Performance engine Oil.

Yea, 2 bottles of zddp on top of a race oil? Maybe look into running 20/50 if you only drive it in the summer months. I don't run anything special in my truck as it's not "built" with high spring pressures, but Brad Penn is used in the old man's race cars and my bike. I don't see a reason for you to switch, but most of the oils these guys listed I would be comfortable with.

Yeah I will probably switch to 20w50 and stick with Brad penn for now. Just wanted other opinions, and to see what other people were using.

Thanks everyone.

We run 5w50 schaeffers in our pulling tractors, they aren’t anything wild though.

One of our neighbors use to run a Ntpa light pro on the circuit and he said he could see a difference on his data logger when he switched to Schaefer’s. And a friend of mine builds garden tractor engines, he did some dyno runs comparing oils, and a 15hp engine picked up 1/4hp with Schaefer’s. He said he thought it was a fluke so he drained it and retried it with some other oils and it would consistently pick up 1/4hp with schaeffers in it. I wouldn’t have believe it coming from anyone else lol.

I’ve seen it work. Years ago, We had continual problems with certain gearbox’s, someone suggested trying Schaefer’s in it. So we did, not thinking it would actually work, and we never rebuilt that gearbox after that. And we ran Mobil 80w90 before and maintained it regularly.

Sounds like a sales pitch, but I’ve seen it work too many times to not believe it. We don’t run it in everything. Just applications that are problematic

Thanks mfsuper90. That is definitely awesome. Seeing or hearing about things like that is what drives people to use a product. Sales pitch or not it’s definitely something to take into consideration.

This blog was interesting to me, especially the zinc additives/content. Ignore the "Im an engineer all will bow to me" lol. I wish he would have tested more diesel oils but gives a guy some things to think about. Its a long read but good info.

Holy smokes that article is long! But I really like the info it provides, thanks for the link.

And that info is 100% BS , engine oils are not tested with that Falex machine. Oils doing well in that test usually fail in real tests.

I have an oil testing company not far from me. I want to get in contact with them and maybe start sending samples in.

This topic comes up almost every year. Correct me if I'm off track, but it hasn't burned me yet. Why would you spend any extra money on oil. I can see additives...(like zinc if flat tappet). Just change the oil out on a regular basis. In my opinion the biggest concern has always been fuel delusion. Changing often will protect against cylinder wash down. We dump cheap oil every 3 hooks and save money.

Use viscosity that suites your bearing clearances, thicker is not better, and use very narrow viscosity range like 10W30 or 15W40 or single grade, because they dont have VI improvers that fail under load. Do not use additives. Synthetic is good, 100% paraffinic base also.

Is this based on experience or?

I am thinking adding zinc is a worth while investment as there is less zinc in the newer CK-4 + oils for emissions compliant reasons.

If you dont have flat tappet lifters you dont need zinc. Too much zinc have shown more wear in some tests.

Do many engines not have flat tappets? I guess all the diesels I’ve been into have all been flat tappet. Except for a friend dt466 with roller lifters

Seems like those small Cummins engines have, others not. But usually oils meant for diesels have enough zinc. Or buy some oil that advertise high zinc content for dinosaur engines, additive is never good, it messes carefully tested balance of additive package by oil manufacturer.

Start with the best base stock oil (group IV PAO) and go from there.

Zinc is overrated. In fact many oils are going away from it for a reason.

I believe there are grades like 10w40 and even 5w40 without VI improvers. I agree VI improvers are useless. They do nothing for lubrication.

I went with 20w50 Penn grade 1. My local Napa ordered a couple extra cases of 50 and 40 weight last fall when I ordered my last case. Going to just add the 1 bottle I have left of the Lucas ZDDP additive I had left over. 1 Lucas bottle treats 4-5 quarts.

I'm going to try cenpeco straight 50wt. Gonna try it for 2-3 pulls and drop it see how it feels, and looks like.

Shaffer’s, Cenpco, Brad Penn, PDD seem to be tops so far. Definitely interested in the Hot shot secret oil and the new Amsoil performance Diesel oil. Anybody know Zinc content In any of the brands? I know Shaffer’s is 1400-1800ppm Zinc content, and Penn grade 1 advertises Zinc mass% @ 0.150? on there site. Couldn’t find much on Cenpco, or PDD.

2200 PPM ZDDP for both PDD conventional and synthetic 15w-40.
