Compounds build thread hoping for 600

So I went ahead and advanced the timing to 20*, installed the arp 2000s I had (took forever and a day stopping to mill each rocker pedestal as I went) , installed some 215s I’ve had laying around, and did 131/181 hybrid dvs. Power seems more linear now for sure and up a bit with less smoke. I need to adjust the pump though to help it out, I have yet to mess with the smokes screw and I believe it’s hurting me. I can’t get Tapatalk to download so I’m going to have to go through Google or something.

I’m still having a really hard time trying to decide which turbo to hang underneath. I was looking at the one underneath the hood of my feete i’m still having a really hard time trying to decide which turbo to hang underneath. I was looking at them one underneath the hood of my pete that I was going to replace with the S 475 And it is a GTA 4202.

If you are not stuck on the hx I would look for a he351. Had both and really like the 351 on the bottom end over the a hx35. My shortbed has a 351 over 3b and it makes a great towing setup.

The gt42 is a 1.15 ar so the good one I believe.

I’m mostly set on the hx35 because I have it already and I haven’t seen a good deal yet in the last few yrs I’ve had my eye on eBay for a he351. What are your mods and hp on that truck? I looked to see if I could see a build thread in your threads but you have a lot of threads haha

Back when I had a hx35 in compounds, I got ahold of a banks 14cm housing, drilled the divider for the wastegate, it was a big improvement over the 12cm and a none gated 16cm I think it was. Ran pretty strong

I rode in an early 5.9 CR years back. Had a HE351 with GT4294, and the GT had a tighter exhaust housing. Man was that a fun ride!

I sourced a GT4294 from a local member about 7 years ago. It's been on the shelf sense. One day I'll use it on my 12v VE with a 351 feeding it.

I like my HX35-14/HT3B-26 setup. I have DFI 5x.014's, stock 181 valves, stock 180hp pump, 17-18 static timing, stock lift pump, and I can tow just about anything as fast or as slow as I want. Was fun and "fast" with a 47RE, but sucked to tow heavy or high. Did a G56 swap and it got slower but tows like a dream. My thread on the setup is pretty somewhere in the Turbo tech area. Cheap, simple, reliable. Been running them for 7-8 years I'd say. Towed out west up to like 10,000ft, midwest, southeast, northeast.

Also, stock head gasket and bolts, not retorqued. Ran a BD intercooler after splitting some stockers when I was around 80psi. BD dropped that peak boost number. Steed speed manifold helped a little, but might have been more because of my 3 piece manifold leaks. All on 3.54 gears and 35" tires. It's impressed several guys with tuned newer trucks, runs pretty good for an old farm truck.

Thanks for the post! I have probably read through your thread a dozen times over the last couple of years, I was wondering what you ever came up with trying to cool that thing down.didnt you used to have jl machine sticks in that thing? I have been thinking about just putting nozzles on a extra set of injectors I have and popping them at 280. You find the 5x14s to be just right? I was looking into the 14 housings but for less money I could just do a 351 it looks like. Rebuilt ones are like 300 on eBay so if a housing is pretty worthwhile deal I’d probably just opt for the new turbo. I have 4.10s in mine and wish I had like 3.73 or 3.92s because I’m turning it pretty good down the highway. What did you end up setting your secondary gate at? I don’t remember ever seeing you post a final value.

I personally think you should go larger on injector if you are wanting to break 600RWHP.
I've recently converted my 97 to auto and started drag racing. I'm running a hybrid 35 (63/67) with a benched 215 pump, 25* timing, P&P head, PDR street cam, and 5x14 DFI's. According to my track time and ET calculators I'm mid 550hp range and I'm completely clear haze all the way down the track at 30-35psi.

I can't remember the old injectors but the new are DFI 5x.014. I can't remember if I had him put .010 lift on it or not. They work pretty good for my setup, not real dirty. I have 3.54 gears and I wouldn't want anymore than that. I never got down to getting it set to a number, life got busy and I just drive and tow the crap out of it. It's got some springs on it instead of a boost actuator. I could probably get it running perfect if I could pause time for a couple days.

Temps came down after the Steed speed and possibly fixing some existing exhaust leaks. I had a Steed and stainless manifold side by side and took lots of pictures. The stainless came first and I was so disappointed that I bought a Steed and sold the Stainless diesel.

I never installed the Hamilton cam, springs, or pushrods. Those are all here waiting for the same thing, time. I also have some delivery valves from Smokem laying around to try as well.

You preferred the stainless diesel manifold over the Steed Speed because of looks and flow? And the Steed Speed manifold dropped your exhaust temps over the Stainless Diesel?

Just trying to make sense of your post and which you found to have greater benefit.

Finally adding pics of the milling of the rocker pedestals. I still need to go back and recheck the torque on the studs after some heat cycles. What do you guys guess I would be at with the s475 under my hx35 with the 215 injectors? I just read for the first time that the nv4500 isn’t so great for holding up to higher hp. I never guessed it wouldn’t be up to the task, so I never researched it. Kind of annoyed really I guess, the clutch is good to 650hp and I have the fully splined main shaft, a new cluster and bearings, as well as a 5th gear nut splined locking device. I’m nervous to put a bunch of power through it now. Any of you guys running the nv4500? Or you guys all do the autos? Would I be asking for it to run like 500-550 through it? I’m not much into driving like a dipstick but I do like to feel the power.

Here’s the truck so you all can see. I painted it, built the bumper and bed myself. I’ll have to get the pictures off my old phone of what it looked like when I bought it. It was pretty sad.

So here are some side by sides of the bht3b and s475. Ht3b is a 26cm non divided exhaust and the s475 is divided and 1.32.

Back in the day I kept 3 nv4500s on had to keep one going.
My setup at that time:
62/65/14
5x12 SDX
Colt cams big stick
Benched 180 pump 410cc

Keep in mind I have a very heavy foot. Main thing I had problems with was keeping 5th together. Also I would run the 475 and open up the hx35. Best towing setup I’ve ran was a s300g over a 475

By open up do you mean drill the gate and divider? Or do you mean go 14 housing and the 62 comp mod?
That’s crazy, we’re you just hot dogging in 5th and stripping it or would it just always back off on you? Did you have the full splined shaft too or was it the actual teeth?

Mine was fully splined some fancy lock nut blah blah blah. Definitely don’t mess around in 5th. I would break 5th gear teeth and 3rd gear. After you buy a couple countershaft you quit side stepping 3rd lol. My last set of gears I got cryoed. Must of helped because a started breaking the 5th gear synchro hub on the CS. That wasn’t so bad because I wasn’t pulling the transmission to fix it but I will say I probably put 8 or so of those hubs in.

Hope your luck goes better than mine. I 5600 swapped it but also broke 2 of those. I just break things I guess
