooth and the gears are spaced real nice. I dont know if it will actually even fit, but I figured Id throw it out there for an idea.

No I haven't..don't really have the money to throw at a project that big.

HotRodCrewCab 02-01-2010 08:31 PM

Actually... the tranny's arent too bad... Ive see them under 1k all the time. I just dont know what it would take as far as making a new crossmember and adapting to the xfer case. And if you are gonna go that far... ya might as well go with a 13... lol

Just for kicks, Under what conditions did your G56 go? And what broke?

Taking off from a stop in 3rd gear...in a hurry. Not a boosted launch just came off quick and snap!!! Dunno what broke but the only gear the moves the truck is 5th and the shifter won't even go into 4th gear location. It will go in all the other gear locations, just nothing happens. There was no grinding or anything.

Had to limp it home 9 miles in 5th gear, thru two small towns over one big hill, and thru a stop sign. lol

Cummin_Get_Some 02-03-2010 06:08 AM

Well pretty sure its gonna be a NV5600 or NV4500 just need help deciding which one... why do you guys think one is better then the other?
