60mm HX35 upgrade?

Hello everyone,

I got a low milage HX35 with my P Pump stuff. Since then I added a 16CM exhast housing to it..

I am in to the turbo for $290 as is...

Thinking about upgrading to a 60mm compressor wheel and housing...

I have read that they are aprox $225??

That puts me at $515 and gives me a 60/??/16..

What size is the exhaust wheel on a HX35 anyhow?

Is this worth it? What kind of boost/HP can this turbo hold?

Cheers
Bob

the exhaust wheel is either a 57 or 58 exducer. you'll probly be good for 40psi max. any more than that and your risking the shaft breaking because of the drive pressures.

The 60mm compressor setup should be a nice upgrade as long as you dont plan to go too big. My HE351cw made a pretty big difference in EGT's, and its a 60mm compressor. The HX35 exhaust wheel is said to be 58mm, but I measured one I had and it was 60mm.

I am in the same boat you are except I have a stock turbo.

I was going to upgrade it to but after it was over and done with it would be taking a high risk breaking because of small shaft.

I now have a bigger turbo that will do more for less but I think I still need a bigger on so I can run 700 hp at the wheels.

If you keep the boost down and don't bark it. It will probably be ok.

Just high risk of breaking the shaft scares me to much to do it....

I dont think you will risk breaking the shaft by running a 60mm compressor wheel, unless you bark it every chance you get.

The HX35 shaft seems to be fine until you put it in an HX40 with a 65mm turbine. The turbine is too big and heavy and if you bark it hard very often it can eventually snap, but i havent heard any problems from people just upgrading the compressor.

The shaft will break if the turbo is frequently pushed past 40lb...not immediately but eventually. Barking a 35/40 hybrid can cause instant death...maybe not on the first or second bark but definitely before the 100th bark. The best hybrid setup that I've found is with a 14cm wastegated turbine hosing.

i got mine from gillett diesel, great customer service and good pricing. i usually get around 45 psi with the 60mm 6 blade upgrade and the 16cm exhaust housing.

Is it the same shaft on hx35 and hx40?

high tech turbo :)

I called them and they said they are out of stock and seemed like they were not too concerned about getting any in any time soon.

HTT also says there is some machining to do.
Why can't we just use factory Holset parts and not do any machining?
Are they differant setups?

Did you notice a difference in hp when you upgraded this? Was it worth it?

I was in the same boat as you. I already had an HX35 and a 16cm housing, but it needed a rebuild. I had a 58mm HX40 on my truck at the time.

I ended up selling the HX40 for about $375
I sold the HX35 for $100 with the stock housing, and sold the 16cm housing, but cant remember what i got for it.

Then I bought an HE351cw off craigslist for $275. Bought the piping and intercooler boots and clamps I needed all for about $60-70

So I have about $350 in a nice good spooling, and cooling turbo. The HX35 will be very similar performance, but it would have cost me about $150 more.

So, if you dont mind some fab work the HE351cw is the better option because its cheaper, and probably a little better. Plus you can run a true 4" exhaust.

That was just my view on it after some thinking about what i wanted to do.

This sounds interesting.....
Do you know what year it is you have? Also do you know the wheel sizes?
thanks

My turbo is off of an 05, but they are the same from 04.5 to 07 5.9 cummins trucks.

It is a 60/60/9 turbo. The exhaust housing is kind of small, but it is undivided, making it more like an 11cm housing, and the wastegate flows pretty well, so it doesent seem to be a problem at all for the most part.

I can tell you I had a 58mm HX40 on my truck before and this turbo spools and cools much better. I was kind of expecting the better spool up, but i didnt realize it would bring the EGT's down as much as it did. I can still get it hot, but its a lot better than it was.
