Intercooler Water Flow
 
Has anyone done any back to back comparisons with different water pumps on the same intercooler? Not really happy with where my intake temps are at at the end of a run and after testing my water flow with a flowmeter I'm considering trying something different. I know there are guys going so far as to run a Hypro sprayer pump off the front of the crank to circulate water. I have a frozen boost type 55, also curious if a cooler that forces the air to change direction going in and out of the cooler works better?

I would monitor inlet and outlet of the water. That with inlet and outlet of the air, you can figure out exactly how well the unit is performing. You could even look at the pressure differential as well.

On a hot day I'm at 106-110 no matter what I do. Have repeatedly cleaned the cooler also.

What pump/pumps and fitting size?

Two Meizere with 1.5" lines on each. I have measured 15 GPM out of each. They are "rated" for nearly 60 GPM open flow.

What is water temp going in?
If its 32 dg, and you are getting 110dg air temp out, even at 15gpm(pretty decent water flow), i would say its time to find a better intercooler.

Does one like this get a little better uniform air flow through it? I can see on mine where the incoming air gets "blasted" through the core in a small area instead of spreading out

yes you want the air to go into a large plenum and turn 90 deg. this actually distributes air evenly across the core.

On our old setup we ran two of those type 55 style welded together. The biggest bilge pumps I could buy with 1.5 lines. Had a setup with sprayer bars in our ice tank to evenly distribute water across our ice. We we're melting 80 pounds of ice in a run. Intake temps post intercooler on the dyno were around 55 degrees.

The water temp will rise as it goes through the cooler, you want to have the coldest water(coming out of the icebox), on the air outlet of the intercooler. I don't know what the internal portion of your intercooler looks like so this might be irrelevant.

I had a data logger with 4 channels set up a few years back. Intake pre and post cooler and water temp pre and post cooler. We found that the our best overall results were had cycling the full capacity of water 3 times per run. This was using a 15 second window. That was the average for a hook from pump triggered before clutch out to clutch in pump off. I found that cycling the water at a slower rate increased the heat transfer and allowed the cooler to work the best.

His frozen boost cooler has been modified. He added fittings to the other side of the intercooler so it water flows straight through. So water doesnt go across the core and back out the same side like a standard frozen boost intercooler.

You either need a larger frozen boost intercooler/use multiple or purchase an intercooler with a more effiencent core. This becomes even more important with these smoothbore turbos because of the high boost numbers.

I have a hard time believing 55 deg temp. I'd like to see a log over the course of a run. We see 100-110 on a 3000 chiseled running 3 3800 pumps.

Did you internally modify the cooler? If not have you actually tested to see if both pumps keep working? We tried this on a frozen boost and it worked for about 10 seconds then killed the flow of one pump. We were using a type 53 with 2 new rule3800 pumps.
