Bilstein 5100.
|
Well I have ran Rancho 9000XLs and Bilstein 5100s on my CTD. I have ran those plus Pro Comps on a number of chevy 4x4 off road gasser trucks.
On the CTD the Ranchos were a little rougher ride than the Bilsteins, but they lasted three times longer. If you don't mind replacing the Bilsteins every year or so then they are the better ride. |

I just know the Bilsteins on mine were very nice ride for about a year. They just seemed to get worse from that point on. The Ranchos lasted around three years before they got to the same point. |
I had Skyjackers in my 12 valve, buddy had Blistiens in his. Hands down his rode better.
|
My Pro Comps have rusted up after just 3 years.
Won't buy them again. |
I'm pretty much down to Rancho 9000's and Fabtech's.

On a serious note, there are two series of bilsteins (5100s and standard yellow ones, not sure on model). The yellow ones are supposed to ride better than the 5100s but are NOT adjustable... You can get a set of the yellow ones on a chevy for around $250 IIRC $.02 |
Umm my 5100 bilsteins aren't adjustable. And they are the fancy nickel plate ones.

Red KYB Monomax
Firm shock...valved almost identical to the 5100 Bil's for 1/2 the price and lasts 3 times as long. Only shocks I'll run on a large truck. |

What about for drag racing I have heard go with the 9000's bug I'm on the fence
|
Unbroken are those on your 2wd ford? I'm looking for a good 2wd front shock also.

I just drive my truck way too much (when it's running :bang) to deal with a stiff ride. |

So what is measurably different between any of these shocks? And what shock absorber traits are important for what application?
|
Any advantage on the street from the piggyback style shocks?
More $, but are they worth it? |

Just a little FYI.... I did a quick search after coming across this thread. Cheapest I've ever found the Bilstein 5100's is $75 a piece. Geno's Garage I think? Looked up KYB Monomax on Rockauto.com and they are $55 $56 a piece + shipping. For chit's and giggles I looked them up on O'Rielly auto parts website...$75 a piece. I think I'll give them a try once I have the spare money...my tow pig has been in BAD need of shocks for a while. Thanks for the info Rich! |
i like my skyjacker nitro 8000s

Here you go: I couldn't get them to last on a CAR a few years ago.
On my 3500 4X4 I've run the Rancho 9000's with remote adjust and the (shiney nickel) Bilsteins that came in the KORE Pace kit. No comparison, the Bilsteins are a better ride. As I recall, KORE specs the valving in the rear (?) pair of shocks, the other pair is the Bilstein valving. |
The Kore Bilstein 5100 are said to have differant valving (Kore specific), acording to the Kore site. Rear shocks are Bilstein 6647. These are both used in their "Recon" and leveling kits.
Copied this from the Kore site. KORE Race Shop - Dodge Shocks Home > Dodge > Dodge Ram 2500/3500 > Dodge Shocks Dodge Shocks For the KORE HD Leveling Kit and Recon Series suspension systems KORE uses the legendary Bilstein 5100 Series shock absorber. This shock uses special valving that differs from the valving in all other KORE suspension systems. For most off road and many street applications linear valving works best. "Linear" means that the amount of force generated by the shock is relative to the speed of the shock shaft - the faster the shaft moves, the more resistance the shock generates. This is the best method to control repetitive bumps like washboard and hard hits called "gotchas." Like the linear valving of KORE remote reservoir shocks, the digressive valving of the 5100 Series Bilstein shocks maximizes control and limits body roll. But when bumps are encountered and shaft speed increases the force that the shock generates actually decreases. This gives a very smooth, yet controlled ride over pavement. The valving in the production "6647" Bilstein shock used in the rear of the Recon Series and sold world wide was developed by KORE in 2003 and adopted by Bilstein in 2004. In order to provide the softest ride possible while still retaining good towing and hauling characteristics, this shock employs a special one-way check valve on the compression side and maximum damping on the rebound side. When small bumps are encountered the shock literally provides little to no resistance on the upstroke, simply allowing the spring to do the work. Then when the spring rebounds to the neutral position, the shock maximizes control, so the rear can't "bounce back." It's the best solution for everyday pavement driving and slower speed off road use. Plus all Bilstein 5100 Series shocks are guaranteed for life. Bilstein 6647 Rear Shocks, Pair Price: $180.00 KORE developed the valving in these shock absorbers to maximize control and minimize harshness. It is the best shock absorber for the street an light trail use. The perfect OE replacement rear shock for 1994-2012 Dodge Ram 2500-3500 4x4 pickups. Is rock auto the best price on the monomax's?
|
Doubt you'll beat $55 a shock, when parts house's are getting $75

I run Icon, and have been extremely happy with their performance.
However, the best I would have to say King or Fox. |
Just ordered the KYB's from RockAuto.com
$246 for 4 shipped. I'll let you know what I think once I get them on. |
