I have been thinking about puttin a HX35 turbo off a Cummins on my 5020 for a while. I have heard concerns over the motor not being able to handle positive pressure air charge but i am not wanting to go crazy with it. I just want to give this old thing a little more power. Opionions?

Idk what the compression ratio on a 5020 is, but that maybe a concern. That being said Im sure back in the "glory days". Im sure people were putting turbos on and putting a lot of fuel to them.

Pistons carry different part numbers for 6531A and 6531T, so I am thinking you would be correct on the compression ratio thing.
That being said, you can source a turbo from a 6030 or 7520 tractor in the scrap yard, bolt it on and go like a madman. No guarantees on how long that tired 531 is going to take boost though...

The m&w chargers that I've seen are a lot smaller then a hx35 so the 35 should be fine on a 5020 may need to find a bigger exh housing for it though

My grandpa use to turbo his 5010's/20's back in the 70's. they held together and ran for a good long time if you didn't let them get hot, m&w kit I think. Real popular around here because of the high altitude (7000-7500)

I'd say go for it. Just watch the egt real close.

The issue with the 35.. is using one with a bigger exhaust housing... or maybe doing some of the mods to the wastegate... like others have said.. many of those were turboed back in the day.. the 5020's CR is 16.5 to 1... the 6030's were closer to 15.5-15.7 to 1...

I've been wanting to try a hx35 on a 466.. has to be better than that tiny T04 on it now..
