Looking for some turbo advice..
I've been running my Cummins swapped V10 since about March. Put it on the rollers in April (I think) and put down 418/967, on the HX35... Needless to say it's not loving life...
Signature is not complete, so here's my specs. 5spd, 3:55's, 285/75/16 tires, 5x012 injectors from PDP, Seth tuned pump (1994 5spd, 175?, I believe the max was 480cc on it), AFC washers modded, foot modded, Marine cam, shaved the head so I'm running the +20 head gasket. Did some clean-up on the head, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a "ported' head. Timing at ~16.5*, adjustable OFV. All the other usuals, head studs, valve springs, etc.. SO... I've been looking at turbos since I got this thing on the road. From my own reading here, I keep coming back to the s364.5/68 .80 turbo.. It's affordable, and seems to be what I'm looking for, but I would like some input from the more experienced crowd. This HX35 will not clear up at any RPM, obviously. I rarely tow, and not heavy when I do. Looking to keep a quick spool, even thought about paying the crazy extra for the .7 housing on the above turbo... I'm thinking with the right turbo, I should be well into the 500HP range.. Just want to get it right the first time.. :ft: |
Cruising some other threads, I remembered all the **** that I knew I would forget.
Has 191 DV's, and 4k springs as well... |
Bumping that timing to 20 should help you pick up a bit too.

I've thought about that, and probably will do that. I read many times about becoming harder to start with more advanced timing, so I was reserved. Bad thing is, it cranks for 5-6 seconds anyway if I don't lightly touch the pedal. My 215 pump on my old truck would hit in half a revolution. I don't like the way I starts now, and I guess it probably won't change for the worse with timing.

Go to power driven diesels website and watch the dyno videos. I am currently running the 64.5/68/.7 I wish I had gone with the 62/68/.7. It made more average horsepower. The bigger turbo made a few more peak ponies but less average due to slower spool times. They also showed the tighter turbine housings spool faster and make more power every time. I run my timing at 20*, you will want the tighter housing with the advanced timing.

20 degrees shouldn't cause an issue with starting. Some trucks just have to have a little throttle applied to start quickly.
For what your after it seems, id go with a 63 in some variation. I ran a 62/65/14 on a VP truck and hated it. |
I'm running 23* and no grid heaters. Its been in the low 20s lately. Starts in the first few rotations with just a little pedal for the first couple seconds. Idles low and loppy for about 10 seconds then clears up. I'll probably start plugging it in this week.

I was In your same shoes. i had a 64.5/73/14 and I hated it I ended up running my old ps 62/65/12 ( spools like stock on my truck ) and i bought the crazy Carl's piping kit and did some trading I now have a s471. I won't look back. More power than I need. A 71 or 75 under a sticker
Would be fun If twins aren't in your price range I would look at the 62/68. It made 14hp less than the 64.5 but spooled 2 secs faster. |
does anyone have any input on the difference in the dps 64/71/.70 and the new borg warner 64/73/.80 ? on a five speed truck with 23/25* of timing and 5x12s? may even go to a 5x14? the smaller exhaust housing and wheel that dps offers should be quicker spool up and they also offer the turbo in a ceramic ball bearing now so that also makes me think it will have an edge. will the dps turbo support over 600hp? the sxe364 is rate up to 800?

if youre doing any kind of city driving, I would keep the timing low and the turbo small.

You should just check out the performance drop ins. Calibrated Power's stealth turbo is like a fleece cheetah without the ridiculous price tag. Support 650rwhp and spools like stock. There is also a Borg Warner drop in from Power Driven Diesel I used on my 12v with 5x12 I loved it worked really good on a 400ish Hp truck and stayed clean in the city it was an auto though.
