Fummins Transmission Redo 2.0 Options

Fummins
Truck has been Cummins converted since 2009. The trans has been disassembled on my table forever it seems like. Trying to decide which route to take and it is time to pull the trigger and get the thing back together.

I started ordering parts to rebuild and upgrade the 48RE. Now I have started thinking maybe I want something else. I have some parts here already such as the new constant pressure VB, Santjer solid input, etc. but maybe a switch to a BTS 4R100 or and Allison 1000 would be a better option. I’d like to hear some input as I’m not sure just yet on what might be the right option for me.

2007 F-350 CCSB 4wd
BD R850
Hamilton cam, springs, push rods
Flux 3.3
EFI Live
Goerend 48RE
Rest of the usual supporting stuff

The initial thought was to upgrade my existing 48RE with the 37 spline input, Sonnax extreme intermediate (or TCS managing?), big output, Goerend GT3 rebuild, TCS billet drum, Boundry pump gears, rollerize gear train, Anteater, etc, etc...

Trans was previously Goerend with billet input, output and stock intermediate. Figured this time around I’d put the best parts in it I could and get another 50k+ out of it with room to grow.

There are things I don’t like about a 48RE and now as I am set to order the remaining parts I described to get the thing back together I am wondering if another trans option isn’t a better choice. So here I am asking for some feedback on what I consider my three potential options:

1. Rebuild and max effort the 48RE/Anteater
2. BTS 4R100 and PCS 2800
3. Allison 1000 (who’s ?)

Truck used to be daily driver. It isn’t a dedicated drag truck or sled puller. But it make do some of both at some point. I do flog it and I do want to tow with it though nothing more than cars/trucks on a 20ft car hauler. Performance used to be main focus but now all I want is it basically to do everything. Not too much to expect or ask I know. Truck isn’t 1,000hp and though that was the goal originally now I am more interested in it being as usable and reliable as it can be. It may never get the turbo and fuel upgrades once planned to make the 1k power but I damn sure want to spec the trans to that level because who knows what happens once I get back into the diesel mood. Surely not wanting to under build the trans for obvious reasons as none of the 3 options are budget builds. Pay once and enjoy trouble free for as long as possible with room to grow is the thought. If I only ever make 700-800hp, or less, and I put a 1,000+hp built trans behind it I am good with that. Overkill is preferred. I’ve had the truck for a long time and it will be kept so the investment will be realized over a long period of time.

To me I feel like the 48RE option is stout as anything can be. But there are things not to like about this trans for sure. Maybe the stand alone would cure most of what I dislike?

4R100 w/ PCS seems best performance, simple and dead consistent and repeatable shifts. Shift fast when I tell it all day everyday.

Allison for the additional gears, towing and general driving around town. But is it too slow to shift and otherwise more of a pain in the ass?

I know there will be strong opinions on this so let’s hear it!

It sounds like most of your dislike for the 48 revolves around erratic shifting?

2nd gear starts (always needed adjustable voltage regulator), less than firm shifts, 3rd to 4th gear spread, 2nd gear lockup by switch not vie tune and in general just always seemed to dislike the whole deal compared to my 4R100 or 5R110W trucks. Goerend stuff is great and not knocking Dave or anything to do with his trans. I believe it’s the best it can be. But rather describing my opinion of the nature of the trans in general. Basically I’m a Ford guy and the Dodge part is what I don’t like.

You already have it and it's already built. Granted I don't know much about the 4r100 but the aftermarket support on the 47/8re is very established. I would probably just change build it if you get over 800hp. Especially if you can r&r the trans yourself let alone disassemble and reassemble it properly yourself and have the time to when needed.

Sounds like a lot of your complaints will be resolved with the control of anteater. I’d stick with what you have.

Do you have access to someone running an anteater? If not, I can try to get a video of mine shifting tomorrow.

Im going to assume you have Dave's towing vb, I have his constant pressure vb and it kicks like a mule on shifts. But this also has to do with your line pressure etc. I'd get with goerend and voice your opinion, otherwise my other advice would be an anteater pro. The tap shift is great in stop and go traffic when you want to hold a gear, as constant up/down shifts with a hard shifting trans can get annoying. The great thing about the anteater is it does exactly what you tell it. The 3-4 spread does really suck but there's nothing you can do about that.

VB was sent in, changed to constant pressure (180 psi idle/max according to build sheet), updated to latest and is currently sitting on my shelf.

What stall converter do you have. I was researching constant psi valve body's recently and a few said it's not recommended with lower or low stall converters. I was thinking maybe because if the low throttle shift harshness. Just curious.

I have running in my fummins build(s) a PCS 4r100, zf-6 and 5r controlled by HP tuner(2008 truck)

If you are running under I would say 400-450hp and keep the WOT runnings to a minium the 5r is a great transmission that will live behind a cummins.

Otherwise my next choose would be pcs 4r. I had this in my X and loved it. Use map base shifting and it worked flawlessly day in and day out.

It's a georends 17 fin left hand cut. it's not an option on there site you have to call to get it, it's a hair looser than his 15 fin stock stall that I had before

Mr 48re is controlled by a pcs tcu2000. Older now but I love it and you can make it do what you like. Plus if you do decide to run a different tranny then all you need is a harness to match
