Changing Oil and Oil Filter on a 6.0 PSD
 

Was changing oil and filters on all the work trucks a couple weeks ago and decided to take some pics for a How-To for anyone interested in changing their own oil that hasn't done this before.

Here's some of the tools and supplies that you will need.

As always, when working on a vehicle...safety glasses:

Shop towels or rags:

Diesel rated oil...I use Valvoline Premium Blue 15W-40:

3/4" wrench for the oil drain plug:

Drain Pan (the bigger 15-16qt ones from the auto parts):

Oil Filter (I always use Motorcraft filters):

Funnel:

And while not needed...a creeper is nice:

Optional:
Latex Gloves....will help keep you clean and from getting used motor oil on them.

Be sure to allow the motor to sit for at least 20mins if you have been driving it. This will give the oil in the upper parts of the motor time to drain down into the oil pan and for the oil to cool off some.



I always start by cleaning and removing the oil fill cap:

Next, go underneath the truck and position the drain pan underneath the oil drain plug:

Using the 3/4" wrench, loosen and remove the oil drain plug:

Let the oil drain out into the pan:

While the oil is draining, I got back up top and change the oil filter. The oil filter on the 6.0 PSD is located on top of the motor in the middle. I use an adjustable crescent wrench to loosen the filter cap:

Finish loosening the filter cap by hand and remove the oil filter:

The oil filter snaps into the cap....pull the cap off of the filter separating the two:

There is an o-ring on the cap...remove the o-ring. You may need to use a small screwdriver or pick to be able to get the o-ring out of the groove:

Next take the new filter out of the box. The new filter comes with a new o-ring as well as instructions:

Lube up the new o-ring with clean oil:

And install the o-ring onto the cap:

Now, snap the new filter into the filter cap:

Next, reinstall the filter cap with the new filter. Be sure not to overtighten the filter cap.


With the oil filter changed, and all of the old oil now having drained you can choose to do the next step which is optional.

I normally like to hand thread the drain plug back in, and pour one quart of fresh motor oil in. Let it sit for a few minutes and then pull the drain plug and let that drain. This helps to flush out more of the old/dirty motor oil, IMO.

Now, you're ready to re-install the drain plug (again be sure not to over tighten).

With the drain plug in, you can start pouring in the fresh oil through a funnel in the oil fill neck.



15qts. of oil is what it the 6.0L PSD's capacity is.

With all the oil in, re-install the oil fill cap, check the level on the oil dipstick and you're done.


Be sure to properly dispose of the used motor oil. Many auto parts and service centers have used oil drop-offs.

awesome. i must agree with you on the safety goggles/glasses. eyes are one of the most important things to protect.

Do you need to use a torque set at 14 lbs wrench or just be carefully with the filter cap ? This is what I have been hearing not sure .

I've never used a torque wrench.....I just am sure not to over tighten it.

Save money by using the Fram filter. If you look at the filter it has the exact part number and stamp that the Ford filter has. Saves about 10 bucks.

Motorcraft filter at Walmart for 17 dollars now.

Fresh Rotella.....check. Savings account for new injectors.....check!

Nice write-up but I would stay away from the Rotella on a 6.0 if I were you.

Yeah I missed that the first pass through. Sorry about that! The Valvoline is tough to beat. I originally used Rotella and my injectors made a ton of noise in the upper rpms. As soon as I switched to Premium Blue Extreme all that noise went away and cold starts were 200% better.

Ford has actually tried to Deny Warranty Work on mine and my dads '06 6.0l's because we are running Rotella 15-40 in them.. Ford says Motorcraft 10-30..

Also, My father is a firm beleiver in this.. On his ole 6.9/7.3 IDI's every other oil change he'd drain the oil, then put 3 gallons diesel fuel in run it for a few minutes, and drain...Help clean it out..Can this be done on the 7.3/6.0 PSD?

I bet your injectors would absolutely love that! If you use good oil there should be nothing to clean out. Modern diesel oils are way better than those oil sludge commercials you see on TV.

Yep, all my trucks run better on the Valvoline (six 7.3s and three 6.0s). Need to get some of the Extreme Blue for my 07 as she'll be seeing plowing duty now.

Nice Post. This is my first powerstroke and I have 16 qts of rottella I am going to be taking back now. I found the page b/c I was looking for the filter on the bottom and couldn't find the thing. Thanks for the help.
