Tow bar for 95' ram
 

I've been doing a little research online for building one. Eventually I'll own a trailer but until then it would be nice to have a way to get my truck home without calling a tow truck.

Have any of you tried towing a single cab with a tow bar ? My wife has towed me home a few miles before with a strap and she did alright but it is illegal here to use a strap. I have some old mobile home axles that I could probably build a large dolly but a simple tow bar would be a fun project. The tow rig would be a mega cab that weighs about 1k more than my truck.

I'd also like to use the bar to push trucks into my shop with my 95. I was thinking about making some tabs for the frame of my 95' and having some type of quick connect for the tabs and a ball hitch on the other end. There is a slight hill going into my shop and these diesel trucks are just a bit heavy and my knees aren't what they use to be.

Furthest I'd tow my truck would probably be 20 miles.

I made a tow bar out of some left over 2” square tubing I had so I could roll my truck around the housing area on base so it looked like I drove it to prevent getting towed. LOL

Probably 5’ long with a chain on each side for a bit of triangulation and a 2” hitch and a pivot in it to where I could tilt it up against the grille.
I replaced the crossmember under the core support with tubing, put a receiver in it and viola.
It wasn’t built for any highway towing though. I built it so I could put it in the front or back receiver and get it pushed in a garage whichever way I needed.

I bet you’d be fine beefing up where the bumper mounts on the frame and welding in some tabs that stick through the bumper. Bolt the hitch on when you need it, and throw some shackles on when you don’t.

Sticking some tabs through the bumper would be slick or just some rectangular holes in the bumper to slide the tow bar in. I have some 1/4" or 3/16" plate so the holes wouldn't have to be to big. If it rides behind my wife's truck nicely I won't ride in the towed truck. Mostly it will be so I can push trucks around. I have a back hoe here occasionally and I'm able to pick the trucks up by the threaded end of the ball hitch - hole in the fork. I still need to crawl under mine and take a closer look for a mount area
