Compound turbo sizing

Me and a buddy have been trying to figure out what would be the best setup for him to run on his 07 5.9 truck to pick up some more power. Right now the truck has 63/68/14 over 89/96/1.32 with 85% over injectors and dual pumps. My question is what would be his best bet to change to pick up a noticeable amount of power while keeping a nice spool up. The 63 is an older cast wheel turbo not a sxe. Would it be as simple as throwing a t4 housing on the 63 or would you all suggest swapping the whole setup. We are planning on stepping fuel up to at least 150%. We would just like some suggestions on what setup people have ran that made good power (11-1200) and maintained spool up. Truck has all supporting mods (billet rods, 188/220 cam, valve train, etc).

I'm running a t4 s467.7/83/1.10 over a 485/96/1.32. It makes good power and spools very quick.

I guess I should have mentioned he tows on a regular basis around 20k lbs. Would a s400 secondary be able to do that with a manual trans.

I spool my setup in Sig with only 100hp R1 injectors to nearly 80psi running a 188/220 on the 6.7!

Stupid fast spool with the 64.5/73/ .91 T4 as the secondary.

Your setup is what I suggested for him except with around a 200% over I think it should cool good while towing and make good power.

I think you answered your own question op, t4 s300 sxe is hard to beat underneath another charger

That’s what I was thinking I just have no experience with s300’s or compounds really. I been running single s400s for so long.

The setup is my sig is exactly what you are describing. Safe at 1100hp. Go with the .91 housing on a 5.9 though. Could probably make 1400 but not as safe for everything.

Do you think your setup would tow pretty good on a 5.9. His main concern is making sure it tows well turned down, but have the ability to make around 1200 turned up. The truck tows a 32ft gooseneck with 20-22 round bales all hay season.

Definitely do the .91 for towing and yes it would do fine. Id guess OD off would make that more manageable?

It could do 1200 with no gate and .91 but better get it done at low RPM. With a gate would be no problem.

I’ll be honest a 369sxe secondary on a 5.9 is not a solid towing setup. If you tow 10% of the time sure, but it gets hot. I’d rather see a 64.5.

Ok thanks guys, and overdrive off isn’t a problem since it’s a manual truck. Clutches seem to be the major problem we are running into right now. He has had 4 triple disc now and needs another. 2 Valair and 2 southbend sintered iron lol. Valair told him they couldn’t build him a clutch to hold since he sled pulls about 6 times a year and tows and southbend says theirs will hold 1500 but he has been through 2 in 12000 miles.

It’s the original g56 surprisingly lol. It’s been at 1000hp for around 30k miles with around 50 hooks on it. He pulls in 5th low and it’s 4.10 geared, but it’s a ticking timebomb for sure.

Suggest 69 instead of 64.5 in regards to keeping the trans happy. :)

The clutch situation is tricky. My first ceramic triple lasted 3 years, 15k roughly with about 100 4wd launches on the strip and dirt drag. I'm being nicer too it now. I don't tow really and I still don't wanna try a sintered.

Valair also added some vanes to the flywheel to help bring cool air into the clutch. Looked like a nice improvement when I got the rebuild back. Did the valair he had have that yet? Thats in the last 2 years they added that. I haven't beat on the new one real bad yet but I definitely haven't had it lock up from heat like old one did.

It’s been a couple years since he had a valair and he emailed them and told him his power goals and what he does with the truck and they emailed him back that they don’t offer a clutch for his needs. I run a Kenny’s street puller triple and really like it but they put a power rating of 900 on it so I don’t feel comfortable telling him to try it.

I ran a s369sxe/s488. On a 180hp injector which is about 88%. Was not a fan of towing heavy with it at all got hot unless I towed turned all the way up. Dynoed 1013/1858.

Thanks for letting me know I think he is gonna try a s364.5 with .91 housing and see how it does.
