My VW is sick

My VW has had a CMP implausible code since I put the cam in it in 2014. I think I dicked up the tone wheel.

Anyway, it has had a slow start, but has always started, since that happened. I had messed with it, reading threads on the code, I replaced the CMP, added a ground, ohmed the wired end to end. It was after I did the continuity check that I quit messing with it.

This morning, after two years of hard starts, I had a crank with no start. Before, I could crank 5 sec, stop, crank and it would fire immediately. I had assumed this was because the ECM switched sensors once the CMP was coding.
Now, I had about 60 seconds of crank time over a few minutes, and no start.

So what is most likely to be the failure? I'm not entirely sure how the speed timing strategy works on these baby engines. I should have a vag-com by the end of the day. Anything I can look at in particular?
