WH1C/ HE351 hybrid

im working on putting a he351 compressor wheel onto my WH1C . I bought the he351 cover too hoping that it would fit, but the V-band flange is much smaller than the HX backing plate. so can't do that. What I am going to try is to machine the backing plate a little bigger so the wheel fits in it. Also going to carve out the HX35 cover so the bigger wheel fits inside. It looks like the 351 wheel is longer than the HX35 wheel so im going to shave a little off the front and back side. pics to follow.

as you can see the V-band clamp section diameter is way different
 
meanwhile, it looks like you've got a WH1C and an HE351VGT compresor housing on your hands...

every HX35 I've seen and the HE351's on the 5.9's have snap-ring compressor cover retention
 
did the 95's have HX35's? I know the 94's had WH1C's

does your HE351 have the integral silencer ring section like his does? sure looks like a 6.7 comp housing to me.

the HE351VGT I've got here looks just like that. v-band compressor and all... the HE351cw that came off my '06 is a snap-ring
 
Forrest is right. The he351cw has a snap-ring and also casting for the wastegate to mount to.

H1C will have v band compressor mounting.
 
the new compressor housing and wheel came from an 08 ram with the 6.7l. the shaft diameter is the same, and my stock turbo definately says HX35 on the cover. from what I understand it will be the same as a 35/40 hybrid, but the blade technology is newer?
 
If your going to swap wheels I would take the HX35 Compressor housing to get machined to fit the 351 wheel. But what wrong with the 351? Why not mount that on?
 
I would put the he351ve on there with the vanes controlled with a wastegate actuator.

Don't even bother making a he351/hx35 hybrid. Thats taking 2 steps backwards if you already have an 08 6.7 turbo to play with.

Lets clean up this thread a little. I agree that you have a He351ve off a 6.7 aka VGT turbo. Your "HX35" looks like any other H1C that I have seen, where did you find HX35 marked on the turbo?

My 99' HX35 had a snap ring not a v-band for the compressor cover.

My 2005 He351cw had a snap ring not a v-band compressor cover.


To those saying why doesn't he use the 6.7's HE351ve in it's stock configuration, the exhaust housing inlet is a unique size and will not bolt up. The only person I have seen with this turbo welded a plate to a stock manifold so new bolt holes could be drilled and tapped etc. The flange is a hybrid in size between a T-3, T-4, and T-6 but it's close enough to the stock T-3 size that bolts interfere and conflict in such a way that a one piece adapter flange is not feasible. The compressor outlet is different than stock location so it would require new cold piping. The exhaust outlet is different and so the stock 6.7 cast elbow and portion of downpipe would have to be rigged up. And last but not least, he would have to rig up a way to control the variable geometry or fix it at a certain size that ultimately is a compromise between spool-up and top end flow.

The easiest way to make this project work is to buy a HX40 compressor housing from HTT or Gillette Diesel. Since the "HX35" turbo in this project appears to be a H1C, buy a "hybrid compressor cover" that has a v-band flange sized to fit the H1C compressor backing plate.

I suspect a real HX35 and HE351cw=04.5-07 5.9's could be made into a hybrid with simple maching to the HX 35 backing plate to accept the larger diameter exducer on the HE compressor wheel and then a suitable retrofit charge air cold pipe would be required.
 
main reason I am not using the whole turbo is because all I have is the compressor wheel and housing. I don't have the whole thing. also all that other stuff Bigblue said too.

I plan on trying to machine it to fit and I will try to take note of how much material was removed from each part too.

And I just went out and checked, it actually is a WH1C. haha all this time I thought I had an HX35!
 
I know you're on the other side of the world, but you could get an HE351 off of a 5.9 and a downpipe flange for under $400 and have them headed your way on a slow boat :eek:
 
actually shipping with priority mail is the best way. it only takes about a week to get here usually.

forget about UPS. I checked on the price to ship two 3/4 inch heim joints and just the shipping cost was over $100.
