North American Turbo he351 review

Well I figured I would fire this review post up. As of right now it’s on the shelf awaiting able bodied support to get installed this weekend. But Gosh Darn it’s a beautiful thing. If it performs half as good as it looks I’ll be impressed. Zach was awesome to do business with, and answered all my questions. Turbo was packaged well and survived the cross country trip. I opted for the compressor housing powder coat just to make it look cool, but his pricing was outstanding. This is a 67mm he351 with a 7 blade wheel. Hoping to flog the hell out of this thing with little regards to drive pressure. It will be installed with a DPS 3rd gen t3 manifold as well. Figured it was time to upgrade the old grandpa Truck. I’ll update this as I drive it. In my opinion of all the companies I spoke with about a drop in 3rd gen turbo, NAT had the best knowledge and advice, on top of pricing!

Thanks for the kind words bud! Pleasure to do business with. Any questions concerns or anything at all don't hesitate to call!

The 67mm wheel is an H1E wheel and no this is the 64mm turbine. The 67mm turbine is too much in that housing. yes it will fit and yes they will work but when your wastegate flapper covers a portion of your wheel you are being a bit silly. We tend to push guys to an S300 or S400 frame past the 500hp mark. We will build them for whoever but we make it well known that there are better options past that. This was a special case where he needed his truck to look stock stock stock.

so its a 67/64/9?

ide be interested in how that lasts. a 66/65/14 ish kinda s300 tends to thrust itself to death prematurely imo. would be interested to see how this thing holds up and what kind of surge you get when you come off boost.

Yeah it isn't like we have sold a couple dozen of these or anything....

The trim of the small frame holset 67mm compressor isn't out of control. We have a 63mm inducer small frame holset compressor that would be more of a strain on it than this 67mm compressor. It isn't all about inducer size.

The lifespan of these is in the hands of their owners. Keep them at 40psi and they live a long happy life. They will live at 50psi but you better have your charge air system up to snuff. Most do not. Overspeed will murder them at and above 50psi.

So got the whistle pound maker installed today along with the DPS manifold. I tell you what the next manifold going on is a second gen style what a pain. Anyway the 67mm he351 installed well however the DPS manifold did not. The DPS manifold comes with the cheap gaskets, and sub oem hardware. Had to trim the turbo mounting studs to get it to work. I think they claim a 150* egt drop which I can believe since they moved the egt probe into the collector instead of up by number 5 and 6 like I normally do. Truck sounds way different though. Hit it hard on the street and could only make 24psi. I used North American Turbos wastegate plug but I’m thinking I’m going to hook the factory solenoid back up to see if it helps. With my 5” afe exhaust with a muffler it’s not horrible. Sounds very similar to a Fleece Cheetah. I enjoy the sound for now but the compressor side is very quiet which I like. Only thing I was surprised about was the lag. It spools almost 300rpm later but as of right now tuning hasn’t been adjusted. So far so good!
I attached some photos with measurements of the manifold differences.

If you use the wastegate plug one important thing to note is you have to leave the factory solenoid plugged in IIRC on those trucks without boost fooling. Not real hip on the tuning side of things but I do know that has been an issue on other trucks of that generation using S300s and the likes.

Reinstalled the wastegate solenoid with it plugged into the harness, allowing the tuning to manipulate it. Running great now made 41psi Of boost and melted the tires. Drive pressure was in control as well. Egts peaked 1250* and that was all. Towing 12k tomorrow will update on its towing capabilities.

Did some towing today I’d estimate, 18k gross, Truck handled well, towed in the Street tune no surging during shifts, and smooth at cruising speed. Sounds amazing in tow haul mode on engine braking. Truck feel more powerful and runs cooler once you hit the power band.

So I have had some time to do some driving now. I’m in love with this thing! May even compound it with a 480 or 482. Getting the tune dialed in has helped with the spool up and really getting her screaming at the big end. So far I’m up .8mpg city and 1.5mpg highway as well in this thing with a slipping Convertor.

10,000 miles on it now. Been beating the absolute chit out of it, towing, drag raced it, sprayed it, and it’s still tight. If you had doubts rest assured I’m thoroughly impressed!
