i want to put together a tractor for local pulls.
I did some tradin with a guy and ended up with a 5.9 with a tractor p-pump in pieces. my thoughts r 400-600hp depending on how the winter goes. what turbo should I be looking for? injectors? I don't know much about 6bts, im a ford guy, ive done work on them just not performance stuff

pry 7-9000lb class, with uncut 18.4/38 rubber.

im looking for some insight on which tractor to use, for sure an oliver, from what ive seen an 1850 is what I should be looking for? I think im going to call around to some scrap guys and find one that's beat to crap or blown up.

was thinkin pry get rid of the hydro power and build a straight shaft. what bell housing should I look for? what clutch would work for this? how do I support the throwout bearing?

im trying to keep this fairly cheap, as I don't have a pile of money to put into this and I like doing all the work myself, makes it more interesting

any thoughts, ideas, experience, pictures would be much appreciated
 
There is a member here who does a bunch of conversions. 24VF350 is his name. He can hook you up with parts most likely.

600 HP is a bunch of power for farm stock 7000-9000lb class. IMO
 
Yea brad maibach. I got his number from swindells in Indiana. I haven't gotten around to call him yet

That's ok I'd rather have too much power than not enough, I can always throttle it
 
A 1850 would be a good choice. If you plan on running 7k you need to build it light, especially if you have Firestone radials, a cage, and a wide front. 6500 is about as light as one can get with a cast iron front frame.

No hydraulics, pto, 3pt, straightshaft, lots of aluminum, and either very light or easily removeable rear weight rack.

1850 diesels had a perkins in them, that frame is the easiest to drop a 5.9 in.

All 1750's and 1850 gas tractors had waukesha's. They can be used if you grind the frame out for the 5.9 to fit.

Bellhousings. The 1850 diesel will use a SAE#3 setup, you need the SAE#3 housing for the 5.9, use the rear half from the 1850, and bolt the front plate from your hydra-power back in the housing to support your throwout bearing.

Waukesha's use their own one piece bell housing. I'm working on making adaptors to bolt the Waukesha bell on the 5.9.

Sae setups need their own flywheel since they are bigger diameter than the Dodge flywheels. Normally a custom steel flywheel and 2 or 3 disc clutch.

If the Waukesha/cummins adaptor thing works out, I'm hoping to make it work with a off the shelf aftermarket dodge clutch setup.

What are the other rules of this class?

We pull against a 1850 with a 5.9 in it, runs pretty strong for what it is. He is running a hx52, and we pull 9k-12.5k classes with him.
 
How does a person tell which bell housing is which?

That would be handy if u could use off the shelf dodge parts. Deffinately no shortage of those around

Would I want to goto a solid trans input shaft too? Would I need to make on or is that a part that's available?
 
I am also looking to do a conversion and am looking to to put it in a 1850 for farm use and some pulling I tryed to pm 9724vf350 but i can't message yet. I am looking to talk to someone over the phone for this.

My father and I have been putting considerable thought into building an Oliver with a Cummins in it. Our club rules are limited to 3200 RPM, a Bosch A pump and a 2.65 charger. I'm guessing 600 hp with the limited RPM and fuel of an A pump is all well see. Thoughts?

It takes a impressive amount of abuse as far as I'm concerned. This year I took a couple teeth off 6th gear on the countershaft during a rough ride.

What weight classes are you figuring on running?
 
Our association calls it a Light Pro Farm class, that runs 6500 lbs, max of 410 cubes. Max tires can be are 20.8x34 or 18.4x38

What kind if power do you think your making? Upgrades to the trans and rear end I take it? I honestly have no clue what kind of power an A pump at 3200 rpm will make.

Cast frame or custom steel?

If steel I would be sort of tempted to consider a 1850 rear simply for the sake of many many easy gearing options, way better than a 16.

If cast a 16 chassis would be fine. A 18 chassis could be done at that weight, but it's gonna have to be skinny.

I do personally plan on going to a cast 18 chassis and making 6500 or less if I ever get enough other projects done.
 
I thought an 18 would be too heavy and not possible to get down to 6500lb. But I guess you lean tricks to get there. And I wanted to have weight to move around.

On the other hand ours rules do not have any chassis rules. Wheels can be either cast or custom pullers
