hand shaking with the 10s

So from all the horsepower calculators I have tried you need roughly 750-800HP to take 5500# into the 10s.

What would you need power wise to do the same in a 5 speed?

I was told by what I consider a very smart guy and well respected in the industry that it would take 12 - 1300HP. Does this seem right?

I don't see me keeping it together with that kinda power. Yes I understand that I am going to pretzel a few NVs on this journey regardless.

With suspension tuning and being able to drive the chit out of it what kinda power do you think a 5XXX# 5 speed needs to get into the 10s?

And please be constructive....I want the first nv in the 10s...are autos faster..yep..do I care...nope. I want to go 10.99 or faster in a 5 speed.

The lighter you are the less power you need and the less chit you'll break. Unless you have to be that heavy to remain in a certain class I'd spend a lot of time trimming weight.

There is a member on here who took his ZF6 duramax into the 11s or 10s. Can’t remember now.

All I remember is the awesome videos he posted of those power shifts. Dumped the clutch at the line and gave it hell. The lose wiring harness in the cab swung back with each shift.
Can a NV take the same abuse that ZF has been given?

I have thought about this myself a few times...Personally, my thought was always to cut weight as far as possible to try and get to where a single disc clutch would hold. They shift WAY faster than a dual disc.

Is it possible, I have no idea...would be fun to try.

How light do you think it can get without a back half?...I will gut this thing to where it damn near wont hold square body wise and not think twice.

He was in the low 11s...I have considered the ZF6....if I cant keep an NV together after a few tries I will swap it to a ZF

Don’t take this the wrong way, but what are you trying to achieve by getting a stick into the 10s?

I’m a manual guy myself, but it seems like the tough route to take. I would like to see it done for sure!
I know of a couple kids that have blown up a nv4500 trying to quick shift, and they maybe had 500hp, maybe.

You kinda answered your own question.

I wanna see it done.

It is also the tough route to take. I don't have the money to build the fastest automatic. To me 10s in a manual is like low 8 high 7 in an auto.(IMHO)

I feel I can get a manual there with the right set up and driving technique and do it on relatively safe power....safe for the motor...not the transmission:bang

Will make one thing clear tho, even if I had Lavon Millers 7 second monster in my garage right now, I would still be planning for this build.

It would be nice to have a sequential transmission like the rally cars for drag racing. IF one was built to handle diesel torque it would be a nice thing to have. Doubt that day will ever come

Doesn’t that triple disk make for some fast shifts and hold some power?

You going to do the thing where you cut every other tooth off of the synchro? I forget what everyone was calling it back in the day, slick or fast shift or something along those lines?

I endorse this dream and hope you make it!

Its called slick shifting...I believe I will go at it bone stock + upgraded input. As I break stuff I will start hodge podging different setups together.

Things on the list to try out on the path are:

-Cryotreating gears
-Slick Shifting the syncros
-Super tight clutch and slipping with my foot
-Loose clutch that just barley holds so it will slip but allow quick engagement
-2nd gear launch
-3rd gear launch
-4th gear launch

Not constructive. bif
My apologies, somehow I missed that paragraph where he pretty much explained why.

What about using a tall rear gear, wide powerband, and try to minimize shifting? Maybe start in second or third? Idk honestly I’m not a drag racer, I’m just throwing out ideas.
