Hello to all! I recently pulled the trigger on a 99 international 4700 5 speed manual dump truck with the T444e motor. I didn’t do as much research as I should have. I put 9000lb of shell in the bed and it fell flat on its face, had to slip the clutch a little to get her to move. I guess my question is, how much can I tow with this truck? I know it’s a high rpm motor but would be nice for a little bottom end instead of giving her a push with the excavator bucket. I appreciate anybody willing to help . I can’t find any numbers on towing pounds, have a lot of hilly terrain in my area.

Thank you for the reply. Seems like all the tuners that are made for that truck just tap into the icp so I bought a variable resistor from 0-10k ohms. I hate to be messing with the wiring with these cheesy mods. I will check on ambulance injectors.

Petro not sure on what’s in it right now. I was going to run to the shop and see if the door sticker says anything or call IH tomorrow and see if they can tell me by the vin number

It is saying 3.73 gear ratio

Going to a 4:10 would help with your off idle torque and wouldn't sacrifice too much top end speed. Could go lower yet, but depends what you want to do with the truck or how much you really want to dump into it.

I wouldn't be afraid to gear it as low as you can and still maintain an acceptable top speed. Are you on the freeway often? What's you're top speed now? Are you gear-bound at that speed or is it just out of power there? I bet 4.88's would make it a whole different truck.

I’m fine with losing a little speed to gain a little more umph. I usually cruise around 50-55 anyway, a lot of hills and windy roads. The fastest I had her goin was 63 with the hammer down. How much speed would a guy lose going to the 4.10 or 4.88 gears? I plan to haul 5 ton of gravel most of the time. When not hauling gravel it will be towing an 8,000 pound excavator + trailer so right around 10,000 lbs. I appreciate all of you guys help in pointing me in the right direction

Old place I used to work had a 7.3 auto F450 with 4.88 gears, the truck was always gutless but it never seemed to be much slower even with 10k behind it. I'd say gear it and let it rev. See what your trans ratios are and find an online calculator then you can put in tire size and play with gear ratios to put your rpms where you want at whatever speed you'll be going.

Funny you say about the online calculator, I have played around with it but think I am entering the tire diameter wrong. Is it the diameter the tire says or the actual diameter from one side of the tread to the other side of the tread?

They are 19.5 but measure about 33”. I just talked to an international dealer and to reflash the computer to a higher horsepower is $900.

I can’t find anyone to reflash it except for a dealer so I’m thinking more fuel, more air and at minimum a 4” exhaust from turbo back with no muffler. I’m satisfied with the intake on this compared to most pickups. I still haven’t ruled out the different gear ratio yet, my buddy works for CAT so I’m sure he has all the special tools and gauges to get it set and shimmed correctly. I guess the ultimate question is the truck worth spending all this money to make it where I want it and what is the gcwr of this truck? I can’t find anything
