New truck project

I got a new truck this weekend for 2800. It's a 94 4x4 auto truck. I bought it with "high blowby" and a bad turbo. Trans isn't shifting perfect but is moving around the lot. I need to tear in to it and see what can be done.

I will be using this as a build thread about getting a budget truck back together. Proper way to inframe an engine from honing the cylinders to rolling rods and mains. Ect

I will also show the proper way to swap pumps ect. I have a spare 215 under the work bench that I will be swapping in place of the 160 as I already have the 160 sold. Will only have 2200 in this rust free truck.

Here is me pulling it home ImageUploadedByTapatalk1418654432.933373.jpg
It sat in a field for 2 years. The interior needs gutted and cleaned as it smells like nasty barn.
After I spent and hour steaming it of, the paint came out great very little damage

Will do, Should be swapping turbos and pumps this week and pulling the head and getting the pistons out next week if all goes well. Does anyone know if the rear pistons will come out assembled?

Yes they will. I jacked up the motor by the ac bracket took pan and sump off. Then I took rod caps off. Set it back in cradle and knocked them out.

Well got the turbo off and found oil coming out of the rear ports of the manifold. So I am assembling a turbo out of 3 turbos. Should be a hx 40 hybrid. Then next week I will remove the head and find out what's wrong. Well I decided to find the miss I had. After a good set of injectors, I still had a miss on the rear 3 cylinders. Decided to yank the head and found a very rough set of cylinders. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1421026974.834537.jpg
I did manage to get lucky and the bores measured good and I had some meat left. I got the hone out and was able to cut the #1. All still measured good. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1421027065.340694.jpg I will have to pull all of the pistons and cut all bores. I dropped the pan and some mains and cut the filter. The filter was bad but have seen worse. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1421027482.718153.jpg. The mains were ok but it will be getting rods, mains, oil cooler, new rings and the bores cut. Head will also be getting swapped with my spare. The 160 pump was also exchanged for a 215 pump. Had to button it up and get it out of the shop till I get parts. Good weekend so far. The turbo is actually already together. It was simple and straight forward. Disassemble one new bearings and thrust. Clean it all up and swap desired turbine wheel to the hx40 center section. Not sure it how well it will run. I didn't build it because I wanted a hybrid, I build it because those were the only good parts I had to make a turbo lol

Ya I have a couple turbos laying around in my hoard pile as well. No machine work in this swap? Been reading that some guys are having clearance issues with the cover.

It's a 40 cover and wheel center section. the turbine and housing from the 35. No parts can really interfere. I hope it holds up only time will tell. It's temporary anyways

Should be a pretty interestin build. What are your plans for the truck? And it must be nice to find them that cheap haha. A rusted out first gen around here lists for at least $5k-7k.

Well I got this truck because it had a hurt engine and the interior smelled like a barn. But plans are to have it as a spare truck and run at the local truck as often as possible. I want to get in to a points series with it. Hope to run 12s this summer

That should be a pretty fun truck. I've always wanted a rclb. Almost traded my old toyota for one a couple years back but the guy backed out

I am curious why you decide to inframe it. By the time you have it stripped down to work on it, a few more bolts and it is out. Then it is so much easier to work on it.

More because of time reasons and it's not my shop that the trucks in. I am used to In frames and kinda want to see what I can do in chassis. With that being said, money is a huge part. I don't want a lot of money in This thing at the moment and I know if I pull the engine it will be hard to not upgrade more and more
Ect. It is hard to not yank the engine though. Could be out in 15 min though

Has anyone thrown rod bolts on rods without getting them machined. I am thinking about getting a set of first get pistons and arp rod bolts for the engine. Feel it would be a solid upgrade

I put a set of ARP's in my 12v when I had the pan pulled to install the Cummins block stiffener. Worked fine.
