Budget Beater!
I hit the track and the dyno a few weeks back for the first time with the Budget Beater. Its a 94 2wd reg cab long box automatic that i picked up for $3200. so far i have put around 700 bucks into it and have been pretty happy with its results. Truck was completely stock except for and AFE intake when i bought it. So far i have added 4kgsk, rack plug, lockup switch, 191 dv's, no plate, 60lb springs, HE351cw, 4in exhaust to 6in stack, 16*, and AFC has been tuned by me. Truck layed down 332hp and 724tq. After the dyno i headed to the track and was able to make three runs. first run i ran a 14.7 @ 88mph w/ OD off and was maxed out in 3rd gear. second run i spun off the line pretty bad and ran a 16.3 @ 93mph w/ OD on. the third and final run i made was the best but still not the best it can do. I ran a 14.5 @ 94mph w/ OD on. The truck with OD on has almost no third gear and shifts to 4th very quickly and slows me down a bit. Next time at the track i will run with OD off and take full advantage of third gear then puch the little button and let 4th kick in and hopefully shoot me into the 13's. here is my time slip of the best run i made.
R/T ... .229 60' ... 2.182 330 ... 4.582 1/8 ... 9.344 MPH ... 74.89 1000 ... 12.172 1/4 ... 14.561 MPH ... 94.30 |
cool, locking overdrive out until your near the desired shifting rpm is the only way to race.
|
The best way is to splice a tap wire into the overdrive solenoid control wire and command overdrive with a toggle switch. Just run with OD/Off and hit the toggle switch about 1 second before you want OD.
Then for daily driving, let the PCM control overdrive like usual. |
I already have the factory OD button next to the cup holders. Wouldn't this do thesame thing? Or are you just saying it is easier to flip a switch than push a button?
|
On my truck, the button is unreliable. It's old and doesn't always activate or deactivate the first time I push the button. It also seems like there is more of a delay waiting for the PCM to command OD compared to when I flip my toggle switch.
It's only a 1 hr job to wire up a couple of switches, 1 for lock-up, and 1 for OD. Well worth the time investment in my opinion. |
I wired up the lockup switch already and love that thing! where is the OD solenoid and what color is the control wire i need to tap into? also do i need to ground it like the lockup switch or do i need to supply power to it?

For your viewing pleasure here are some pics of the truck and the turbo swap. i will get some more later of the single stack it has now.

And yes, you just ground the wire when you want to command overdrive just like a lock-up switch. Your beater truck looks nice, almost too nice to beat on....... almost! I'm really hoping to see a 12 second pass with my beater next week at the track. What's your next goal and what's the "budget" build plan to achieve it? |

It actually looks alot nicer in the pictures. I took the pics right after i waxed it too haha. tons of scratches and dents. A tad less of a beater than yours but a beater none the less. :lolly: With your looser converter and being able to spool that huge turbo i think 12's are very possible. What lift pump are you using to supply the P7100? I want to throw a s475 under the HE351 with some 5x0.018's and hopefully run a high 11 with it. and do all that for under $5,000. I really need to tear into the tranny and beef it up but was rebuild about 30k ago by the first owner(im the third). i have all the paper work for the work done to it since it left the showroom... even the original window sticker! Truck was originaly from the east side of the country and was used as a work truck. I have paper work that includes a new head, head gasket, and a bunch of other random things done to it because they cracked the head. Also have paper work for a rebuild trans with what are part numbers i believe including a complete rebuild and new converter. Didnt find all this until after i purchased the truck. My lucky day i guess! Anyway my final goal for the truck is going to be a street legal race truck that runs 10's. It will still be a "Budget Beater" but with a higher budget!:rockwoot: |
You might as well drop the transmission pan and turn up the line pressure. If it doesn't have a shift kit installed yet, you can probably just about bottom out the pressure screw and still be fine.
You ought to rig up a tranny pressure gauge as well. It's kind of fun to drive around and get a feel for how the tranny's pressure fluctuates as it shift gears and as MPH increases. 10's sounds awesome! BTW, the day my Junker surpassed by daily driver in HP/Weight ratio and 1/4mile ET was actually a mixed feeling. You want to be proud of the project vehicle but then wonder why you wasted so much money on your daily driver that's now "the slow truck." |

Man, I can never find cool deals like this.

Its 4x4 and a stick but it is cheap... |
That truck has 424000 miles on it. Thats impressive really. I don't ever see them with that many.

This is on the driver's side of the transmission when you drop the pan. I'd go at least 4 full 360* turns counter-clockwise |
Thats the pics i was looking for, thanks Big Blue! I will give it a shot when i get home.

I'd like to run my truck in the 1/4 to see what it does before I put it under the knife again. I would imagine that having 422rwhp and only weighing #5600 should have me in the mid to low 13's if I can drive it right... EDIT: BTW, so far I've only got $500 in the engine :) |
