2.5 puller project

I have already posted in the "get a quote" section, but i figured id post here to get feedback from individuals on my ideas. Im starting to order parts for my 2.5 puller project.. thoughts regarding the following are appreciated.

Nv4500 3600 or 3850 dual disk clutch 1 3/8 input.. truck will never make huge power, I'm guessing 500-600ish hp I hope, sled pull mostly street only occasionally... (auto to manual swap) I'm worried about "over-clutching" the truck with the 3850... thoughts?

Injectors and dv's... I have sent smokem a PM, still waiting on a reply, but I'm thinking 5x18 and full cuts... also open to suggestions...

Already received several quotes for 4.10 and 4.88 ring and pinion/carrier/spool etc... thank you for that... regearing will probably be a ways down the road, limited funds

Got adjustable 70"-80" cpp traction bars coming... they're on sale currently

Also looking for a charger, talking to a member about a billet WS charger... but also open to any offers/suggestions, no commitment made yet...

air-to-air intercooler will be down the road a ways as well, i want one but its outside of budget

truck already has a raptor 100(??)gph lift pump, will be removing that and installing FASS 150 or 200 with a beans sump, along with fuel pressure gauge at the pump...

truck does have egt and boost gauges, and 60lb valve springs currently... no idea on pump modifications (if any) currently, i will be checking the pump out (size, plate- afc mods etc...)

Umm, once again my budget is fairly limited, the whole idea behind this build is just to have fun, hence why I'm not going all out with crazy headwork, $2500 pump, cam, etc... maybe down the road I'll get to that point, but for now just looking to get started, so I'm open to suggestions on if you think I could use it/need it for pulling...

Any help or thoughts/input would be greatly appreciated...

I can help a little more on the deal if you wanna out the name on the truck.

The vp truck we run has a 3850 valair sintered iron clutch. It's a workstock truck. Holds up good. Any video seen of it was about 100hp under what it will be doing this coming week. Intercooler was blown in 20+ places. LOL

Then 2 3rd gen builds are starting week so we will have more results with the limited 3 wheels we have now.

I would personally love to see 5x.018s on a 500-550cc pump. I can also help with that. Send me a PM with everything you want.

Call ValAir on the clutch. They are great people!! :Cheer:

I would probably do the gears and clutch near the top of the list

Penni 07-24-2013 07:20 AM

I would love to do gears, but that is $2k total to do it right, that I was going to put towards a charger and injectors... I will do gears soon, got to save some more money first... thank you for your feedback sir!

I forgot to mention I'll be fabricating some removable bump stops as well, I'll be checking to rule book first though

Any other thoughts or suggestions? Any are very appreciated!

If you have a shop do them it would be close to that mark I bet.

gearhart73 07-24-2013 08:05 AM

I have a spool for a dana 60 4.10 and lower (numerically) if you decide to run 4.10 gears with lockouts on the front.

Levi_plummer 07-24-2013 08:21 AM

Get a 3850 with a bronze inlay in the flywheel so it is rebuildable. Most street clutch's will not hold up to the abuse of pulling. I don't think you will over clutch it.

Ring and pinion $500 for both, spool is $500, then $375 for new carrier for front... master rebuild kit for Dana 80 is $300ish and then $265ish for Dana 60...

dedicated puller..... $500 for both gears, $100 for open rear carrier(weld it), weld front get a ring gear spacer. Reuse all the bearings. Sell your old r&p's and rear limited slip. Shouldn't have much money in it at all if you do it smart.

zstroken 07-24-2013 09:19 AM

Yes I don't think you need a master rebuild kit.

ClamDigger4 07-24-2013 09:21 AM

Why do you need full rebuild kits. Just get a spacer for the front carrier and weld it. Find a yukon spool for the rear, new or used.

I'm obviously over thinking this... my apologies, I'd be open for this if I can do this for $700 ish... where can I find an open carrier for $100?

Outside of the gears, I'm talking to Dan from Valiar for a clutch as we speak/type

Waiting on a call back from Weston

Still up in the air on a 2.5 charger

Are you wanting to pull workstock or 2.5? You make mentions of both. And up until this year we had a guy that pulled workstock with 4.88 and an hx40. Not sure what was done for his fueling but it was a heck of a runner and wasn't far behind trucks way more powerful than his so I would put the gears and clutch farther on up your list if it were me. Also, if you are looking for an intercooler upgrade look up Abraham Diesel Performance on facebook. Haven't run one but I have seen them and they have some darn good craftsmanship and are built to withstand 150 psi I believe. One of these is probably going to be on my to-do list once this season is over

Penni 07-24-2013 11:28 AM

Around where I am, work stock and 2.5 are synonymous most of the time... but I will be heavily looking into gears, looking at costs and more quotes now

Work Stock and 2.5 while sometimes and in some places the same thing, CAN be drastically different. Some work stock require factory appearing turbos while 2.5 general restriction is 2.5 true bore. A 64mm HX40 isn't going to outflow a S400 chassis turbo or last as long. I'm in the process of this same dilemma.

Unfortunately for us work stock and 2.5 are so closely intertwined that they invariably screw us to a degree, some say factory appearing charger, some stock bumper, some no injection of water, factory intake shelf, etc. unfortunately you gotta build it to the rules of the most people you think you'll be competing at.

USARMY12V 07-24-2013 08:26 PM

FWIW, get a S400 turbo if the rules allow it.

Necessary:
Good tires (BFG'S or STS)
Traction bars you have
Gearing
Research hitch builds on here
Good clutch
Good u-joints
Governor springs
Valve springs
Injectors
DV

Good stuff:
S464
Balanced pump
Bowl, throat and port matching P&P (leave intake shelf on)
Pack on weight
