12v cummins towing modifications

I am new to the forms. I am looking for the best mods to do to my motor for towing and DD in stop and go traffic. I am doing a cummins swap into my 05 f350 and I don't know a whole lot about them my buddy is rebuilding the motor ground up right now and he is a all stock tip of guy. I am looking to make about 450hp outta this deal and keep the egt as low as I can. It's a 95 motor.

Right now motor has
Arp studs all way around and rod bolts
New bearings and oem cummins hg
Hamilton 178 206 camshaft and rappers
150 pound valve springs

I don't know what to run for injectors I was thinking 80hp or 60hp. The p-pump getting rebuilt I was going to put a rack plug, afc spring, timing at 16 degrees and #100 fuel plate but I think might be to much plate. I believe this pump has the 131cc dv's do I need to change them to 181cc? And what plate y'all think? Turbo wise I was going to run the stock one for a month until I could get a aftermarket one but I think I just going to get one anyhow people telling me to get htt turbo 62/65 14cfm housing. If got any ideas let me know plz. There a lot of good set ups on here and I would like to here what you think or would change on my thinking.

I'm sure someone will be along to b!tch about using the search function, but there's a overwhelming amount of info about this subject and around 75% of it is outdated.

The forum could also use some chatter about a simple subject such as this.

If it was me I would stick with the 131's and see if you need more.
Power Driven Diesel's AFC Live may be beneficial to you.
I would consider using a HE351 based charger, with some improvements.

HE351 comes factory on 04.5 to 07.5 Dodge Cummins engines. They are a reliable charger and cheap to come by. ~$300 price range for a good working unit. If you feel the charger is not handling the fuel well, you can open it up to a 62mm and move some more air.
I’ll see if I can find a link for you.

I ran a stock HE351 on my 24 valve at about 450-500hp and it was a great setup, I think it would do pretty well for what you're looking for. I'd talk to Infinite Performance or Haley Speed about injectors, don't get a cheap set of "80hp" injectors if you want it to run clean and cool. Pump setup sounds good, you'll be fine with either DV and a 100 plate. Learning how to tune the AFC and dialing it in to your liking will net the most benefit.

The one with the sensor is an HE351CW, that’s the one you’ll want. The one without is a HE341, not a bad turbo but a little smaller. Someone makes an HE351 specific downpipe, or you can get an HX40 downpipe and use an adapter flange, that’s what I did since I already had the downpipe.

Got a few questions
What are you looking at towing weight wise?
How often do you plan to tow?
What trans do you have, auto or stick?

Mine is a 04 F-450, 5.9 12v, 215 pump, ZF6 manual, I tow heavy, 26-32k gross, read my sig.

When describing inj go by the number of holes and their size, I'm running 5x.012's, hp numbers does not accurately describe a inj
10 plate is the best towing plate but gives up some hp, 100 plate is a performance plate for big hp but will cause high egt's towing.
I have AFC Live but haven't been able to get it tuned properly for my app, so not going to recommend for towing at is time.
I'll comment on other things after I know what you have and plan to do.

I am towing about 25k at most that with the truck weight. It has a zf6 Manuel with DD clutch. I don't tow that all the time just like 6 times a year. The injectors I was looki g at was fanboys diesel 60hp ones and turbo I was just looking at going with 62/65/12

The HE351 is a great towing turbo, but it is a PITA to install for almost no performance increase. I think you get spool up ~100rpms sooner, ~50hp more before drive pressure is insane, and almost the same durability as the HX35.

I'd recommend 7mm deliver valves with some Hamilton 4k gov springs.
5x14 high pop pressure injectors (7x12's are about the same fuel but burn cleaner, hard to find though).
A 62 or 63mm turbo is going to pair really well with a 100-200 higher stall torque converter.

That would make for a very peppy truck that keeps really low EGTs and not enough power to kill much.

I actually love how an s357 feels for daily driving, but it might not have the range for what you want. It chokes up top a lot.

I thinking the 62/65/12 turbo be to much idk. I just found htt turbo they have a hx40/35 hybrid turbo with 14cm exhaust housing. Would that be big enough with 60hp injectors

That 62/65 tows good on my buddy's truck. It even has marine injectors and keep them cool and spools well.

S357/BD Super B, S300G will handle about 375hp on a 12v without head work, maybe 400 since you have a cam. However, it will probably make the most torque of any charger you're asking about, which makes towing more fun and brings more smiles.

Here's how I used to set up a 12v for towing...weights up to 50K gross...

S357 or later I used a S358ET/68/12 (58mm Extended Tip wheel...not cheap, but worth it)
5x.014's with 181 or 022 DV's
I had a Helix 2 cam which was great then, don't know what is equal now, but you should be fine.
Valet switch....for when the old guys were driving it.
#100 Plate
3K GSK's

This was before AFC live, so you actually had to learn how to tune a pump and AFC.

This setup made ~280hp/700tq in Valet, and did 398hp/998tq set on the hot side, never got over 1350* in the manifold no matter how long you pulled a hill. Truck also had 380K when it did that. It was also about 10 years ago....Damn, how time flies.

First off this 60-80 hp inj thing doesn't mean crap
Hole count and orifice size is what you need to know
160 engine has 5x.009 inj, 215 engine has 5x.010 inj , so is that a 55 hp inj?
I know a guy that making 325 hp on stock 5x.010 inj in a 215 engine
I have 5x.012 inj's that will put my engine into the 400+ hp range

SXE62 turbo is a nice street performance turbo and tows well in a auto trans truck, but unless you want to keep the engine revving like a race motor it's a laggy dog in a manual trans truck with a heavy load behind it, S357 is a better choice but will push it to make 450 hp. For a fun 450 hp DD that you can tow heavy with and keep egt's a bay your looking at a set of small compound turbo's. Getting compounds turbo's in a Ford's engine bay is a job in it's self and makes routine maintenance a night mare.

Not sure what you've done to your fuel system but to make 450 hp from a 160 engine and keep the inj pump happy you need lines bigger than the stock 6.0 lines (tried that, stuck the plungers in the 160 pump).

As I said in my first post, I tow heavy on a regular basis on backroads and hills in Ky. Present engine is a fresh built 12v, 215 p pump, stock 181 dv's, 3k gsk, AFC Live, 5x.012 inj's, Colt Big Stick cam, Pac Brake 60# springs, BD stainless exhaust manifold, S300G 57mm turbo.
This is setting in a 04 F-450 4x4 chassis connected to a single disc kevlar/ceramic clutch, ZF6 trans, 3.73 gears on 32" tires. It's a work truck, not a hotrod.
Dialed down to the 350 hp ranging it pulls good and egt's are controllable, turned up it'll blast up a hill but egt's get hot pretty quick.

That hx40/35 hybrid is old school tech and was noted to have a weak shaft, if your going to drop the coins for a turbo go with one of the new SXE series.

So I ended up going with a 60/65/12 turbo with 360 bearing and billet wheel and he machining the 4 3/8 flange on it for me for my fummins conversion since DCS has a pipe already for them. It has the bigger shaft in it not the 7mm one. Adjustable waste gate preset at 45 pounds. And I got 5x12 injectors for it. I think it should spool pretty good and have enough up to.

There is nothing weak about an hx35. They are very hearty turbos. Work for millions of miles if ran sensibly. Idiots blow them up and give them a bad name running them over 50psi with 5x18’s wondering why they have egt issues.
